Yes—Google Gemini is available in Android Auto. However, it is not a separate “Gemini for Android Auto” app that anyone can download to force access. Google began rolling Gemini out to eligible Android Auto users on November 20, 2025, and availability still depends on the connected phone, Google account, language, country, vehicle and server-side rollout.
For most drivers, the setup is to install or update the Gemini mobile app, select Gemini as the phone’s digital assistant, update Google’s relevant software, and connect the phone to a compatible Android Auto car or stereo. If Android Auto still shows Google Assistant, the account may not have received the change yet.

What Gemini in Android Auto actually is
Gemini in Android Auto is the voice assistant projected from an eligible Android phone to the vehicle’s display and speakers. It retains familiar hands-free functions such as navigation, calling, messaging and media control, but Google is positioning it as a more conversational assistant that can handle follow-up questions and less rigid requests.

Do not confuse these Google products
- Gemini in Android Auto: Gemini runs through a compatible phone connected to Android Auto.
- Gemini mobile app: The Android app used to set up Gemini as the phone’s assistant.
- Gemini Live: A continuous, back-and-forth voice conversation mode. Google described its Android Auto availability as beta in its launch material.
- Gemini Intelligence: A broader 2026 initiative involving more contextual and proactive actions across Android devices and cars. It is not the same thing as the basic Android Auto assistant rollout.
- Cars with Google built-in: Vehicles running Google services natively. They are not the same as cars using phone-projected Android Auto.
What Gemini can do in Android Auto
Navigation and finding places
Gemini can combine ordinary voice navigation with more natural local-search requests. Google says it can find places along a route, use Google Maps review information, recommend stops and navigate to a selected location.
For example, a driver might say:
“Find a barbecue restaurant along my route that is open now.”
“Which one has the best reviews for ribs?”
“Navigate there and add it as a stop.”
Follow-up questions can include whether a place is open, dog-friendly or known for a particular dish. Results and actions can vary by location, language, account and the information available in Google Maps, so check the vehicle display and do not treat an AI answer as confirmation of changing business hours.
Calls, texts and message editing
Gemini can place calls and help compose or refine messages without requiring the driver to start over. Google’s examples include adding an apology, adding an estimated arrival time and translating a message into Spanish. It can also summarize incoming messages.
Useful examples include:
- “Text Alex that I’m stuck in traffic and include my ETA.”
- “Add that I’ll be there in 20 minutes.”
- “Translate it into Spanish.”
- “Summarize my unread messages.”
Google says message translation supports more than 40 languages, but exact language support, wake-word activation and available actions are not identical across languages. Review a consequential message before sending it whenever the system offers a confirmation step.
Gmail, Calendar, Tasks, Keep and Samsung services
Google advertises Gmail access in Android Auto, including finding an address in a booking email or summarizing unread mail. Its Android Auto announcement also lists integrations with:
- Google Calendar
- Google Tasks
- Google Keep
- Samsung Calendar
- Samsung Reminder
- Samsung Notes
These integrations may let Gemini retrieve or summarize information, but reading information is not the same as performing a consequential action. Access to Gmail or another connected service depends on the account, permissions and supported language. Google says additional third-party integrations may be added over time.

Music and media
Gemini can start, stop or change media and accept broader requests based on mood, activity or audience. You could ask for an upbeat three-hour road-trip playlist suitable for adults and children instead of naming a precise song or genre.
Google identifies services including YouTube Music and Spotify, subject to the apps installed on the phone and the account setup available there. Gemini does not provide paid music access by itself: playback still depends on the service, subscription, region and its own restrictions.
Gemini Live
Gemini Live supports a continuous conversation, so you can ask follow-up questions without repeating the wake phrase. Google presents uses such as learning about a destination, brainstorming or rehearsing a speech or presentation.
Gemini Live is not a substitute for a reliable source of urgent or safety-critical information. Do not depend on it for emergency directions, hazardous-weather decisions, medical or legal guidance, or diagnosing a vehicle problem while driving.

For eligible users, Gemini is Google’s intended replacement for the classic Google Assistant experience on Android Auto. Google’s Android Auto support documentation says the transition is continuing during 2026.
That does not mean every phone, account and vehicle changes on the same day. Some drivers may still see Google Assistant because:
- Gemini has not reached their account or device;
- the phone is not using Gemini as its selected digital assistant;
- the country or language has limited support;
- a work or school account is restricted;
- a particular Assistant command or integration has not carried over identically.
Gemini preserves many familiar assistant functions, but commands, third-party integrations and language-specific features can behave differently. A phone can be set to Gemini while Android Auto continues showing Assistant until Google completes the server-side transition.

Google’s Gemini in-car help page lists these requirements for Gemini in a car:

- Android 11 or newer;
- at least 2 GB of RAM;
- Gemini selected as the phone’s digital assistant;
- a vehicle that supports Android Auto.
General Android Auto requirements can be less demanding in some connection scenarios. Google’s Android Auto product information lists Android 9 or newer for most wired connections, while Android 11 or newer is required for wireless Android Auto and selected newer vehicles. For Gemini specifically, use the stricter Android 11 and 2 GB requirements.
Car or stereo requirements
Your vehicle or aftermarket receiver must support Android Auto. Bluetooth alone is not enough. Google says Android Auto works with more than 500 vehicle and stereo models, but compatibility is determined by the manufacturer and the particular head unit.
Your car may support:
- wired Android Auto only;
- wireless Android Auto;
- Android Auto through an aftermarket receiver;
- Google built-in rather than phone-projected Android Auto.
For wired use, a suitable, reliable USB cable is also required. A new cable or stereo cannot solve an account-level Gemini rollout delay.
Country and language
Google’s partner availability information says Gemini in Android Auto is limited to countries where Android Auto itself is available. The listed markets include the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, India, Japan, South Korea and numerous European and Latin American countries. Check the current country list if you are unsure.

Check both the language selected in the Gemini app and the Google Assistant or Android Auto language. A language can be listed as supported while particular actions, wake-word activation or third-party integrations remain limited.

How to download and enable Gemini
What you need to install
Install or update the official Google Gemini app on Google Play. There is no clearly separate “Gemini for Android Auto” download that guarantees access.
You can also check the Android Auto Google Play listing, although phones running Android 10 or newer generally do not require users to launch a separate Android Auto app. Android Auto components can still receive updates through Google Play and system software.

Setup steps
- Open Google Play Store and install or update Gemini.
- Open Gemini and complete its setup.
- Choose Gemini as the phone’s primary or digital assistant when prompted. If necessary, review your phone’s default digital-assistant setting.
- Install available updates for Gemini, the Google app, Google Play services and Android Auto-related components.
- Connect the phone to the compatible car, either by USB or wirelessly if both devices support wireless Android Auto.
- Watch for Google’s Gemini introduction tooltip on the vehicle display.
- Start Gemini by saying “Hey Google,” tapping Android Auto’s microphone button, or long-pressing the steering-wheel voice button.
There is no single publicly documented Android Auto app version that unlocks Gemini for every user. The phone app and software updates are necessary preparation, but eligibility is still controlled by Google’s rollout.
Why Gemini may not appear
If Android Auto continues to show Google Assistant, work through this order:
- Confirm that the phone runs Android 11 or newer and has at least 2 GB of RAM.
- Confirm that Gemini—not Google Assistant—is selected as the phone’s digital assistant.
- Check that Gemini is available for your country, account and selected language.
- Update Gemini, the Google app, Google Play services and Android Auto-related components.
- Disconnect and reconnect Android Auto.
- Restart both the phone and the vehicle’s head unit.
- If supported, test both wired and wireless Android Auto.
- Check whether the phone is using a work, school or otherwise managed Google account.
- If allowed, test with a personal Google account.
Google’s official material does not provide a universal manual switch to force the rollout. Clearing a cache, changing regions, using a VPN or sideloading a newer APK may be reported as user workarounds, but none is a verified substitute for server-side eligibility. Sideloading can also introduce security and compatibility risks.

Google’s Android Auto setup instructions do not identify a paid Google AI subscription as a requirement for the core assistant experience. That means you should not buy Google AI Pro or another premium plan merely to make basic Gemini voice assistance appear in Android Auto.
Premium plans may provide separate Gemini features or higher limits, but the supplied Google documentation does not establish that every premium capability works in Android Auto or that a subscription is needed for every connected-service action. Availability remains feature-, account-, language- and region-dependent.

Privacy, safety and limitations
Gemini may access connected services such as messages, Gmail, Calendar, Tasks or Keep when those capabilities are authorized. Review Gemini’s permissions and connected-app settings before enabling access, particularly if another person regularly drives or rides in the vehicle.
- Do not dictate passwords, financial details or other sensitive information aloud in a crowded vehicle.
- Keep your attention on the road and use the hands-free controls.
- Verify addresses, opening hours, arrival times and other consequential details.
- Do not use Gemini as the sole authority for emergency, medical, legal, mechanical or severe-weather decisions.
- Remember that Gemini can misunderstand requests or generate incorrect information.
- Explain to children that Gemini is an AI tool, not a person, as Google notes in its in-car guidance.
Conversational capability is useful, but it can also encourage longer exchanges. If a request requires sustained discussion, pull over safely rather than continuing to engage while driving.

Google says Gemini in cars with Google built-in can support deeper vehicle-specific questions, such as identifying a dashboard warning light or judging whether an item will fit in the trunk. Those capabilities should not be assumed to exist in standard phone-projected Android Auto.

Rollout timeline
- November 20, 2025: Google announced the beginning of a global Android Auto Gemini rollout in 45 languages for users who had upgraded their phone assistant from Google Assistant to Gemini. See Google’s announcement.
- May 12, 2026: Google described Gemini as widely available in Android Auto and previewed broader Gemini Intelligence capabilities for cars later in 2026. See the Android in cars update.
- August 2026: Google’s current support and product pages continued to make eligibility dependent on compatible devices, countries, languages and rollout status.
The original 45-language figure describes the launch announcement, not necessarily the permanent current language total. Google’s later language information is broader but includes limitations for wake words and actions.
The bottom line for drivers
Gemini is a real Android Auto feature, and it is most useful for drivers who want natural-language requests that combine navigation, local recommendations, messages, email, calendar information and media control. The main hurdle is not finding a special APK; it is meeting Google’s requirements and waiting for the account-level rollout.
If your phone runs Android 11 or newer, has at least 2 GB of RAM, Gemini is selected as its assistant, and your car supports Android Auto, install the official Gemini app and update Google’s components. If Assistant remains on the car display afterward, check country, language and account eligibility—but do not assume that a new stereo, VPN or sideloaded APK will force Google to enable it.
