Harley-Davidson has ended production of the X350 and X500 for Japan, and dealers were reported to be selling remaining new stock with no further production planned. Japan’s motorcycle market also contracted—but the available evidence does not establish that falling sales caused Harley-Davidson’s decision.
What happened to the X350 and X500 in Japan?
Car Watch reported on June 10, 2026, that Harley-Davidson Japan had announced the end of production for both models, with no additional production planned. Authorized dealers would sell their remaining new inventory until it was gone. A Harley-Davidson Chiryū dealer notice dated August 31, 2026, also described production as ending with the 2026 model year. Car Watch’s report and the dealer notice support the discontinuation; they do not establish why the decision was made.
Harley-Davidson Japan’s model pages still show 2026 model information. Those pages are useful for specifications, but their continued display is not evidence that production continued after the discontinuation announcement. Remaining inventory is dealer-specific and can change, so contact an authorized dealer to check availability.
What were the X350 and X500?
Harley-Davidson Japan positioned the X350 and X500 as smaller-displacement entry points in its lineup. The listed specifications and starting MSRPs are:

Did falling motorcycle sales cause the discontinuation?
That has not been demonstrated. Honda Motor’s annual report estimates total Japanese motorcycle demand at approximately 350,000 units in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, around 5% below the prior fiscal year. This is a measure of the overall market, not sales of the X350 or X500. Honda Motor’s annual reports provide the market estimate.

Harley-Davidson’s investor-report materials describe weaker retail sales in Asia-Pacific, including lower sales in Japan and China, as a factor in regional weakness. They do not break out X350 or X500 sales, and do not say that Japan’s market decline prompted the production decision. Harley-Davidson’s annual-report materials offer regional context, not a model-specific explanation.
There is also a separate registration measure that should not be mistaken for model sales: the Japan Fair Trade Commission says Harley-Davidson vehicles ranked first in new registrations among imported small motorcycles in both 2023 and 2024. That category-wide ranking is neither a count of X350/X500 sales nor evidence against the later market contraction. The Japan Fair Trade Commission’s 2025 release gives the ranking.

What is known—and what remains unclear?
- Established: Production of the X350 and X500 for Japan ended, and contemporaneous reporting said dealers would sell remaining new stock without further production planned.
- Market context: Honda’s fiscal-2026 estimate shows an overall Japanese motorcycle-demand decline of around 5% to approximately 350,000 units.
- Not established: The available sources do not provide X350 or X500 sales totals, model profitability, or a direct company explanation for ending production.
It is therefore reasonable to view a softer market as possible background pressure, but not to state that it caused the discontinuation. The evidence also does not support attributing the decision to weak model sales, profitability, regulation or a strategic retreat.
