GM is planning to move away from Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in future vehicles, including gasoline-powered models. That does not mean the systems have disappeared from every GM vehicle, nor that current owners will lose them. GM says existing vehicles are not being changed, and both phone-projection systems remain in gas-powered vehicles for the foreseeable future.
The transition will happen gradually, without a published model-by-model timetable. GM’s next major software architecture launches in 2028 with the Cadillac Escalade IQ, but 2028 is not a universal cutoff date for CarPlay or Android Auto.

What GM actually announced
In an interview published October 22, 2025, GM CEO Mary Barra said the company’s future gas-powered vehicles would eventually stop supporting “smartphone projection,” the term that covers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Verge reported Barra’s comments as an extension of GM’s earlier electric-vehicle strategy.

GM subsequently clarified that it is not changing existing vehicles. If your GM vehicle already supports CarPlay or Android Auto, the company says that support will continue. GM also says gas-powered vehicles will retain both systems for the foreseeable future and that the change will occur “over time, not overnight.” MacRumors reported GM’s clarification.

So the accurate description is a future phaseout across new vehicles—not an immediate removal from all cars already on the road.
What “all its cars” means—and what it does not
- Existing vehicles: No announced retroactive removal of factory-installed CarPlay or Android Auto.
- Current and near-term gas vehicles: GM says both systems remain available for the foreseeable future.
- Future vehicles: GM intends to reduce and eventually eliminate phone projection across its brands, but has not published a complete schedule by model, trim or model year.
- Electric vehicles: GM began removing the systems from portions of its EV range before extending the same direction to future gasoline vehicles.
The policy applies to both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It is not a ban on using an iPhone or Android phone: Bluetooth calling, charging, voice assistants and selected native apps may still work, depending on the vehicle.

| March 31, 2023 | GM’s plan to phase out CarPlay and Android Auto from many future EVs was reported. MacRumors. |

| 2028 | GM says the platform will debut with the Cadillac Escalade IQ. |
| After 2028 | The broader rollout remains unspecified. No universal date has been announced for ending phone projection in every GM model. |
The Escalade IQ is the first announced vehicle for the new architecture, but GM has not published a model-specific specification confirming that it will lack both CarPlay and Android Auto. It is better understood as the likely starting point for the new software strategy, not proof of a confirmed universal cutoff.

What replaces phone projection?
GM is moving toward a built-in infotainment environment using Google automotive software, GM services and vehicle-specific applications. Chevrolet describes Google built-in as providing selected access to Google Maps, Google Play apps and, on eligible vehicles, Google Assistant and Google Gemini. Chevrolet’s support page lists current availability and requirements.
Google built-in is not Android Auto. Android Auto projects a phone-based interface into the car. Google built-in runs supported services directly in the vehicle. A GM vehicle can therefore offer Google Maps or native Apple Music without supporting Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.
The native system can also connect navigation with vehicle functions, charging information, battery condition, communications and other controls. GM says its centralized platform is intended to combine propulsion, steering, braking, infotainment and safety computing, allowing coordinated over-the-air updates.

Why GM wants a unified software platform
GM presents the strategy as more than an infotainment redesign. Its stated objectives include deeper integration of vehicle controls, charging-aware navigation, continuous software updates, artificial-intelligence features and a common software stack across gasoline and electric models.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallGM claims the centralized platform can deliver up to 10 times more software-update capacity for new features, 1,000 times more bandwidth and up to 35 times more AI-computing performance. Those are GM’s figures, not independent test results. The company also says more than 4.5 million vehicles can receive over-the-air vehicle-system updates, with that number growing by about 2 million annually. See GM’s platform announcement.
There is also a business implication: GM is expanding connected services and software subscriptions. Its investor presentation reported more than 620,000 GM digital-services subscribers at the end of 2025 and $234 million in Super Cruise revenue, with almost $400 million expected in 2026. Those figures show the scale of GM’s connected-services strategy, but they do not prove that subscription revenue is the sole reason for ending phone projection. GM’s investor presentation.

Connectivity, accounts and possible subscriptions
Google built-in comes with vehicles equipped for it, but “included” does not mean every function works indefinitely without connectivity. Chevrolet says a free Google Account can be used, while some Google services, apps and vehicle features may require a data plan or an OnStar service plan after an initial connectivity period. Connected Access is free; other OnStar plans are paid. Google Maps itself does not universally require a monthly subscription, but it does require a connected data plan for data-dependent functions.
- A Google Account identifies Google services and app preferences.
- A GM account manages GM-related ownership and connected features.
- An OnStar plan controls eligible safety, remote and connectivity services.
- Your phone’s cellular plan is separate from the vehicle’s data connection.
- Apps such as Spotify or Apple Music may require their own subscriptions.
Advantages and disadvantages for drivers
| GM’s built-in approach | CarPlay and Android Auto |
|---|---|
| Can connect navigation with charging, battery data and vehicle controls | Provides a familiar interface across different vehicles |
| Works without physically projecting the phone | Uses the phone’s apps, contacts and preferences |
| Can receive vehicle-level over-the-air updates | Benefits from phone operating-system and app updates |
| May support vehicle-aware AI and native controls | Keeps more of the user experience on the phone ecosystem |
| May depend on a GM data plan or OnStar service | Still depends on a compatible phone and connection |
| App availability follows GM’s supported list, vehicle and software version | App availability follows Apple or Google’s projection platform |
The trade-off is deeper vehicle integration versus familiarity and portability. A native system may precondition an EV battery for a charging stop or expose vehicle controls that a projected phone app cannot. Conversely, drivers may prefer the interface they already know and may not want another account, data plan or app ecosystem tied to the car.
What current owners should expect
There is no announced GM program to strip CarPlay or Android Auto from existing vehicles through an ordinary software update. A software update can change features within a vehicle’s existing architecture, but it is not the same as replacing that architecture with GM’s future centralized platform.

How to shop for a GM vehicle
- Confirm the exact model year and trim, not just the brand or model name.
- Ask explicitly whether the vehicle supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, both, or neither.
- Verify whether projection is wired, wireless or unavailable.
- Ask whether the vehicle has Google built-in and which apps are supported.
- Find out what works without an OnStar data plan and how long any included connectivity period lasts.
- Check whether navigation requires an active data connection and whether offline use is available.
- Test the actual vehicle’s infotainment system rather than relying on a generic brand page.
- Get the answer in writing from the dealer or manufacturer if phone projection is a purchase requirement.
Chevrolet’s published Google-built-in list includes selected vehicles such as the 2022 Silverado, Tahoe and Suburban; 2023 Colorado; 2024 Blazer EV, Equinox EV, Silverado EV and Traverse; and 2025 Equinox. Availability varies by vehicle, trim, market and software, so the list is not a substitute for checking a specific vehicle.
What GM has not said
- There is no single date when every GM vehicle will lose CarPlay and Android Auto.
- There is no complete public list identifying the last supported model or trim.
- GM has not confirmed the Escalade IQ’s final CarPlay and Android Auto specification in the cited platform announcement.
- GM has not said that its sole reason for the change is monetizing driver data.
For buyers, the practical rule is simple: treat phone projection as a model-specific feature, not a brand-wide promise. Verify it before signing a purchase contract.

Will GM remove CarPlay and Android Auto from my current vehicle?
GM says it is not changing existing vehicles. If your vehicle already supports either system, that support is expected to continue.
Does Google built-in mean the vehicle has Android Auto?
No. Google built-in runs selected Google services in the vehicle; Android Auto projects a compatible Android phone. They are separate features.
Will every GM vehicle lose phone projection in 2028?
No such universal cutoff has been announced. GM’s centralized platform starts in 2028, while the wider transition has no complete timetable.
