It was a government-industry emergency-response demonstration, not a retail truck test.
How far did the H2Rescue truck travel?
Guinness World Records lists the H2Rescue achievement at 1,806 miles (2,906.47 km), completed on October 25, 2024. Because Guinness created this record category for the attempt, the truck established the category’s mark; it did not break a previous record-holder’s mark in that category. Guinness World Records’ listing describes the record and attempt.
The figure is a dated achievement, not necessarily the current record: Guinness notes that records can change daily and may not be published immediately. Its live listing is the place to check for a later update.
How was the record attempt verified?
The attempt began October 18, 2024, with GPS-tracked loops around Oakland, then continued through central California. A Guinness adjudicator confirmed the hydrogen tank was sealed before the drive. The U.S. Department of Energy says the truck was closely monitored and the result validated. Guinness’s account of the attempt and the DOE account describe the verification.

What the drive involved
DOE reports that the truck carried 175 kilograms of hydrogen and consumed 168 kilograms during the trip. It averaged 50–55 mph on public roads in temperatures ranging from 60°F to 80°F. The roughly 33,000-pound prototype used an Accelera fuel-cell engine and a 250 kW traction motor. These are demonstration conditions and figures, not a consumer truck specification sheet. DOE’s technical summary provides the operating details.
What is the H2Rescue truck?
H2Rescue is a prototype fuel-cell emergency-response vehicle developed by Accelera with U.S. government partners. The collaboration includes the Department of Energy, the Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate, FEMA, the Department of Defense and the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center. ERDC also identifies the Army Ground Vehicle Systems Center and U.S. Naval Research Laboratory as partners. ERDC’s project account describes the partnership.

The project is designed to support disaster relief and provide mobile power. Guinness reports a design capability to power 25 homes for 72 hours in a disaster; that is a stated capability, not a result demonstrated during the record drive. Guinness’s record page gives that figure.
What the emissions figure does—and does not—mean
DOE reports that the truck emitted zero pounds of CO2 during the 1,800-mile trip, compared with 664 pounds it estimates a standard internal-combustion vehicle would emit over the same distance. This is a vehicle-use comparison. It does not account for emissions from producing, compressing, transporting or dispensing the hydrogen, so it cannot establish that the full hydrogen fuel pathway had zero emissions. DOE’s trip summary reports the comparison; DOE’s hydrogen-production overview describes the broader production context.

- The Hydrogen fuel trolley uses zinc particles and food grade citric acid to synthesize hydrogen, and then uses the produced hydrogen and air to generate electricity to drive the trolley.
- During the experiment, please use 80℃ hot water for Combination reaction (if the water temperature is low, the amount of hydrogen and air pressure from the Combination reaction are insufficient, the fuel cell cannot be used for power generation), and then take off the plug of the vent pipe at the lower part of the fuel cell, release the gas in the rubber hose immediately, and then plug it back immediately, so that only pure hydrogen and air are in the fuel cell, so that the fuel cell can generate hydrogen air power.
DOE separately estimates that a fuel-cell truck of this size could displace approximately 1,825 gallons of fuel and reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by 2.5 metric tons annually. Those are estimates of annual potential, not measurements from the record run. The DOE summary identifies them as potential benefits.

The run demonstrates that this particular prototype completed a long, monitored trip without refueling under its reported conditions. It does not by itself establish typical commercial range, cost, fueling convenience or superiority over battery-electric or diesel trucks. A useful comparison would need matched payload and road conditions, refueling availability and time, emergency power capability, and lifecycle emissions calculated for a specified hydrogen production pathway.
