Here’s What’s Covered Under the Chevrolet Powertrain Warranty

Chevrolet’s powertrain warranty usually covers the engine, transmission or transaxle, transfer case, and drive systems for 5 years or 60,000 miles—but not every nearby sensor, hose, module, bearing, or cooling component. Here’s how coverage, exclusions, diesel and EV exceptions, claims, and Protection Plans work.

For most U.S. Chevrolet vehicles, the powertrain limited warranty covers defects in the engine, transmission or transaxle, transfer case when equipped, and drive systems for 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. The important limitation is that powertrain coverage follows listed assemblies and qualifying defects—not every component located in the engine bay or attached to the drivetrain.

For most U.S. Chevrolet vehicles, the powertrain limited warranty covers defects in materials or workmanship in the engine, transmission or transaxle, transfer case when equipped, and drive systems. The usual term is 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. That does not mean Chevrolet will pay for every component under the hood, every sensor near the transmission, or every repair described as “drivetrain” work.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The exact coverage depends on the vehicle’s model year, engine, propulsion system, in-service date, mileage, and sometimes its fleet or commercial status. Use this article as a practical guide, but check the Chevrolet Limited Warranty and Owner Assistance Information booklet for the specific vehicle before relying on a coverage decision.

  • Engine: Major internal engine parts and specified attached components.
  • Transmission or transaxle: The main transmission assembly and specified internal or directly connected parts.
  • Transfer case: If the Chevrolet is equipped with one, such as many four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations.
  • Drive systems: The final drive, axle assemblies, driveshafts, and related specified components.

Coverage is for correcting a defect in materials or workmanship. It is not a maintenance plan, wear-item policy, accident-damage policy, or guarantee that every part connected to a covered assembly is included. Chevrolet treats powertrain coverage separately from its broader new-vehicle or “bumper-to-bumper” limited warranty.

Engine parts Chevrolet usually covers

The engine section generally covers the engine’s major structural and internally lubricated parts. Depending on the vehicle and the applicable warranty manual, representative covered components can include:

  • Cylinder block and cylinder heads
  • Internally lubricated engine parts
  • Timing gears, timing chain or belt, and timing cover
  • Valve covers
  • Oil-pump assembly and oil pan
  • Seals, gaskets, and specified engine manifolds
  • Flywheel
  • Water pump and engine mounts
  • Turbocharger or supercharger, where equipped
  • Specified actuators and electrical components internal to the engine
  • The covered portion of the engine-cooling system for applicable gasoline engines

This list is representative, not a promise that every part attached to the engine qualifies. The failed component and the cause of failure matter. For example, a turbocharger may fall within the covered engine group, while a nearby wiring harness, sensor, control module, hose, or radiator may be excluded or governed by another warranty section.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Important distinction: “Near the engine” is not the same as “covered under the powertrain warranty.” Ask the dealer to identify the failed part and the specific warranty provision that applies.

Transmission and transaxle coverage

The powertrain warranty generally covers the transmission or transaxle case and its internally lubricated parts. It can also include:

  • Torque converter
  • Transmission or transaxle mounts
  • Seals and gaskets
  • Specified electrical components internal to the transmission or transaxle
  • Certain actuators directly connected to the assembly

A transmission-related failure does not automatically make every associated electrical or cooling component a powertrain claim. The warranty materials identify exclusions that may include sensors, wiring, connectors, control modules, module programming, radiators, coolant hoses, coolant, and cooling lines. Applicable provisions may also exclude clutch and pressure-plate components.

That distinction is especially important when a vehicle has a transmission warning light. The warning may be triggered by an internal transmission defect, but it may also result from a sensor, connector, wiring problem, software issue, low or contaminated fluid, overheating, or another condition that has different coverage rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Transfer-case coverage

If the Chevrolet has a transfer case, the powertrain warranty generally covers the transfer-case housing, internally lubricated parts, mounts, seals, and gaskets. It may also cover specified internal electrical components and certain actuators directly connected to the transfer case, including an encoder motor where applicable.

Transfer-case cooling components, wiring, connectors, sensors, control modules, and other adjacent parts may be excluded under the applicable manual. Four-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive operation alone does not turn every component in the system into a covered powertrain part.

Drive-system and axle coverage

Drive-system coverage generally addresses the components that transmit engine or motor torque to the wheels. Depending on the configuration and warranty language, it can include:

  • Final-drive housings
  • Axle shafts and bearings
  • Constant-velocity joints
  • Propeller shafts and universal joints
  • Internally lubricated drive-system parts
  • Mounts and supports
  • Seals and gaskets
  • Specified internal electrical components
  • Certain actuators directly connected to the drive axle

Some wheel bearings, hub bearings, locking hubs, drive-system cooling components, sensors, wiring, connectors, and modules may be excluded. A failed wheel bearing, for example, can feel like a drivetrain problem while being treated differently under the warranty. Diagnosis of the actual failed component is therefore more useful than describing a noise as an “axle issue.”

What the Chevrolet powertrain warranty commonly does not cover

Powertrain warranty exclusions fall into two broad categories: parts that are outside the listed covered assemblies and damage or conditions that void or limit warranty responsibility.

Adjacent parts that may be excluded

The warranty manual may exclude or separately classify items such as:

  • Sensors
  • Wiring and connectors
  • Control modules and module programming
  • Radiators
  • Coolant, coolant hoses, and cooling lines
  • Some fuel-system components
  • Wheel and hub bearings
  • Locking hubs
  • Drive-system cooling components
  • Some transmission or transfer-case cooling parts
  • Clutch and pressure-plate components under applicable provisions

These exclusions do not mean that the part can never be covered under any Chevrolet warranty. A component could be covered by another applicable limited warranty, a recall, or a special policy. They do mean that its location beside a covered engine, transmission, or axle is not enough to establish powertrain coverage.

Maintenance, wear, and damage-related exclusions

The powertrain warranty is not intended to pay for routine maintenance or normal wear. Coverage can also be limited when a failure or damage results from:

Special coverage: diesel, fleet, commercial, and government vehicles

Do not assume that every Chevrolet receives the same 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain term.

The 2026 Chevrolet warranty materials identify a longer 5-year/100,000-mile powertrain term, whichever comes first, for certain Silverado TurboMax engines, certain 3.0L and 6.0L Duramax turbo-diesel engines, and certain commercial, government, and qualifying fleet vehicles.

Those are specific exceptions, not a blanket 100,000-mile warranty for every Silverado, every diesel Chevrolet, or every vehicle used for business. The engine, vehicle configuration, purchaser or owner category, and applicable model-year language must match the exception. Verify the vehicle’s warranty booklet and VIN-specific status before assuming the longer term applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

EV and hybrid powertrain coverage is different

Electric and hybrid Chevrolets may have separate propulsion-system warranty provisions. Certain high-voltage propulsion batteries and other applicable electric propulsion components receive coverage for 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Hybrid propulsion-battery coverage is also stated separately in Chevrolet warranty materials.

That should not be simplified to “everything on an EV has an eight-year warranty.” The applicable manual determines which propulsion components qualify. Battery-capacity loss can also be treated differently from a defect: gradual loss of usable capacity may not be handled the same way as a failed battery component.

Other EV systems—such as charging equipment, thermal-management parts, electronics, wiring, and control modules—must be evaluated under the specific warranty provisions for that vehicle. The same caution applies to hybrids: an electric propulsion battery provision does not automatically cover every hybrid component.

What Chevrolet pays when a powertrain claim is approved

When Chevrolet determines that a defect is covered, the factory warranty generally provides the required parts and labor for the warranty repair. Chevrolet’s new-vehicle warranty information also identifies towing to the nearest authorized dealership in the applicable warranty context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not confuse those benefits with automatic reimbursement for any repair performed anywhere. A dealer may determine that the failure is caused by an exclusion, and a repair performed by an independent shop may not qualify for reimbursement. Ask about towing, diagnosis charges, alternate transportation, and any other assistance under the vehicle’s specific warranty terms before authorizing major work.

How to make a Chevrolet powertrain warranty claim

Chevrolet says warranty work generally needs to be completed by a GM dealer, and the vehicle must first be diagnosed by a GM dealer before coverage can be determined. A diagnosis fee may be reimbursed if the repair is found to be covered; if the problem is not covered, the fee may not be refundable.

  1. Record the vehicle details. Have the VIN, current odometer reading, delivery or in-service date, engine type, and drivetrain configuration available.
  2. Describe the symptom accurately. Note when the noise, warning light, vibration, leak, shifting problem, or loss of power occurs. Avoid insisting that a particular part has failed unless it has been diagnosed.
  3. Locate the exact warranty booklet. Use the model-year Chevrolet Limited Warranty and Owner Assistance Information manual for the vehicle, not a generic warranty summary.
  4. Contact a GM dealer before authorizing major repairs. Explain that you want the concern evaluated for possible factory warranty coverage.
  5. Ask for the diagnosed failed component. Request an explanation of whether the component is listed under powertrain coverage and whether the dealer believes an exclusion caused the failure.
  6. Bring maintenance documentation. Include oil-change records, fluid-service records, receipts, and relevant repair history.
  7. Ask about fees and assistance. Confirm whether diagnosis, towing, courtesy transportation, or another benefit applies before approving work.

Optional tool: read codes before the dealer visit

An OBD2 scanner for car diagnostics can read stored diagnostic trouble codes and help you document what the vehicle is reporting. It is optional and should not be used to decide whether Chevrolet must approve a claim.

A code identifies a system or condition—not necessarily the failed part or the cause. Chevrolet’s process requires GM-dealer diagnosis before warranty coverage is determined. Do not clear the codes or replace parts solely because a scanner suggests a possible cause if a warranty claim may be involved.

Are Chevrolet powertrain warranties transferable?

Active Chevrolet warranties are generally transferable to a subsequent owner. “Generally” matters: Chevrolet identifies special transfer restrictions for the 2023 Corvette Z06 and directs owners to the warranty manual for the details.

If you are buying a used Chevrolet, verify the VIN-specific warranty status with Chevrolet or a GM dealer. Confirm the original in-service date, remaining time and mileage, applicable engine or fleet exception, open recalls, and any model-specific transfer restriction. A seller’s statement that the vehicle is “still under warranty” is not a substitute for VIN verification.

Factory powertrain warranty versus Chevrolet Protection Plan

A Chevrolet Protection Plan is a separate vehicle service contract—not an extension of the factory limited warranty by default. Chevrolet describes separate Powertrain, Silver, Platinum, and EV plan options, with coverage that can extend to as many as 1,500 parts depending on the selected agreement.

Terms, deductibles, covered parts, exclusions, eligibility, and pricing are controlled by the specific contract and participating dealer. Chevrolet says a plan may be purchased after the vehicle sale if the vehicle remains within the manufacturer’s limited-warranty period by at least 1,000 miles or 30 days before expiration, whichever comes first. That does not mean every vehicle qualifies, and buying a plan does not make a pre-existing failure covered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the factory warranty has expired or is close to expiring, compare the contract’s actual covered parts and exclusions with the vehicle’s age, mileage, repair history, and likely risks. A “powertrain” service contract can still define powertrain parts more narrowly than a consumer expects.

Maintenance and roadside benefits are separate

Maintenance and roadside assistance should not be confused with the powertrain component warranty.

For gasoline and diesel vehicles, that visit includes an oil and oil-filter change, multipoint inspection, and four-tire rotation. Diesel vehicles may also receive a specified diesel-exhaust-fluid top-off. EVs receive a first maintenance visit with a four-tire rotation and multipoint inspection under the stated terms.

Chevrolet also describes 24-hour roadside assistance and courtesy transportation for 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first, with separate or longer provisions for EVs. Listed roadside services include emergency towing to the nearest Chevrolet dealer, flat-tire assistance, battery jump-start, vehicle unlock, and emergency fuel delivery. These services do not expand the list of parts covered by the powertrain warranty.

What to check before relying on the warranty

  • Is the vehicle within the applicable time and mileage limit?
  • What is the vehicle’s original in-service or delivery date?
  • Does the engine, diesel configuration, fleet status, or propulsion system qualify for a special term?
  • What exact component failed?
  • Is that component listed under the applicable powertrain section?
  • Could maintenance, contamination, overheating, an accident, modification, or aftermarket equipment have caused the failure?
  • Has a GM dealer diagnosed the vehicle before major repairs were authorized?
  • Are you relying on the correct model-year warranty manual?
  • If the vehicle is used, has its VIN-specific warranty and transfer status been verified?

Bottom line: Chevrolet’s powertrain warranty usually covers the major assemblies that create and transmit propulsion—engine, transmission/transaxle, transfer case, and drive systems—for 5 years/60,000 miles, whichever comes first. It does not automatically cover every sensor, hose, radiator, wire, module, bearing, cooling part, maintenance item, or failure cause connected to those assemblies. The exact model-year manual and a GM-dealer diagnosis control.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the Chevrolet powertrain warranty?

For most U.S. Chevrolet vehicles, the powertrain limited warranty lasts 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. Certain Silverado TurboMax models, qualifying Duramax diesel engines, commercial or government vehicles, and qualifying fleet vehicles may receive 5 years or 100,000 miles. The exact model-year warranty manual controls.

What parts are covered by a Chevrolet powertrain warranty?

The warranty generally covers defects in the engine, transmission or transaxle, transfer case when equipped, and drive systems. It does not automatically cover every sensor, wire, connector, radiator, hose, control module, wheel bearing, cooling component, or other part located near those assemblies.

Can I use an OBD2 code to prove my Chevrolet repair is covered?

Not necessarily. Chevrolet’s warranty process generally requires diagnosis by a GM dealer before coverage is determined. A diagnostic code can help document a problem, but it does not prove which part failed or establish that the repair is warrantable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a Chevrolet Protection Plan the same as the factory warranty?

A Chevrolet Protection Plan is a separate vehicle service contract, not the factory limited warranty. Its covered parts, eligibility, deductibles, exclusions, pricing, and term depend on the selected agreement and participating dealer.

Does the Chevrolet powertrain warranty transfer to a second owner?

Active Chevrolet warranties are generally transferable, but exceptions can apply, including special restrictions identified for the 2023 Corvette Z06. Used-vehicle buyers should verify the VIN-specific warranty status, in-service date, remaining mileage and time, and any transfer restrictions.

The Bottom Line

Major propulsion assemblies are generally covered; adjacent systems and excluded causes may not be. Start with the standard 5-year/60,000-mile term, then verify the exact model-year manual, special diesel or fleet exception, EV or hybrid provision, failed component, and VIN-specific warranty status before authorizing repairs.
