Some car badges point to a place or a constellation; others preserve the names of companies that joined forces. A few are better understood as a record of how a logo changed—not as a puzzle with a hidden meaning. BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Toyota, Subaru and Ford each tell a different story.
What does the BMW logo mean?
BMW’s blue and white refer to Bavaria, the region where the company is based. BMW says its products have carried the logo in Bavaria’s colours since 1917. The familiar propeller reading came later: the company says the logo was depicted as a stylised rotating propeller in advertising materials in the late 1920s.
That distinction matters. The colours have a documented regional reference; the propeller image is a later advertising interpretation, not the explanation BMW gives for the logo’s original design. BMW Group’s company history describes both.
What do the Mercedes-Benz star and wreath represent?
The three-pointed star and the laurel wreath began as separate marks belonging to Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft and Benz & Cie. The star represents the Daimler side of the history; the wreath belongs to Benz. Their combined badge reflects the two companies’ shared identity.

The dates mark different events: Mercedes-Benz says the companies registered their shared logo on 18 February 1925, and their merger became effective on 28 June 1926. So the combined mark predates the effective merger. Mercedes-Benz Group’s history traces the star, wreath and chronology.
What do Audi’s four rings stand for?
The rings represent Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer, the four companies that formed Auto Union. They are a corporate-history symbol—not four letters or four features of a car. The badge compresses the four-company alliance into one emblem. Audi’s history explains the connection.

What do Toyota’s three ovals mean?
Toyota’s official account is strongest on the emblem’s evolution. The vehicle logo developed from the original Toyoda mark introduced in 1936 to the three-oval emblem, which debuted on the Celsior in October 1989 before spreading to other models. The source establishes that timeline; it does not require assigning a separate hidden meaning to each oval. Toyota’s emblem history shows the progression.
What does Subaru’s six-star logo mean?
“Subaru” is Japanese for the Pleiades, a star cluster in Taurus also known as the six-star group. The emblem joins that celestial reference to the company’s formation history: Subaru’s 2023 anniversary account says the name was adopted to symbolize the merger and unity of six companies.

The formation happened in stages. Five companies contributed capital to form Fuji Heavy Industries, with a later merger bringing the history to six. The stars therefore connect the name and the company’s unity, but the sequence should not be reduced to six firms all contributing capital at the initial founding. Subaru’s corporate vision page gives the core explanation.

Ford’s oval is best read as an identification badge, rather than as a symbol with a documented hidden message. Ford Lebanon’s regional history account describes earlier logo phases—including script and a short-lived winged triangle—and says the blue-and-silver oval has served as an identification badge on Ford vehicles since 1976. That source supports the logo’s evolution and use date, not a deeper symbolism for the oval itself. Ford Lebanon’s history page recounts the changes.
