The most useful changes are aimed at reducing the amount of time you spend hunting through menus: incoming calls stay compact, pinned Messages conversations are easier to reach, widgets and Live Activities bring information to the Dashboard, and supported cars gain better map gestures and display scaling.
Not every feature will appear in every vehicle. CarPlay still depends heavily on the head unit, screen size, automaker software and the individual app. Here is what actually changed, where to find it and why some options may be missing.

Liquid Glass changes the look of CarPlay
CarPlay adopts Apple’s Liquid Glass design language in iOS 26. Menus and controls have a more translucent appearance, icons have been redesigned and supported apps inherit the updated visual treatment through the CarPlay framework.
This is not a separate theme that has to be downloaded. It is part of the iOS 26 CarPlay interface. You can still control the basic appearance from the CarPlay display:

CarPlay generally uses a dark appearance by default in most vehicles. Select Always Dark if you do not want it switching automatically between light and dark modes. Other visual controls are under Settings → Wallpaper, Settings → Suggestions and Settings → Show Album Art. The exact controls can vary with the vehicle and display.
Incoming calls no longer take over the whole screen
In iOS 26, an incoming call can use a compact CarPlay interface instead of covering the entire display. You can see who is calling while navigation information—such as the next turn—remains visible.
That makes a meaningful difference on unfamiliar roads. You no longer have to choose between identifying the caller and keeping the next direction in view. This is specifically a CarPlay call-interface change; it should not be confused with the separate iPhone features Call Screening or Hold Assist.

React to messages with Tapbacks
CarPlay Messages now supports Tapbacks. When a message arrives, you can say “like that message” to apply a thumbs-up. You can also select Tapback and choose another available emoji.
The reaction is attached to that specific message and is visible to everyone in the conversation. The important detail is that CarPlay is not limited to an old fixed set of six reactions: iOS 26 supports choosing another emoji through the Tapback control, in line with the expanded Tapback system in Messages.
Find pinned conversations in CarPlay
Conversations pinned in the iPhone Messages app now appear in Messages on CarPlay. You still have to pin them from the phone:
- Open Messages on the iPhone.
- Touch and hold the conversation.
- Tap Pin.
When the car is connected, the pinned conversation should be available in CarPlay Messages. If Messages is not visible in the recent-app strip on the Dashboard, tap the Home button to open the full CarPlay app list.

Widgets bring more information to the Dashboard
Widgets are one of the more substantial additions in iOS 26. Compatible apps can put compact, glanceable information on CarPlay without requiring you to open a full app. That could include a status update, a reminder or another small piece of information designed to be read quickly.
A normal iPhone widget is not automatically a CarPlay widget. The developer must provide the appropriate CarPlay-compatible configuration, and the widget is rendered in a compact format rather than behaving like a full-size, interactive iPhone Home Screen widget.
How to add or arrange CarPlay widgets
Make these changes while the vehicle is stationary:
- On the iPhone, open Settings.
- Go to General → CarPlay.
- Select your vehicle.
- Tap Widgets → Add Widgets.
- Choose the widgets you want to use.
Return to Settings → General → CarPlay → [your car] → Widgets to remove widgets or drag them into a different order. The same screen includes Smart Rotate and Widget Suggestions.
Recommended Free Tools
The number of widget stacks depends on the display. A narrow or smaller screen may show fewer stacks than a wide display, so the same vehicle may not offer the same widget layout as a car with a larger screen.
Why an iPhone widget may be missing
- The app has not been updated to support CarPlay widgets.
- The developer has deliberately excluded that widget from CarPlay.
- Your display supports fewer widget stacks.
- The vehicle’s CarPlay implementation does not expose the required display configuration.
Adding a widget to the iPhone Home Screen therefore does not guarantee that it will appear in the car.
Live Activities can appear on CarPlay Dashboard
CarPlay Dashboard can now show Live Activities from supported apps. Apple’s examples include turn-by-turn activity from Maps, live sports updates, food-delivery estimates and flight information. Depending on the activity and the vehicle interface, the information may appear on Dashboard or as a CarPlay notification.

Live Activities are controlled at the app level on the iPhone:
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallSettings → Apps → [app] → Live Activities
Turning on that permission is necessary, but it is not sufficient for every activity to appear in CarPlay. The app must also provide an appropriate CarPlay presentation. A Live Activity that works on the iPhone will not automatically be shown in the vehicle.
Smart Display Zoom adapts CarPlay to some screens
Some vehicles gain Smart Display Zoom, which changes the scale of the CarPlay interface so it fits a particular screen shape or size more effectively. When enabled, CarPlay apps are automatically resized to the new scale.
Find it on the car’s display at:
CarPlay screen → Settings → Display → Smart Display Zoom
This is a conditional feature, not a universal iOS 26 setting. If the option is missing, that does not necessarily indicate a failed iOS update. Its availability depends on the vehicle’s screen configuration and how the head unit exposes the feature. Some vehicles have also shown inconsistent availability during iOS 26 testing.
Supported cars gain more multitouch map gestures
Navigation apps can use additional multitouch interactions in vehicles with compatible CarPlay hardware. Depending on the car and app, you may be able to:
- Pinch to zoom.
- Double-tap to zoom in.
- Double-tap with two fingers to zoom out.
- Move two fingers vertically to adjust map pitch.
- Rotate the map with two fingers.
These gestures are not guaranteed on every CarPlay touchscreen. The car must support multitouch, and the navigation app must implement the relevant CarPlay behavior. If pinch-to-zoom does nothing in your vehicle, that is likely a hardware or app-support limitation rather than a setting you have missed.

CarPlay app layouts and icon order are still customizable
Existing CarPlay apps receive the updated iOS 26 appearance through the CarPlay framework. Developers do not have to redesign every existing app just to receive the new visual treatment.
You can still decide which removable apps appear on the CarPlay Home screen:
- On the iPhone, open Settings.
- Tap General → CarPlay.
- Select [your car].
- Tap Customize.
- Rearrange the apps or remove the ones you do not want.
Only apps that can be removed show a delete control. Your changes take effect the next time the iPhone connects to CarPlay.

CarPlay Ultra is a separate system
CarPlay Ultra is not an iOS 26 switch that unlocks on every compatible vehicle. It requires deeper automaker integration and can extend into the instrument cluster and vehicle controls, including climate and radio functions. Apple initially launched it with Aston Martin vehicles and requires participating automaker hardware and software.
Some iOS 26 features—including widgets, Live Activities, Tapbacks, pinned conversations and the compact call interface—also extend to CarPlay Ultra. However, an iOS 26-compatible iPhone alone does not provide CarPlay Ultra.
Video in the car remains conditional
AirPlay video in the car requires automaker and vehicle support and is intended for use while the vehicle is not moving. It is not general-purpose video mirroring for every iOS 26 CarPlay system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCarPlay widgets are not full iPhone widgets
CarPlay widgets are intentionally limited to glanceable information. They use a compact vehicle presentation and do not offer the full interaction model of an iPhone Home Screen widget. App support is also required.

Common problems after updating to iOS 26
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| Widgets do not appear | Go to Settings → General → CarPlay → [your car] → Widgets. If the app is absent, it may not support CarPlay widgets or may need an update. |
| Live Activities are missing | Check Settings → Apps → [app] → Live Activities. The app must also support a CarPlay presentation. |
| Messages or Settings seem unavailable | Tap the CarPlay Home button to open the complete app list instead of relying on the recent-app strip. |
| Smart Display Zoom is not listed | Confirm that the vehicle’s screen configuration supports it. It is not present in every head unit. |
| CarPlay looks or behaves differently | CarPlay support varies by vehicle model, trim, screen, region and automaker software. The iPhone update alone cannot standardize those differences. |
Apple released iOS 26 on September 15, 2025. The features described here arrived in iOS 26.0 and remain part of the iOS 26 release line, whose latest listed iPhone release as of August 9, 2026 is iOS 26.5.2.
FAQ
Do all cars get every new CarPlay feature in iOS 26?
No. The Liquid Glass interface, compact call view and Messages improvements are broadly part of iOS 26 CarPlay, but widgets, Live Activities, Smart Display Zoom and multitouch map gestures depend on the vehicle, display, head unit and app support.
How do I add widgets to CarPlay in iOS 26?
On the iPhone, go to Settings → General → CarPlay → [your car] → Widgets → Add Widgets. Make the change while the vehicle is stationary. Only apps with a CarPlay-compatible widget configuration can appear.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why are my iPhone Live Activities not showing in CarPlay?
Open Settings → Apps → [app] → Live Activities and make sure permission is enabled. The app must also support a CarPlay-suitable Live Activity presentation; iPhone Live Activity support alone does not guarantee CarPlay display.
Is CarPlay Ultra included with iOS 26?
No. CarPlay Ultra requires participating automaker hardware and software integration. Updating an iPhone to iOS 26 does not add CarPlay Ultra to a standard CarPlay vehicle.
The Bottom Line
iOS 26 makes CarPlay more useful between destinations rather than radically changing how it drives navigation. The compact call view, pinned Messages conversations, Tapbacks, widgets and Live Activities reduce the need to leave the Dashboard, while Smart Display Zoom and additional map gestures improve the experience in vehicles that support them. If a feature is missing, check the app and CarPlay settings—but also expect the car’s hardware and automaker software to be the deciding factor.
