Hennessey’s Driver-Focused Hypercar: What Project Overlord Means—and How It Relates to Blackbird

Project Overlord was John Hennessey’s 2024 codename for a driver-focused hypercar. Blackbird fits the brief, but Hennessey has not confirmed they are the same car.

Project Overlord was the codename John Hennessey used in 2024 for a planned, driver-focused hypercar. He said the car was expected to enter production by 2028 at the latest, with a priority on the sensations of driving rather than chasing speed records. In August 2026, Hennessey announced a manual, naturally aspirated hypercar called Blackbird that sounds aligned with that brief—but the company has not explicitly confirmed that Blackbird is Project Overlord.

What was Project Overlord?

Project Overlord was a codename, not a publicly specified production model. In a May 31, 2024 interview with The Manual, Hennessey founder and CEO John Hennessey described it as the planned next car after the Venom F5. He forecast production by 2028 at the latest, saying: “So 2028 at the latest, and that program is codenamed Project Overlord.”

At the time, Hennessey said the company expected to build 99 Venom F5s, probably through 2027 or 2028. The timing was a forecast in a 2024 interview, not confirmation that Overlord entered production on that schedule.

What was the car supposed to feel like?

Hennessey framed Overlord as a contrast to the Venom F5’s emphasis on extreme speed. He described the intended appeal in sensory terms: “Not just the speed, but it just have just Automotive joy and excitement. The sound, the smell the vibration, as well as the g-forces.” He also said the project “is not about setting records, it’s not about VMAX or zero to 60 or 0 to 40 and back to zero.” Those quotations are reproduced as printed in The Manual interview.

  • AUTHENTIC DESIGN: Meticulously detailed 1:38 scale die-cast metal model of the 2016 Pagani Huayra BC supercar with stunning metallic finish and precise exterior details

  • PERFECT DISPLAY SIZE: Compact 5-inch length makes it ideal for collectors while maintaining impressive detail and proportion
  • QUALITY MATERIALS: Manufactured using safe, high-grade materials suitable for ages 3 and up, combining durability with authentic styling

That gives the codename its context: the ambition was not simply to produce another faster hypercar, but to put driver involvement and the character of the experience first. The interview did not establish a final specification, production name, or delivery date.

Is Project Overlord the Hennessey Blackbird?

Blackbird is a plausible match, but the identity has not been confirmed in the available company announcement. On August 3, 2026, Hennessey revealed Blackbird as its third hypercar, following the Venom GT and Venom F5. The company describes it as a touring car focused on driver engagement and long-distance usability—an intent that resembles Hennessey’s earlier description of Overlord. The timing and philosophy support an inference, not proof that the two names refer to the same program.

How Blackbird’s brief differs from the Venom F5

The contrast Hennessey drew in 2024 was one of purpose: the Venom F5 was associated with extreme speed, while Overlord was described as a car for sound, vibration, control, and the physical experience of driving. Blackbird’s announced naturally aspirated V8, gated manual, rear-wheel drive, and screen-free cockpit fit that more hands-on direction. Hennessey also calls it a touring car, pointing to long-distance usability as part of the brief.
