Google Maps’ speedometer finally reached iPhone and Apple CarPlay in July 2024, several years after Google introduced the feature on Android. The update adds a live estimated-speed display and, where supported, a speed-limit indicator to the existing Google Maps navigation experience.
Google Maps’ speedometer arrived on iPhone and Apple CarPlay in July 2024, years after Android users received the feature. The update added two related tools: a live speed display and, where supported, an on-screen speed-limit indicator. The rollout was global, but it appeared progressively, so not every iPhone account or region necessarily received the setting at the same time.

That makes this less a brand-new navigation feature than the closing of a long-standing platform gap. Google introduced the speedometer and speed-limit tools on Android in 2019; the July 2024 update extended the experience to Google Maps on iOS and CarPlay.

What Google Maps added to iPhone and CarPlay
When navigation is active, Google Maps can show an estimate of the vehicle’s current speed near the lower-left area of the navigation screen. On iPhone, that display appears in the Maps interface. When Google Maps is being used through a compatible Apple CarPlay system, the speed information can appear on the vehicle’s dashboard display as part of the Google Maps navigation experience.

The app can also show the applicable speed limit where Google’s Speed Limits feature is available. If Maps determines that the vehicle is traveling above the displayed limit, the speed indicator may change color as a visual reminder to slow down. It is an awareness aid—not a guaranteed speeding alarm—and the behavior and coverage can vary by location.
The speed display can use miles or kilometers, depending on the region and the units selected for Maps.
How to turn on the Google Maps speedometer on an iPhone

- Tap your profile picture or initial in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Navigation.
- Under Map display, turn on Show speedometer.
After enabling it, start navigation and look for the speed display on the map. The speed-limit indicator is not a separate universal switch that guarantees coverage everywhere. Google says it is available only in locations where the Speed Limits feature is supported.
Why the speedometer may not appear
If you do not see Show speedometer, that does not necessarily mean your iPhone is incompatible. Google’s iOS rollout was progressive, and feature availability can differ by account, region, or server-side rollout status. During the original launch, users reported seeing the setting at different times even when they had similar iPhones and app versions. Those reports are useful troubleshooting clues, but they are not a promise that a particular account will receive the feature on a specific date.

Work through these checks:
- Update Google Maps through the App Store.
- Confirm that you are looking under Settings > Navigation > Map display, rather than the general iPhone Settings app.
- Close and reopen Maps, then check the setting again.
- Test during active turn-by-turn navigation, since the speed display is intended for the navigation view.
- Allow time for a staggered account or regional rollout if the option is still absent.
There is no setting that can force speed-limit coverage in a country or road where Google does not provide the feature.
Using Google Maps speedometer with Apple CarPlay
CarPlay does not require a separate version of Google Maps. You install Google Maps on the iPhone, connect that iPhone to a compatible CarPlay vehicle, open Google Maps on the vehicle’s screen, and begin navigation. The 2024 update brought the speed-awareness display into that existing iPhone-and-CarPlay workflow.

- An iPhone 5 or newer
- iOS 12 or newer
- Google Maps version 5.24 or newer
- A vehicle or aftermarket system that supports Apple CarPlay
Those software requirements do not make every vehicle CarPlay-compatible. The car’s infotainment system must support CarPlay, and the exact connection method depends on the vehicle.
Wired and wireless CarPlay
Some vehicles connect through a USB port, while others support wireless CarPlay. For wired setup, Apple recommends using an Apple USB cable. Match the cable connector to both the iPhone and the vehicle’s USB port; a cable that charges a phone is not automatically reliable for data-based CarPlay connection.

If your vehicle already supports wired CarPlay, a wireless CarPlay adapter may be a convenient way to avoid plugging in every trip. Compatibility is vehicle- and adapter-dependent, however. An adapter does not add CarPlay to a vehicle that lacks CarPlay support entirely, and it should not be treated as a requirement for the Google Maps speedometer.
If the car has no compatible CarPlay system, the alternatives are using Maps directly on the iPhone or researching an appropriate aftermarket CarPlay receiver. A receiver requires vehicle-specific fitment and may involve installation, steering-wheel-control integration, backup-camera compatibility, and other considerations beyond Google Maps.
Is Google Maps’ speed reading accurate?
Google explicitly describes the Maps speedometer as being for informational use only. External conditions can cause the displayed speed to differ from the vehicle’s actual speed or from the dashboard’s reading. Google therefore tells drivers to use the vehicle’s own speedometer to confirm speed.
Do not use the Maps display as a certified replacement for the dashboard speedometer, a legally authoritative measurement, or a guaranteed speed-enforcement warning. If the two readings differ, treat the vehicle’s speedometer as the primary reference and follow local traffic laws.
The same caution applies to the speed-limit indicator. It can be useful for awareness, but map data may be incomplete, delayed, or unavailable for a particular road. Temporary limits, construction zones, variable signs, private roads, and recently changed limits may not be reflected immediately. The driver remains responsible for observing roadside signs and local regulations.

What the update does—and does not—do

iPhone screen versus the vehicle display
Drivers who do not use CarPlay can run Google Maps directly on the iPhone. In that case, mount the phone where it can be seen without obstructing the road, airbags, or controls. Configure the route and settings before moving; do not handle the phone while driving. An iPhone car mount can help position the display, but it is optional and does not improve the speed reading.
CarPlay is generally the cleaner arrangement when the vehicle supports it because the navigation interface appears on the built-in display and can be used with the car’s controls. It still does not turn the Google Maps speedometer into a replacement for the dashboard instrument.
Do not confuse this with Android Auto
The July 2024 announcement concerned Google Maps on iPhone and Apple CarPlay. It was not an Android Auto launch. Google Maps had already offered the speedometer on Android phones since 2019, while a separate Android Auto speedometer rollout began gradually in 2026. These are distinct platform developments.
