His key innovation was a system that made tractor and implement work together: a three-point linkage mounted an implement to the tractor, hydraulics raised and lowered it, and draft control used the implement’s resistance to help improve traction. That design became the foundation of the Ferguson TE20, a tractor produced in more than half a million examples through 1956.
How did Harry Ferguson’s three-point linkage work?
Before Ferguson’s system, implements were commonly towed behind a tractor. Ferguson’s approach connected the implement to the tractor at three points and used hydraulic lift to raise or lower it. The linkage made the tractor and implement a working unit rather than two separate machines joined by a towbar.
The system developed from Ferguson’s earlier work on draft control. The Ferguson Family Museum dates his patent application for the third hitch point to 1928 and describes draft control as an earlier stage in the system’s development (Ferguson Family Museum).
Why mounting the implement mattered
Mounting made an implement easier to raise for transport and tied its operation more closely to the tractor. According to the Danish Ferguson Museum, the geometry could also transfer some of the implement’s resistance as weight onto the tractor’s rear wheels, increasing their grip without added ballast. This is a historical explanation of the design’s intended mechanical advantage, not a quantified comparison against towed equipment (Danish Ferguson Museum).

Even without experience, it can be gradually assembled. After the kit is assembled, it is a good display model and background decoration.
- 🚜Excellent Gift: The finished model is beautiful and highly collectible. can be used as high quality decoration and collectible. Place in living room, bedroom, office etc. Ideal for MOC collectors & tech enthusiasts! Can be used as a gift or prize for Birthday, Christmas, Graduation or any other occasion.
- 🚜Please note: This product contains many parts, some of which are very small. The assembly process is complex and challenging, requiring strong manual dexterity and comprehension skills. It is recommended for users aged 16 and above.
Draft control helped the tractor respond to the force required to pull an implement, including changing soil resistance. Together, linkage geometry, hydraulic lift and draft control were the important advance—not hydraulics alone, and not the invention of the tractor itself.
From the Black Tractor prototype to production
The 1933 Black Tractor
The Ferguson Family Museum dates the Black Tractor prototype to 1933 and identifies it as a precursor to the TE20. Its account describes the prototype as bringing together linkage, hydraulics, weight transfer and automatic depth control. The museum identifies the tractor as displayed at the Ulster Transport Museum; current display and visitor access should be checked with the museum before planning a visit (Ferguson Family Museum).

If you meet any problems during the building process of this handicraft, ROKR will provide you with solutions and guidance.
The Ferguson-Brown
The next step was production. National Museums Scotland describes the Ferguson-Brown as the first production tractor to use the three-point linkage and hydraulic lift. It reports that approximately 1,350 were made between 1936 and 1939 (National Museums Scotland).
How did the TE20 become the Little Grey Fergie?
The TE20—“Tractor England”—was the first product of Ferguson’s postwar manufacturing arrangement with Standard Motor Company. The first tractor left the Banner Lane production line on 6 July 1946. The Ferguson Family Museum reports 315 built in the first production year and a total of 517,651 TE20s, including variants, by the end of production in 1956 (Ferguson Family Museum).
Those production numbers show how the integrated system moved from a prototype and a relatively small early production run to a widely made tractor. The TE20’s light size and lower running costs also helped define its appeal, according to Massey Ferguson’s 2016 retrospective, which describes it as rated at 20 horsepower (Massey Ferguson).

- Build your own tractor: Assemble a mechanical 3D wooden puzzle from 148 wooden parts, with 16 spare parts included. This tractor model kit is designed for adults and teens ages 15+ who enjoy hands-on model building.
- Mechanical motion: A rubber-band motor drives the tractor forward and backward. Turn the steerable front wheels, open the hood and explore the moving pistons as you bring your farm tractor model to life.
- A rewarding build: Plan approximately 3 hours for this intermediate, 3/5 difficulty project; actual time varies with experience. Laser-cut plywood parts assemble without glue. Assembly requires a craft knife, scissors and three coins up to 16 mm in diameter; these items are not included.
- Compact display model: The finished tractor measures 6.22 x 2.83 x 4.69 inches (L x W x H) at 1:20 scale. Made in Poland, this wooden model kit for adults combines a hands-on building project with a detailed model to display.
- Parts and instructions included: The kit contains 4 plywood sheets with model parts, 16 spare parts, assembly instructions, 20 toothpicks, 2 elastic bands, a candle for waxing and sandpaper. A hands-on gift for tractor enthusiasts and model builders.
TE20 specifications varied by version
Not every TE20 had the same engine or specification. The Ferguson Family Museum says early tractors used an imported Continental engine; a 2088 cc Standard engine became available in September 1947 and was fitted exclusively from July 1948. A separate collection record for a 1951 TEA-20 at Museums Victoria specifies a four-cylinder petrol engine rated at 24 brake horsepower. That figure describes the museum’s particular TEA-20, not every TE20 (Museums Victoria).

The strongest evidence for the Ferguson System’s impact is its progression from a mechanical concept to a production tractor made at large scale, and the lasting influence of the mounted-implement approach. Massey Ferguson’s retrospective describes the TE20 as a milestone in tractor history; the museum production histories document the prototype, Ferguson-Brown and TE20’s growing production numbers.

The available sources do not establish a worldwide adoption rate or provide an independent quantified estimate of global productivity gains. It is therefore more accurate to describe Ferguson’s global impact through the spread and continuing influence of the system than to assign it a specific share of world tractor use or a numerical yield increase.
