1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor certain 2021–2024 GM vehicles with the L87 6.2-liter V8 that received the oil-based recall remedy, the specified oil grade is dexosR SAE 0W-40. Later GM guidance names Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 dexosR for oil changes after the initial recall service. The product recommendation changed; the cited documents do not show another change in viscosity grade.
This is not a blanket recommendation for every GM 6.2-liter engine. Check your VIN, recall service record and oil-fill-cap label before buying oil or changing what you use.
What oil does GM now recommend after the L87 recall?
GM’s recall insert says: “For future engine oil changes, use dexosR SAE 0W-40.” In later guidance, GM identifies Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 dexosR for maintenance after the initial L87 field-action service and for customer-pay oil changes. GM Bulletin 25-NA-339, November 2025 names the product; the recall service documentation specifies the oil grade.
What changed—and what did not?
The later bulletin names Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 dexosR. Mobil 1 Supercar 0W-40 was identified as a temporary substitute when FS was unavailable during the supply ramp-up. In both cases, the cited grade is SAE 0W-40; the documents support a change in named product guidance, not a further viscosity change.
#1 Best Overall
- Protects for 15,000 miles – guaranteed**
- Has excellent low temperature capabilities for rapid engine protection at start-up
- Delivers fast protection for reduced engine wear and deposits
- Formulated for European vehicles
The bulletin also described a temporary $50 credit for qualifying customer-pay oil changes during that supply period. That was tied to the temporary supply situation, not stated as an ongoing reimbursement offer.
| Guidance | Named oil | Grade | Context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recall oil remedy | dexosR; the recall insert does not name a specific retail product | SAE 0W-40 | Future changes after the qualifying vehicle receives the oil-based remedy |
| Later maintenance guidance | Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 dexosR | 0W-40 | Oil changes after initial L87 field-action service and customer-pay maintenance |
| Temporary supply workaround | Mobil 1 Supercar 0W-40 | 0W-40 | Temporary substitute when FS was unavailable during supply ramp-up |
The documents do not provide comparative performance testing or establish that any oil labeled 0W-40 is interchangeable. Follow the oil specification and product guidance applicable to your vehicle and completed service.

Which vehicles may be covered?
The recall filing covers certain 2021–2024 model-year Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban and Tahoe, and GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles equipped with the L87 6.2-liter V8. Model year, model name or engine displacement alone does not confirm that a particular vehicle is included or determine which remedy it received. See the GM Safety Recall N252494000 / 25V-274 filing and check your VIN using GM Recall Updates.
Why the recall outcome matters
The remedy is inspection-dependent. Under the recall procedure, an engine that qualifies for the oil remedy receives 0W-40, an updated oil-fill cap and an owner-manual insert. An engine that fails the specified inspection may require replacement instead. Do not assume the oil remedy applies simply because your vehicle has an L87 engine; confirm the work recorded for your VIN.

How to verify the right oil for your vehicle
- Look up the VIN: Use GM Recall Updates to check whether a recall action applies and its status.
- Check the service record: Confirm with the dealer or service paperwork whether the vehicle received the oil remedy or an engine replacement, and whether the field action is complete.
- Read the oil-fill cap: The oil-based recall remedy includes an updated cap. Follow the cap and vehicle-specific service guidance.
- If the completed remedy calls for 0W-40: GM’s later bulletin names Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 dexosR for subsequent maintenance.
Buying the recommended oil is routine maintenance, not a substitute for having the recall inspection or remedy completed.
