Hero Future Energies and Sumitomo Corporation have announced a planned hybrid renewable-energy project in Bidar district, Karnataka: approximately 500 MWp of combined solar and wind generation paired with a 200 MWh battery. Sumitomo is to acquire 49% of the project company, Clean Solar Power (Baniyana) Pvt. Ltd.; Hero Solar Energy Pvt. Ltd., a wholly owned Hero Future Energies subsidiary, will hold the remaining 51%.
What is the Hero Future Energies–Sumitomo project?
It is a utility-scale solar-and-wind project with co-located battery storage, developed by Hero Future Energies (HFE), the renewable-energy arm of India’s Hero Group. The project company is Clean Solar Power (Baniyana) Pvt. Ltd. Sumitomo’s planned investment is for a 49% interest in that company, while HFE subsidiary Hero Solar Energy Pvt. Ltd. will own 51%, according to Sumitomo Corporation’s announcement published on 5 October 2026.
Where will it be built, and what are its announced capacities?
The project is in Bidar district, Karnataka, India. Sumitomo’s announcement gives approximately 500 MWp of combined solar and wind generation capacity and 200 MWh of battery energy storage.
- 500 MWp is the announced peak generation capacity across the solar and wind components; the company has not disclosed their individual capacity split.
- 200 MWh is the battery’s stated energy-storage capacity, not its power rating in MW. The announcement does not specify the battery’s MW rating or chemistry.
The company announcement does not state the project cost, construction milestones, or equipment and engineering, procurement and construction suppliers.

How will the project sell its electricity?
Power is planned to be sold primarily to SJVN Limited under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA). Any surplus may be sold on the power exchange market. The deal consideration for Sumitomo’s stake was not disclosed in the company announcement; The Economic Times also reported that the amount was undisclosed.
Why combine solar, wind and battery storage?
The project’s stated design rationale is to combine solar and wind generation profiles—which vary with weather and time of day—with storage, helping smooth those fluctuations and support a more stable supply. Sumitomo says the PPA calls for stable electricity, particularly during morning and evening demand peaks.

Those are design and contract objectives, not reported operating results. The announcement provides no measured availability, delivered-power data, annual generation estimate or other evidence of the project’s performance in operation.
When is the project expected to start operating?
The announced scheduled commercial operation date is March 2027. This is a planned target stated in the 5 October 2026 announcement, not confirmation that construction is complete or that the project has been commissioned.

The announcement and specialist trade coverage leave several project details unspecified. pv magazine India reports on the transaction, but the available project information does not establish:
- the separate solar and wind generation capacities;
- the battery’s power rating in MW or its chemistry;
- the project cost or construction milestone dates;
- named equipment or EPC suppliers; or
- project-specific emissions reductions, employment figures or operating performance.
Those details should not be inferred from the headline capacity or the stated supply objectives.
