There is no verified, universal “safe horsepower” limit for a stock-internal GR86 FA24. HKS and GReddy publish different manufacturer test figures for their turbo kits, but neither figure establishes long-term durability or a threshold that is safe for every car. A realistic power goal depends on the exact kit and calibration, fuel, installation, vehicle condition, how the car is driven, and local emissions rules.
Start with the stock GR86 baseline
Toyota’s 2024 U.S. GR86 brochure lists the naturally aspirated 2.4-liter FA24 at 228 hp at 7,000 rpm and 184 lb-ft at 3,700 rpm. It also specifies a 12.5:1 compression ratio and 93-octane-or-higher fuel. Those factory figures are a useful reference, not a direct dyno comparison with the turbo-kit figures below; the sources do not establish that all measurements use the same convention or test method. What the published turbo-kit figures show
These are manufacturer-reported results for specific setups, not independently established safe-power ratings. PS is not interchangeable with U.S. mechanical horsepower, and the cited product pages do not make every measurement convention directly comparable. Do not read the values as wheel horsepower unless the source says so.

The results are not an apples-to-apples kit shootout: the pages describe different products and test configurations, and do not establish matching dynos, correction methods, fuels, or output conventions. The stock internals, clutch, and injectors in HKS’s stated setup—and the stock engine and fuel system in GReddy’s—describe those tests only. They do not demonstrate how long those components will last under every use or tune.

Why a peak number does not answer “How much is safe?”
A peak output is a result under a particular test configuration; a safe-power claim would need to establish reliability over time under defined conditions. The cited materials do not provide controlled, long-term failure-rate comparisons or an independent endurance-tested threshold for every stock FA24. That means neither 290 PS nor 366 PS can responsibly be called universally safe based on these figures.
Power and boost alone also leave out critical variables: calibration quality, fuel, installation, engine condition, heat, load, and intended use. A car that sees sustained track sessions faces a different duty cycle from one used for occasional street driving. No single number in these product pages resolves those differences.

Calibration and installation are part of the power setup
For its KT007 kit, HKS’s October 2024 installation manual says installation must be performed by a professional. It says the engine-management device and engine plug are not included and that fuel and ignition must be reset to avoid engine damage. A boost controller is needed if boost is changed; the supplied actuator is set to approximately 60–70 kPa. HKS recommends high-temperature oil viscosity 30 or 40, estimates about 16 hours of work, and calls for vehicle modifications including changes to the radiator support, reinforcement, fan shroud, oil pan, and oil-return pipe. It also advises periodic spark-plug checks and specifies HKS Super Fire Racing M50HL (50003-M50HL) or an NGK No. 10 equivalent. Verify details against the exact kit revision and vehicle. HKS’s manual also states: “HKS is not responsible for the damage to the engine and/or other parts of a vehicle after installing this product.” That is the manufacturer’s disclaimer, not an independent finding about reliability. The practical point is to treat installation and calibration as essential parts of the system, rather than assuming a bolt-on kit’s peak figure is a complete or safe recipe.

Check the exact kit, transmission, and local rules
HKS lists 11001-KT007 for overseas markets and 11001-AT011 for a separate market/application. Its catalog says the exhaust-gas test certification for AT011 applies only to manual-transmission models. Neither listing establishes legality or fitment everywhere. Before buying or installing, confirm the exact part number, transmission compatibility, what calibration is included, required fuel, and current emissions rules for the jurisdiction where the car is registered. GReddy’s T620Z page lists catalyst-equipped and catalyst-free configurations and describes its Performance ECU as a separate option. It also says clutch replacement may be needed depending on clutch wear and mileage, despite the standard clutch being the design premise. A different forced-induction result is not a turbo comparison
Harrop’s April 4, 2024 guide reports 226 kW (303 hp) and 321 N·m at approximately 8 psi for a supercharger comparison using a 2023 GR86 with no other modifications, 98 RON fuel, and a stated test temperature of 20°C. Its stated naturally aspirated baseline was 160 kW (215 hp) and 236 N·m. This is a differently configured supercharger test, not a turbo-kit result or a durability rating, so it should not be combined with HKS or GReddy figures as if the tests were equivalent. How to set a responsible power target
- Identify the application. Match the kit’s exact part number to the car’s model, transmission, and market; check emissions documentation against current local requirements.
- Confirm the full calibration plan. Ask the installer what engine-management hardware and tune are included, what fuel the calibration requires, and how fuel and ignition will be set. HKS says those settings must be reset for KT007 to avoid engine damage.
- Assess the car and its use. Have a qualified tuner or installer consider vehicle condition and intended driving, including sustained high-load use, before selecting a boost and power target.
- Budget for installation and supporting work. Use the exact kit manual to identify modifications, labor, plugs, and any other required parts; do not assume “bolt-on” means a simple or uniform installation.
- Keep the target evidence-based. Treat vendor peak figures as examples of specific tests, not as a promise of engine life. Ask what evidence supports the proposed target for the exact setup and use case; the sources cited here do not establish a universal safe limit.
