The H2Rescue hydrogen fuel-cell truck traveled 1,806 miles (2,906.47 km) without refueling, according to its Guinness World Records listing. The run took place in California on October 25, 2024. It was a monitored record attempt by a specialized emergency-response prototype—not a typical range figure for commercial hydrogen trucks.

What was the hydrogen truck record?

Guinness lists the distance as 2,906.47 km (1,806 miles), achieved by Accelera by Cummins’ H2Rescue on October 25, 2024, in Sacramento, California. The U.S. Department of Energy describes the journey more broadly as taking place in California, while the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) describes the route as Oakland to West Sacramento. Those accounts establish a California run; Sacramento is the location given in the Guinness listing.

Guinness notes that records can change and that new or updated listings may not appear online immediately. Its live listing is the source for the current record figure cited here.

How much hydrogen did H2Rescue use?

The DOE says the truck carried 175 kilograms of hydrogen and consumed 168 kilograms during the trip. The record is therefore the distance achieved on the reported fill, not a claim that every kilogram loaded was used before the truck stopped.

  • The Hydrogen fuel trolley uses zinc particles and food grade citric acid to synthesize hydrogen, and then uses the produced hydrogen and air to generate electricity to drive the trolley.
  • During the experiment, please use 80℃ hot water for Combination reaction (if the water temperature is low, the amount of hydrogen and air pressure from the Combination reaction are insufficient, the fuel cell cannot be used for power generation), and then take off the plug of the vent pipe at the lower part of the fuel cell, release the gas in the rubber hose immediately, and then plug it back immediately, so that only pure hydrogen and air are in the fuel cell, so that the fuel cell can generate hydrogen air power.

What kind of truck made the run?

H2Rescue is a Kenworth T370 heavy-duty fuel-cell electric prototype developed for emergency response. The DOE describes it as weighing approximately 33,000 pounds and using a Cummins Accelera fuel-cell engine with a 250-kilowatt traction motor. It was designed as an emergency-support vehicle, not presented in these sources as a production truck available to commercial buyers.

The project brought together Accelera by Cummins and federal partners. DOE names its Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office and Vehicle Technologies Office; ERDC’s account also identifies the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center, U.S. Army Ground Vehicle Systems Center, Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate, U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, FEMA, and Department of Defense.

How was the record attempt conducted?

According to the DOE, a Guinness adjudicator verified that the hydrogen tank was sealed before the drive. ERDC says it was verified sealed throughout the journey. The drive involved public-road conditions, including rush-hour traffic; the DOE reports speeds of 50–55 mph and temperatures ranging from 60–80°F.

These details help describe the conditions of this attempt, but they do not turn it into a standardized comparison with other trucks. Vehicle class, weight and payload, route, speed, weather, fueling infrastructure and measurement protocol all affect how useful a range comparison is.

What does the result say about hydrogen-truck range?

It shows that this particular emergency-response prototype covered 1,806 miles in the reported record run on one fill. It does not establish a normal operating range for hydrogen trucks generally, or predict the range a commercial fleet truck would achieve with a different load, route, duty cycle or fueling setup. The sources do not provide a controlled head-to-head comparison with another heavy-duty vehicle.

How does the record connect to H2Rescue’s emergency role?

The project grew from an effort to support emergencies such as California wildfires, according to ERDC. Guinness says the prototype can power 25 homes for 72 hours in a disaster situation. That is a stated emergency-power capability, distinct from the 1,806-mile distance record; the Guinness listing does not describe it as a separate test result.

What do the emissions figures mean?

The DOE reports zero pounds of CO₂ from the truck over the trip, compared with 664 pounds for a standard internal-combustion vehicle over the same distance. This is a vehicle-operation comparison. It does not account for emissions from producing or delivering the hydrogen, or manufacturing the truck, so it is not a lifecycle emissions result.

The DOE also estimates that a truck of this type could displace approximately 1,825 gallons of fuel and reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by 2.5 metric tons annually in a use-case comparison. Those are estimated annual figures, not measured outcomes from the record drive.

What should readers compare with another truck?

A useful comparison needs more than a headline range number. Check the distance per fill alongside the hydrogen mass used, vehicle class and weight or payload, route and speed conditions, access to fueling, emergency-power capability, and whether any emissions figure covers vehicle operation or the full fuel lifecycle. The record demonstrates what H2Rescue accomplished under its reported conditions; it is not a commercial fleet benchmark.
