It is an educational, interactive demonstration, not a tool for designing, diagnosing, or tuning a real engine.
What Engine Simulator does
Engine Simulator is a real-time internal-combustion simulation built specifically to produce engine audio and simulate engine response. You can operate controls such as ignition, starter, throttle, clutch, and gears, then observe the simulated engine react. A dynamometer mode provides an additional way to explore the simulation.
That makes it useful for curiosity-driven experimentation: you can see and hear what happens when you operate the controls or change engine parameters. The display is part of the simulation, however; it should not be mistaken for validated measurements of a real engine.
How to try the keyboard controls
The upstream project documents these basic controls. Exact behavior can depend on the selected engine and the build you are using.

What it cannot tell you about a real car
The project author, Ange Yaghi, states in the upstream README: “This is a real-time internal combustion engine simulation designed specifically to produce engine audio and simulate engine response characteristics. It is NOT a scientific tool and cannot be expected to provide accurate figures for the purposes of engineering or engine tuning.” Treat that limitation as central, not as fine print.

- Do not use its output to choose real-world engine parts, set tuning values, or validate a design.
- Do not interpret a simulated dynamometer display or RPM-hold feature as a substitute for measurements from a real engine and proper test equipment.
- Use it to explore concepts and enjoy the sound and interaction, not to make decisions that affect a vehicle’s safety or reliability.

Original Engine Simulator
The upstream README directs users to download a ready-to-use build from the project’s Releases page and describes running the extracted Windows executable. It says source builds currently work only on Windows. Building from source requires development dependencies including CMake, SDL2, SDL2_image, Boost, Flex, and Bison; most readers interested in trying the simulator should start with the supplied release build rather than compiling it.
The release listing identifies v0.1.11a as a prerelease. Check the live releases page for the current download and status rather than assuming that identifier is the latest stable version.

Open Engine Simulator fork
A separate project called Open Engine Simulator documents packages for macOS, Windows, and Linux. It is independently maintained and is not an official release of Ange Yaghi’s original project. Its platform availability should not be attributed to upstream Engine Simulator.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does it connect to a car or need an accessory?
No car connection or special accessory is established as a requirement for Engine Simulator. A suggestion that a Bluetooth dongle could display information from a real car is speculation about a separate idea, not a documented simulator feature or workflow. The simulator’s documented use is to operate a virtual engine through its own controls.
