No: GM’s new V8 announcements are not a “middle finger” to diesel, and Toyota’s cited announcement did not call diesel outdated or predict its demise. GM announced new gasoline V8s for light-duty pickups while retaining a light-duty diesel option, and separately announced a new diesel V8 for heavy-duty trucks. Toyota New Zealand, meanwhile, replaced one Land Cruiser 70 V8 with a smaller four-cylinder diesel. These are different engines, markets and truck classes—not evidence of a simple gasoline-versus-diesel reversal.
What GM actually announced
In September 2026, General Motors announced two distinct engine updates for its next-generation pickup range. The gasoline small-block V8s are for light-duty 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks. A separate, larger diesel V8 is intended for the heavy-duty Silverado HD and Sierra HD. Treating them as one engine strategy obscures the central point: GM is adding or offering different powertrains for different truck classes, not replacing diesel across its lineup.
Gasoline V8s for Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500
GM rates its Gen-6 5.7L L76 at 402 hp and 428 lb-ft of torque. Its published maximum tow ratings are 13,700 pounds for Silverado and 13,500 pounds for Sierra. The 6.6L L78 is rated at 481 hp and 501 lb-ft, with published maximum towing of 9,700 pounds for Silverado and 9,400 pounds for Sierra. These are GM’s figures for the announced 2027 light-duty trucks; towing and payload depend on configuration, trim and available packages. GM’s announcement says all engines in this lineup pair with a 10-speed automatic.

The 3.0L Duramax row matters: GM says this diesel remains available in the same next-generation light-duty lineup as the new gasoline V8s. The published maximums are not a guarantee for every truck; buyers need to check the rating for the specific configuration they are considering.

A separate diesel V8 for heavy-duty trucks
On September 24, 2026, GM announced an available 8.3L Duramax turbo-diesel V8 for the 2027 Silverado HD and Sierra HD. GM rates it at 555 hp and 1,230 lb-ft. Properly equipped trucks can offer up to 38,000 pounds of maximum gooseneck trailering, according to the company. GM describes the engine as its first clean-sheet, in-house-designed heavy-duty diesel V8. Its announcement expected the trucks to begin reaching U.S. dealers in late 2026; MSRP and further product information were still to come at the time. GM’s heavy-duty announcement also says that more than 60 percent of heavy-duty customers choose diesel. That is GM’s company-published statement, not an independently established market-wide statistic.
What Toyota changed—and what it did not say
Toyota New Zealand’s June 9, 2025 announcement was about the Land Cruiser 70 range in that market. Toyota said the range would be simplified to four models, all powered by the 1GD 2.8L four-cylinder turbo-diesel with an automatic transmission. Orders for the previous 4.5L V8 and manual transmission had closed. The replacement powertrain is diesel, so the announcement does not establish that Toyota was abandoning diesel.

Toyota reported 150 kW and 500 Nm for the 1GD, compared with 151 kW and 430 Nm for the former V8. It also reported combined exhaust emissions of 279 g/km for the 1GD and 316 g/km for the V8. These are Toyota’s figures for this New Zealand Land Cruiser 70 comparison; they should not be generalized into a claim about diesel versus gasoline engines overall. Toyota Chief Strategic Officer Andrew Davis called the V8 “a legendary powertrain” and said the company believed the four-cylinder and automatic combination offered customers a better option. Toyota New Zealand’s announcement attributes that change to the regional model range, not to a declaration that diesel is outdated.
Did Toyota say diesel has about a decade left?
The claim that Toyota called diesel outdated, or that a Toyota executive gave diesel roughly a decade before its end, is not verified by the cited Toyota announcement. The available headline context refers to an unnamed executive, without a verifiable name or quotation. Without an original, attributable source, that forecast should not be presented as Toyota policy or as an established expiration date for diesel.

What these announcements mean for truck buyers
The announcements show manufacturers offering multiple powertrains for different needs; they do not settle the future of diesel in passenger vehicles or the wider market. For a light-duty pickup, compare the exact truck configuration’s towing and payload ratings, engine output, intended use and availability. The announced ratings alone do not establish fuel economy, purchase cost, long-term durability or real-world performance. For heavy-duty towing, the new diesel V8’s headline maximum applies only to properly equipped trucks, so the specific vehicle’s rating and equipment matter more than the engine headline.
In the Toyota example, the meaningful comparison is narrower: one New Zealand Land Cruiser 70 V8 option gave way to a smaller diesel four-cylinder with an automatic transmission. Toyota’s published output, torque and emissions figures describe that model-specific change. They do not prove a general industry trend toward diesel’s disappearance—or its permanence.
