At the older, commonly quoted price of $36 per kilogram, the same calculation comes to $201.60.
Those figures are estimates, not a universal refill price. Hydrogen stations set their own prices, and the Mirai may accept less than 5.6 kg depending on the fuel remaining, tank temperature, station pressure, and fill process.

How the Mirai refill cost is calculated
The basic calculation is straightforward:
Hydrogen price per kilogram × kilograms dispensed = refill cost
The second-generation Mirai stores approximately 5.6 kg of hydrogen in three high-pressure tanks. That gives the following estimated costs:

| Hydrogen price | Nominal fill | Estimated cost |
|---|---|---|
| $25.99/kg | 5.6 kg | $145.54 |
| $36/kg | 5.6 kg | $201.60 |
The $201.60 number comes from an older California price of $36 per kilogram. It is useful as an example, but it should not be treated as the current price at every California station—or anywhere else.
What a Mirai refill costs at a current example price
The Hydrogen Fuel Cell Partnership lists the Studio City, California, station at $25.99 per kilogram. Multiplying that price by the Mirai’s nominal 5.6-kg capacity produces an estimated full-tank cost of $145.54.
In practice, the amount charged can differ. A Mirai with fuel remaining might take only 3 or 4 kg, while a nearly empty tank could approach its nominal capacity. The dispenser calculates the charge from the amount actually delivered, rather than automatically charging for 5.6 kg.
Hydrogen is stored at approximately 70 MPa, or 10,000 psi, in the Mirai’s carbon-fiber-reinforced tanks. Temperature and pressure during the fill affect how much hydrogen the vehicle can accept, so even two refills made with the same fuel gauge reading may not be identical.
Estimated cost per mile
Toyota lists the 2026 Mirai with an EPA-estimated range of 402 miles. Using that figure and assuming a complete 5.6-kg refill gives these rough operating-cost estimates:

| Hydrogen price | Estimated full refill | Cost per EPA-rated mile |
|---|---|---|
| $25.99/kg | $145.54 | About 36 cents |
| $36/kg | $201.60 | About 50 cents |
These are simple comparisons, not guaranteed real-world costs. Driving speed, temperature, terrain, traffic, tire condition, climate-control use, and the actual amount dispensed all affect range and cost per mile. Toyota’s 2026 fuel-economy estimates are 76 city and 71 highway MPGe, but the EPA range remains an estimate rather than a promise of 402 miles between every pair of fills.
New Mirai buyers may receive complimentary hydrogen
The out-of-pocket refill price can be substantially different for a new Mirai owner who qualifies for Toyota’s complimentary-fuel benefit. Toyota currently lists the benefit through a fuel card as:
| Transaction | Fuel benefit |
|---|---|
| Purchase | Up to $15,000 or six years, whichever comes first |
| Lease | Up to $15,000 or three years, whichever comes first |
The offer has conditions. Toyota’s 2026 brochure says the complimentary-fuel period starts at fuel-card activation or 90 days after the purchase or lease commencement date, whichever occurs first. The card is nontransferable. The brochure offer applied to customers purchasing or leasing by March 31, 2026, so buyers should check the current terms and eligibility rather than assume the benefit is available indefinitely.
For perspective, $15,000 would cover approximately:
- 416.7 kg of hydrogen at $36/kg, or roughly 74 nominal 5.6-kg fills.
- 577 kg at $25.99/kg, or roughly 103 nominal fills.
The actual number of refueling sessions will depend on the amount dispensed and the station’s price when the fuel card is used.

How long does it take to refill a Mirai?
Toyota says a Mirai refill takes about five minutes when the station is operating normally. The procedure is similar to using a gasoline pump: the driver connects the hydrogen nozzle, starts the fueling process, and waits for the station to complete the fill.

The bigger issue is finding an operational hydrogen station. Station status can change, and a station listed online may be temporarily unavailable, out of fuel, or otherwise unable to serve a vehicle.
Check availability before driving to a station
The California Energy Commission separates open retail stations from stations that are temporarily non-operational and directs drivers to the California Fuel Cell Partnership’s operational-status system for current information. Drivers should check both the station’s current status and its posted per-kilogram price before making a trip.
- Locate a station that serves retail Mirai customers.
- Check its current operational status before leaving.
- Confirm the current hydrogen price per kilogram.
- Keep enough fuel for a backup station or an unexpected detour when possible.
A refill can therefore be inexpensive under a complimentary-fuel program—or cost more than $200 at a high per-kilogram price—but fuel availability may matter more than the arithmetic. The most accurate estimate is always the station’s current price multiplied by the kilograms the Mirai actually accepts.

Why is the Toyota Mirai refill often quoted as costing $201.60?
That figure uses an older $36-per-kilogram price and the Mirai’s approximate 5.6-kg capacity: 5.6 × $36 = $201.60. It is not a universal or necessarily current refill price.
How far can a 2026 Toyota Mirai travel on a full tank?
Toyota lists an EPA-estimated range of 402 miles for the 2026 Mirai. Real-world range varies with driving conditions, weather, vehicle condition, and refueling practices.
Does Toyota include free hydrogen with a new Mirai?
Toyota currently lists up to $15,000 of complimentary hydrogen for a purchase, limited to six years, or for a lease, limited to three years. The benefit has eligibility, timing, and fuel-card conditions, so buyers should confirm the current offer.
The Bottom Line
A Toyota Mirai refill does not have one fixed price. Using the nominal 5.6-kg tank capacity, it costs about $145.54 at $25.99/kg or $201.60 at $36/kg. Station pricing, the amount of hydrogen accepted, and Toyota’s complimentary-fuel terms can all change the amount a driver actually pays.
