Is the Gran Turismo movie based on a true story?
Yes. Sony Pictures describes the film as based on Mardenborough’s true story. He said the aim was to tell that story, while also making clear that the movie is a dramatized sports biopic, not a documentary. It was directed by Neill Blomkamp and written by Jason Hall and Zach Baylin. Sony Pictures’ film page provides the official synopsis and credits; Mardenborough discussed the film’s relationship to his life with the Los Angeles Times on September 1, 2023.

What the film changes
The movie compresses events and fictionalizes characters. Mardenborough entered the third GT Academy in 2011; the inaugural competition was held in 2008 and was won by Lucas Ordóñez. The film’s trainer Jack Salter is fictionalized and loosely based on Mardenborough’s former engineer, Ricardo Divila. Mardenborough said his Academy experience lasted a week and was more intense than the film depicts. Those changes shape the drama, but the central game-to-racing premise is real.
How did Jann Mardenborough go from Gran Turismo to professional racing?
In 2011, Mardenborough entered GT Academy, a Nissan- and Sony-sponsored competition that used Gran Turismo to identify potential drivers. The FIA profile says he beat 90,000 entrants, advanced through Race Camp and became a professional Nissan driver. The FIA document does not state its publication year; the 90,000 figure refers to entrants in the 2011 competition, not a current program or a present-day success rate. The FIA profile records his subsequent participation in British GT, Formula 3, GP3 and endurance racing, including Le Mans and the Spa 24 Hours in 2013 and Le Mans in 2014.

His progression continued beyond the Academy. In 2015, Nissan described his move to an LMP1 race seat after earlier LMP2 and single-seater racing, along with the detailed performance-data and race-weekend analysis involved in his preparation. Nissan’s February 12, 2015 interview documents that stage of his career.

That record matters because winning a game-based selection opportunity was only the start. Professional credentials followed real-car instruction, evaluation, coaching and competition—not simply time spent playing.
Which racing skills can transfer from a game to a real car?
Mardenborough has said that Gran Turismo helped him recognize some basic controls and responses. Braking, throttle inputs, steering and the car’s movement felt familiar when he began driving on track. In his account, “Aside from the additional sense of vibration and feedback through the steering wheel and seats, the car handled the way that GT had prepared me for.” That is evidence of what he experienced, not a guarantee that every player or simulator will produce the same result. What did not transfer automatically?
One of Mardenborough’s biggest adjustments was where to look. After years of playing on a 17-inch screen, he initially looked too low rather than directing his vision farther down the track. He said correcting the habit took months: “This took months of reprogramming and adjustment.” A real car also provides vibration and physical feedback through the steering wheel and seat—sensations a screen cannot reproduce in the same way.
The difference is not just hardware. On a real track, a driver must learn to interpret the car’s physical responses and use appropriate reference points while operating in a real environment. Mardenborough’s transition illustrates that familiarity with controls can be useful, but the visual and physical demands still require adaptation and supervised practice.

Does sim racing make someone a real racing driver?
Not by itself. Sim racing can help a player build familiarity with racing controls and may provide a route into a selection program. Mardenborough’s case shows that such a route can lead to professional motorsport. But his achievement depended on being selected, completing training and proving himself in real cars and real competition.
His experience also does not establish how likely other players are to follow the same path. The sources documenting his career do not provide a comparative success rate for sim racers entering professional motorsport or a controlled study showing how broadly the skills transfer. His story is proof that the transition is possible—not that playing a racing game is equivalent to racing professionally or guarantees a similar opportunity.
Where can you watch the film or play the game?
Sony Pictures lists Gran Turismo in Blu-ray and digital formats; availability can vary by territory and retailer. Its official film page has format information. Gran Turismo 7 is a related game available for PS5 and PS4, as identified by PlayStation. Playing it may be an enjoyable way to engage with the sport, but it does not confer real-world driving qualifications.
