Retro form, current equipment
Kawasaki’s proposition is to preserve the visual language of a 1970s superbike while adding contemporary hardware and software. The company’s UK model description calls the bike an evolution of the Z1 idea with analogue dials, a comfort-oriented low seat and a “sound-tuned” megaphone-style silencer. Those are Kawasaki’s design and marketing descriptions, not independent conclusions about appearance or sound.

A 948cc inline-four separates the Z900RS Café from many modern retro alternatives that use twin- or triple-cylinder engines. Kawasaki rates it at 115.0 hp and 73.0 lb-ft, paired with a six-speed gearbox. The layout is the key part of the bike’s appeal for riders who want a classic Japanese four-cylinder identity rather than a particular cylinder count chosen for packaging or fashion.

Kawasaki UK says the engine is tuned for smooth performance at low rpm and more excitement at higher revs. Treat that as the manufacturer’s stated character, not a substitute for a back-to-back road test. Buyers who care about throttle response, vibration, heat, gearing or sound should arrange a ride on the actual motorcycle.

You want a complete retro design, not just round headlights

You want a substantial road bike rather than a lightweight beginner machine
A 480.7-pound curb weight and 32.3-inch seat height matter in parking lots, slow manoeuvres and shorter inseams. The numbers do not predict whether you will find the bike comfortable, so seat reach and low-speed balance should be checked in person.
How it compares with the obvious alternatives
The Yamaha XSR900 and Triumph Speed Twin are sensible comparison points, but the available independent comparison describes a back-to-back ride involving the Z900RS, XSR900 and Triumph Street Twin—not a definitive 2026 Z900RS Café-versus-all-rivals test. The $13,299 figure applies to the 2026 U.S. Café ABS base MSRP. It is not a worldwide price and does not include transaction costs. Kawasaki UK’s 2026 model-family page lists a £11,499 starting price for the standard Z900RS in the UK; that is a different trim and market, so it must not be treated as the UK Café price. Availability, colors, equipment and pricing can change by model year and country.
