Probably not. The Nokian WR G4 is an all-weather tire designed to handle year-round driving, including snow and slush—not just a conventional all-season tire. It can be a sensible one-set choice for mixed conditions, provided the tire’s size and specifications match your vehicle. If you regularly drive on severe ice or need the strongest winter traction available, a dedicated winter tire may be the better fit.
What kind of tire is the Nokian WR G4?
Nokian introduced the WR G4 as an all-weather tire: a year-round option intended to pair everyday wet- and dry-road manners with added capability in snow and slush. It carries the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake designation, which indicates it meets a defined snow-traction threshold for severe-snow service. That designation does not mean the WR G4 performs like a dedicated winter tire in every winter condition, particularly on ice.

Nokian’s 2018 launch announcement described the tire as balancing wet, dry, and winter driving. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative test results. Nokian’s WR G4 launch announcement
When is the WR G4 a reasonable choice?
- You want one set of tires for changing seasons rather than swapping to dedicated winter tires.
- Your winters bring snow or slush, but you do not routinely face severe ice or conditions where maximum winter traction is essential.
- The tire is available in the correct size and meets your vehicle’s required load and speed specifications.
- The price and warranty terms make sense compared with the alternatives available in your exact fitment.
Those are decision criteria, not a guarantee of performance on a particular vehicle or road. When might it be the wrong compromise?
- You regularly drive on ice or in severe winter conditions. The WR G4’s snow designation does not establish that it matches a dedicated winter tire on ice.
- You need a tire built around one season’s priorities. An all-weather tire is designed to balance year-round use; that compromise may not suit drivers seeking maximum winter traction or a summer-focused setup.
- The fitment is wrong. A tire’s model name alone does not confirm that it is approved for your vehicle.
Check that the tires fit your vehicle
Before judging the purchase, compare the tire specifications with the driver-door placard or owner’s manual. Check the tire size, load index, and speed rating; do not assume that a WR G4 listing in another size is suitable for your car. Retailer listings show that fitments vary by size. Nokian’s August 2022 WR G4 SUV information sheet lists a 60,000-mile limited treadwear warranty for SUV sizes. That figure is specific to the SUV tire and subject to the applicable size and warranty terms; it should not be treated as a blanket warranty for every passenger-car WR G4. Nokian’s North American site currently presents the Remedy WRG5 as an all-weather model. That is useful product-line context, but it does not establish that every WR G4 size is discontinued or unavailable. Check your exact size and market rather than assuming either. Nokian’s Remedy product page
Verdict: was buying the WR G4 dumb?
No—not based on the model name alone. If you wanted a year-round tire for mixed wet, dry, snowy, and slushy conditions, and the fitment is right, the WR G4 is a defensible choice. If your routine includes severe ice or you expect dedicated-winter-tire traction, it may be the wrong compromise. Your climate, roads, driving habits, exact vehicle specifications, and price determine which answer applies to you.
