Google Maps on iPhone and Apple CarPlay gained a live speedometer and speed-limit display in July 2024. The feature is helpful, but Google says it is informational only—your vehicle’s gauges and roadside signs still take priority.
Google Maps added a live speedometer and speed-limit display to its iPhone app and Apple CarPlay interface in a global rollout reported in July 2024. It was a meaningful catch-up feature for drivers who use Google Maps on an iPhone: the app can now show your reported speed alongside the posted limit where Maps has that information.
It is useful at a glance, but it is not a replacement for the car’s instruments or for roadside signs. Google describes the speedometer as informational only and warns that outside factors can cause it to differ from the vehicle’s actual speed. Keep your attention on the road, use the vehicle’s instrument cluster to confirm your speed, and treat posted signs as the controlling reference.
What the Google Maps display adds
During driving navigation, Google Maps can provide two related pieces of information:
#1 Best Overall
- SUPER NIGHT VISION AND PARKING MONITOR - The combination of F1.8 large aperture, WDR, HDR ensures the clarity of images at night. Eliminates the need for an auxiliary light source even in low-light environments, making it easy to obtain sharp, color-accurate images. With the parking monitor feature, the dash camera will automatically turn on and record when the car camera detects vibration 24/7.
- FULL HD RECORDING - Premium mage sensor captures beautiful Full HD 1080p video @ 30fps. WIDE DYNAMIC RANGE allows the camera to perform optimally in any lighting situation by adjusting the exposure to create balanced images and footage.
- 170° SUPER WIDE ANGLE - This car driving recorder employs a 170° super wide-angle lens. Ultra-wide field of view reduces the blind spots and captures more details, to reserve the real scene.
- ACCIDENT AUTO-DETECTION (G-SENSOR) - With a built-in G-sensor, the Rexing dashboard camera can automatically detect a sudden shake/collision and lock the footage to prevent the video from being overwritten even in loop recording. An accident scene can be truly restored.
- DISCREET DESIGN - Signature low-profile design allows the V1 Basic to be a well-hidden witness to the road ahead.
- Live speed: an on-screen estimate of the vehicle’s current speed.
- Speed-limit information: the limit Maps has for the current road or location, when that data is available.
The important word is “when.” A worldwide rollout does not mean every road, country, city, route, account, or CarPlay screen will always have speed-limit data. Maps features and underlying road data vary by location, and a blank or absent limit should never be interpreted as permission to drive at any particular speed.
How to use it on an iPhone
- Update Google Maps from the App Store.
- Open Google Maps and tap your profile picture or initial.
- Open Settings, then Navigation.
- Look under Map display for Show speedometer and turn it on if the option is present.
- Start driving navigation and look for the speed readout and, where available, the speed limit.
This settings path was reported when the feature rolled out and labels can change with app updates. If you do not see the toggle, first update Google Maps, then review the Navigation settings rather than assuming a missing switch definitively means the feature is unsupported in your area.
Using Google Maps in Apple CarPlay
You need an iPhone with Google Maps installed and a vehicle or aftermarket head unit that supports Apple CarPlay. Google’s longstanding CarPlay requirements list an iPhone 5 or later, iOS 12 or later, Google Maps 5.24 or later, and a CarPlay-compatible vehicle. Those are baseline requirements for using Google Maps with CarPlay; they are not a guarantee that every current Maps feature will appear on every older iPhone, vehicle display, or software combination.
Connect the iPhone using the method your vehicle supports:
Recommended Free Tools
- Wired CarPlay: plug the iPhone into the vehicle’s CarPlay-capable USB port with an appropriate Apple USB cable, then select Google Maps from the CarPlay home screen.
- Wireless CarPlay: follow the vehicle maker’s Bluetooth/Wi-Fi pairing instructions, then open Google Maps from the CarPlay home screen.
A cable is useful only for a vehicle that already supports wired CarPlay. It does not enable the Maps speedometer, make speed-limit data more complete, or turn a non-CarPlay vehicle into a CarPlay vehicle. Likewise, a wireless-CarPlay adapter is not a universal remedy: adapters commonly require factory-installed wired CarPlay and do not add missing Google Maps features.

Read the display safely
Think of Google Maps’ speed readout as navigation context, not a calibrated measuring instrument. GPS accuracy, signal conditions, device behavior, and other outside factors can affect the number shown. The car’s speedometer and the road signs remain the reference points while driving.
- Do not use the Maps number as proof that you are within the legal limit.
- Do not rely on a displayed limit if it conflicts with a temporary, variable, school-zone, construction-zone, weather-related, lane-specific, or newly changed roadside sign.
- Do not keep checking the screen. Set up navigation before moving and use brief glances only when it is safe.
Why it may not appear
If the speedometer or limit display is missing, work through the likely causes in this order:
- Confirm you are navigating. Start a driving route; some navigation information is not shown in the same way while simply browsing the map.
- Update the app. Install the latest Google Maps version available for your iPhone.
- Check Navigation settings. Look for the speedometer control under Map display; wording and placement may change over time.
- Check the connection. Make sure the vehicle is running a genuine CarPlay session and that Google Maps, rather than a native vehicle navigation app or Apple Maps, is open.
- Allow for local coverage. Speed-limit information is location-dependent. An unavailable limit on one road does not necessarily indicate a phone, cable, or CarPlay fault.
Do not confuse these systems
This feature belongs to the Google Maps app running on an iPhone and, when connected, its Apple CarPlay interface. It is separate from Google Maps built into a vehicle’s native infotainment system, Android Auto, Apple Maps, an instrument-cluster speed display, and any dashboard speedometer. Updating or changing one of those systems does not necessarily change what Google Maps shows in iPhone CarPlay.
Is it worth using?
Yes—as a supplementary cue for drivers who already navigate with Google Maps on an iPhone. Seeing an estimated speed and location-dependent limit in the same navigation view can be convenient, especially on unfamiliar roads. The value is convenience, not enforcement or legal certainty. If the display is absent, inconsistent, or disagrees with the car or the road, follow the vehicle instruments and signs.

Does Google Maps show the speed limit on every road?
No. Speed-limit information is dependent on availability in a location. A missing or incorrect-looking display is not a legal-speed indication; follow posted signs, including temporary and variable limits.
Why do I not see the speedometer option on my iPhone?
Not necessarily. Update Google Maps, start driving navigation, and check Settings > Navigation for the speedometer control. Availability can also depend on location and rollout or app-interface changes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Will a new USB cable enable the speedometer in CarPlay?
No. A cable only connects an iPhone to a car that already supports wired CarPlay. It does not unlock the Google Maps feature or add CarPlay to an unsupported vehicle.
The Bottom Line
Google Maps’ iPhone and CarPlay speedometer is a helpful navigation aid introduced in 2024, not a substitute for your dashboard or roadside speed-limit signs. Update Maps, enable the setting if it appears, and expect speed-limit data to vary by location.
