Its tent section opened upward and extended rearward, while a sliding sleeping platform made room to stand inside. The report described a third prototype in development and a hoped-for production start later that year; it does not establish whether the camper is available today.
How Hatchet’s pop-top was designed to work
Unlike a roof that simply lifts vertically, Hatchet’s tent was described as rising and extending rearward on a frame. Four ventilation windows had zip-up canvas shades. Inside, the sleeper platform slid forward to open up standing space at the back of the Jeep.
New Atlas reported 6.4 feet (195 cm) of standing height in that rear area, two small storage trays built into the composite platform, and integrated gas struts. The article said setup could take as little as one minute and breakdown roughly two minutes; those are reported claims, not independently tested timings. New Atlas’s August 31, 2021 report is the source for these design details.
Fitment, weight and roof details in the 2021 report
The camper was designed specifically for the four-door Wrangler JL Unlimited. New Atlas said it would not fit two-door JL models or older JKU Wranglers, so the reported design should not be treated as a universal Wrangler camper kit.

- Weight: Hatchet aimed to keep the camper below 200 lb (91 kg). This was a target, not a verified production-unit weight.
- Added height: The fiberglass roof was reported to add roughly 10 inches (25 cm) to vehicle height.
- Roof provisions: A recessed roof design was described as making space for one or two 100-W solar panels and traction boards. The report does not establish payload limits or electrical-system specifications.
- Sleeping surface: The setup was described with an Exped MegaMat inflatable/foam pad. The exact size and model generation were not identified, and current package contents are unknown.
All of these specifications describe the design as covered in 2021, not confirmed current production specifications.
Is the Hatchet camper available now?
The 2021 report said Hatchet was working on a third prototype and hoped to begin production later that year. That historical plan does not confirm that production began, that the camper remains on sale, or what it costs today. The available information also does not establish current warranty terms, revisions, installation availability or package contents. Confirm those details directly with the maker before treating the concept as a purchase option.

- Vehicle fitment: Confirm generation, model year, body style and Unlimited configuration. Do not infer compatibility across JL and JKU vehicles.
- Roof work: Find out whether the conversion replaces the factory hardtop or modifies it, and what parts are included.
- Weight: Request installed weight and the net increase over the factory roof. A shipped weight, a replacement roof’s weight and net added weight are different measures.
- Height and sleeping space: Check closed vehicle height, interior standing height and bed dimensions against your garage, route and occupants.
- Access and operation: Confirm whether there is inside access to the bed, how the sleeping area converts, and the practical setup and breakdown process.
- Roof loads: Ask for the rated limits and mounting details for solar panels, traction boards or other gear; a design provision alone does not establish load capacity.
