The “Harley-Davidson car” that appeared at Born-Free 15 was not a new production model, and Harley-Davidson has not entered the automobile market. It was the Road Glidester, a one-off, four-wheeled custom built by fabricator Aaron Boss around the powertrain of a Harley-Davidson Road Glide ST.

Boss unveiled the machine at Born-Free 15 on June 22, 2024, at Oak Canyon Park in Silverado, California. Bringing a Harley-powered car to one of America’s best-known custom-motorcycle gatherings was the point: the Road Glidester turned a motorcycle donor into an unexpected land-speed-style statement on four wheels.

Boss, a fabricator associated with Roland Sands Design, had reportedly considered the idea for years. His goal was partly technical and partly cultural: to arrive at a chopper show with four wheels and make the motorcycle crowd reconsider what a Harley-powered machine could be.
That made Born-Free a particularly appropriate debut venue. The event is built around custom motorcycles, invited builders, unusual fabrication, personal style, and one-off machines created specifically for the show. Harley-Davidson’s recap of Born-Free 15 described an event with thousands of motorcycles, hundreds of vendors, live music, and an invited-builder competition. The Road Glidester fit the event by retaining a Harley heart while borrowing heavily from hot rods, land-speed racers, and racing cars.
The Road Glide ST donor supplied the Harley hardware
Boss reportedly dismantled a new 2023 Harley-Davidson Road Glide ST to create the project. The donor supplied the 117-cubic-inch Milwaukee-Eight engine, as well as selected stock controls and instrumentation.

Although the Road Glidester has a car-like chassis, its engine, controls, and overall concept are rooted in Harley-Davidson’s touring platform. A related Harley-Davidson Road Glide diecast model can be an interesting collectible for fans of the donor motorcycle, but it should not be confused with a scale replica of the one-off Road Glidester.
Reported Road Glidester specifications
| Component | Reported detail |
|---|---|
| Donor motorcycle | 2023 Harley-Davidson Road Glide ST |
| Engine | 117-cubic-inch Harley-Davidson Milwaukee-Eight V-twin |
| Forced induction | ProCharger supercharger |
| Reported output | Approximately 200 horsepower |
| Transmission | Baker six-speed with reverse |
| Rear end | Winters Performance quick-change unit |
| Chassis | Handmade custom structure |
| Other reported hardware | Adjustable suspension, power steering, carbon-fiber and magnesium components, and a Dallara prototype roof scoop |
The approximately 200-horsepower figure should be treated as a reported project specification, not as an independently verified dyno result. The available reporting does not include a dyno sheet or a firsthand test confirming the number.
A motorcycle engine in a purpose-built car chassis
The Road Glidester’s body and chassis were handmade rather than adapted from an existing production automobile. Its proportions draw on several different forms of performance machinery:
- 1950s belly-tanker racers: The long, smooth profile and streamlined body suggest the stripped-down shapes used for early land-speed experimentation.
- Postwar hot rods: The project carries the hot-rod tradition of transforming available mechanical parts into something personal and difficult to categorize.
- Top-fuel dragsters and trophy trucks: These influences help explain the combination of a narrow, purposeful body with visibly serious chassis and suspension hardware.
- Formula and prototype racing: The cockpit, roof scoop, and low-slung proportions add a race-car character rather than making the vehicle look like a conventional street car.
- Aerospace design: Smooth transitions and aerodynamic surfaces give the car the appearance of a compact aircraft fuselage placed on wheels.
It is this mixture—not simply the Harley engine—that makes the car unusual. A motorcycle-powered four-wheeler is already rare, but Boss did not build a basic engine swap into an ordinary car. He created a new chassis around the motorcycle-derived powertrain and used the form to connect custom bikes, land-speed racing, drag racing, and aerospace-inspired design.

Why the supercharged Milwaukee-Eight matters
A stock motorcycle engine installed in a lightweight custom car would already produce a distinctive machine. The Road Glidester reportedly goes further with a ProCharger supercharger fitted to the Milwaukee-Eight 117.
Forced induction increases the engineering demands of a build. The engine, fuel system, intake tract, cooling, transmission, rear end, chassis, and controls all have to work together. In this case, the supercharger also reinforces the car’s visual and cultural message: this is not merely a Harley engine placed in a novelty body, but a deliberately engineered performance project.
That does not make the reported output, reliability, or roadworthiness automatically established. The sources reviewed identify the supercharger and approximate power figure, but they do not provide a complete dyno report, long-term durability data, or a verified performance test.
Car-style systems, motorcycle-style identity
The build reportedly uses several components associated more naturally with cars and race vehicles than with a touring motorcycle. These include adjustable suspension, power steering, a Winters Performance quick-change rear end, carbon-fiber and magnesium parts, and a Dallara prototype roof scoop. A Baker six-speed transmission with reverse helps address a basic limitation of adapting a motorcycle powertrain to a four-wheeled vehicle.
Reverse is especially significant in a car-based layout. A motorcycle gearbox is designed for a two-wheeled vehicle that can generally be maneuvered by hand when stationary. A four-wheeled custom with a cockpit, wider body, and car-like proportions benefits from an integrated reverse function. The combination of motorcycle controls and car-oriented chassis hardware is central to the Road Glidester’s character.
Was the Road Glidester street legal?
That status should not be assumed. Reporting on the project said Boss intended to make the car street legal in California and planned later local and El Mirage testing. The available sources do not establish that final registration, California approval, regular public-road use, or a completed high-speed test program was achieved.
That distinction matters because a one-off vehicle built from a motorcycle donor may need to satisfy requirements involving equipment, lighting, emissions, braking, noise, identification, insurance, and inspection. A project’s stated intention to pursue registration is not the same as a completed approval.

Likewise, the Road Glidester should not be described as having reached a particular speed unless a later official source provides verified test results. Its land-speed-inspired shape and planned El Mirage testing explain the project’s direction, but they are not proof of a recorded run.
Why debut it at a motorcycle show?
Born-Free is not primarily a conventional product-launch event. Its invited builders are selected to create and display distinctive machines, often using the show as a deadline for a project that would not fit neatly into a manufacturer’s catalog.
The Road Glidester used that setting strategically. At a car show, a Harley-powered custom might be treated as an engine-swap curiosity. At Born-Free, it challenged the boundaries of the event itself. It had four wheels, a cockpit, a car-like chassis, and a belly-tanker silhouette, yet its mechanical center and controls connected it directly to the motorcycle world surrounding it.
Boss’s reported ambition to be the first person to arrive at the chopper show with four wheels captures the point better than a conventional specification sheet does. The Road Glidester was an engineering exercise, but it was also a cultural provocation: a way to ask how far the visual and mechanical language of a Harley custom could be stretched before it became something else.

The debut does not signal a Harley-Davidson automobile program. Harley-Davidson supplied the donor motorcycle and its engine architecture, but the Road Glidester was a privately built custom project, not a factory-developed product.

A production motorcycle can become the starting point for a radically different vehicle when a builder is willing to fabricate the chassis, redesign the packaging, solve the steering and suspension problems, and accept the compromises that follow.
That is why the Road Glidester attracted attention beyond its novelty. It showed a familiar Harley-Davidson powertrain being interpreted through the visual language of belly tanks, dragsters, prototype racers, and aircraft. The result was not a car Harley-Davidson suddenly began selling; it was a one-off answer to a much more interesting custom-builder question: what happens when a Harley is given four wheels and no obligation to resemble the motorcycle it came from?
