GM’s reported $632 million investment at Fort Wayne Assembly in Indiana appears to support next-generation internal-combustion pickups—but the figure comes from secondary reporting, not a matching official GM announcement located in the available sources. The project’s precise scope and timing are therefore not confirmed. Separately, GM has outlined other U.S. manufacturing and engine investments, and it continues to describe gasoline and diesel powertrains for future Silverado and Sierra trucks.
What the reported $632 million is for—and what is not confirmed
GM Authority reported a $632 million investment at GM’s Fort Wayne Assembly for next-generation internal-combustion-engine pickups. The $630 million in the headline is a rounded version of that reported amount. The figure appears in the outlet’s July 2026 weekly stock recap, rather than a project announcement from GM. GM Authority’s July 20–24 stock recap is the secondary source for the claim.
That reporting supports identifying Fort Wayne and the general purpose as next-generation ICE pickup production. It does not establish a spending schedule, added production capacity, specific truck models or a start date. Those details should not be treated as settled without confirmation from GM or another primary source.
How Fort Wayne fits with GM’s other U.S. investments
The Fort Wayne figure is distinct from GM’s broader manufacturing and engine plans. In a 2025 investor presentation, GM described a $4 billion U.S. manufacturing investment through 2027 across multiple facilities. The presentation also outlined roughly $900 million for next-generation V8 production at Tonawanda, New York. Neither figure verifies the reported Fort Wayne project.

GM’s presentation said Orion Assembly in Michigan would build internal-combustion full-size SUVs and trucks to supplement existing capacity. It also described the ICE Chevrolet Equinox at Fairfax Assembly, Kansas, alongside the Bolt EV, and the ICE Chevrolet Blazer at Spring Hill, Tennessee, alongside Cadillac products. These examples show that the broader plan spans facilities and powertrains; they do not identify Fort Wayne’s specific allocation. GM’s investor presentation on U.S. plant investments provides the company’s description.
Which engines GM says will be offered in future trucks
In a September 24, 2026 article, GM president Mark Reuss described four powertrain choices for 2027 light-duty Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks: enhanced TurboMax, a 3.0-liter Duramax Turbo-Diesel, and new 5.7L and 6.6L Gen-6 Small Block V8s. GM says they will be paired with a 10-speed automatic. These are company descriptions of its truck lineup, not details confirmed as part of the Fort Wayne investment.

For 2027 heavy-duty trucks, the same GM article describes an 8.3-liter Duramax diesel rated by the company at 555 horsepower and 1,230 lb-ft of torque, plus a 6.6-liter gasoline V8 rated at 412 horsepower and 472 lb-ft. GM says properly equipped HD trucks could offer up to 38,000 pounds of maximum gooseneck towing. The company cautions that ratings depend on vehicle configuration; these are GM claims, not independently validated test results. Reuss’s September 2026 account of GM truck powertrains includes the lineup and qualifications.
What GM’s V8 efficiency estimate means
GM’s 2025 investor presentation estimated that its next-generation V8 engines would be 4–6% more efficient than the current generation. That is the company’s estimate and comparison, not an independently measured real-world fuel-economy result. It also applies to the V8 program described at Tonawanda, not automatically to every powertrain or truck associated with the Fort Wayne report.

Does investing in combustion trucks mean GM is abandoning EVs?
No. GM president Mark Reuss wrote, “We know EVs are the end game of our industry. We’re not walking away from that.” The company’s manufacturing plans include both combustion vehicles and EVs, including the Bolt EV alongside the ICE Equinox at Fairfax. GM’s position, as stated by Reuss, is that it will continue developing EVs while offering combustion and diesel choices for truck buyers. Reuss’s article presents that position in the context of GM’s truck powertrains.

GM reported $48.0 billion in revenue and $3.9 billion in adjusted EBIT for the second quarter of 2026. Those company-reported figures describe one quarter; they do not show the expected return on the Fort Wayne project or establish that the reported investment will succeed. GM’s second-quarter 2026 results release filed with the SEC provides the company’s figures.
