Did Toyota outsell GM in the U.S. in 2025?
No. GM’s January 5, 2026 release says the company led the U.S. industry for calendar 2025. Toyota reported its own 2025 U.S. sales total and growth, but the cited releases do not provide a directly comparable GM unit total for calculating the size of the gap. The defensible comparison is that GM reported the lead while Toyota reported faster percentage growth.

Both results are manufacturer-reported national sales figures, not an independent market-wide tally. Toyota Motor North America’s release covers Toyota and Lexus reporting; its Toyota total should not be treated as a like-for-like corporate total against GM without matching the reporting scopes.

The table separates two different questions: who held the reported lead in total sales, and whose sales grew more quickly. A higher growth rate does not by itself mean a smaller or larger unit gap; that requires comparable totals for both companies.

What “hybrid momentum” does—and does not—mean
Toyota’s 1,183,248 figure refers to its “electrified” category. The release reports that umbrella total, its 17.6% year-over-year growth, and its 47.0% share of Toyota’s sales; it does not make that figure a hybrid-only count. Describing the whole total as hybrids would therefore overstate what the cited data establish.
The result does show that electrified vehicles accounted for a substantial share of Toyota’s 2025 volume. It is a useful indicator of Toyota’s powertrain mix, but it cannot on its own explain the full sales comparison or prove that electrified sales caused Toyota’s faster overall growth.

What the latest 2026 reports add
GM’s third quarter
GM reported 670,974 U.S. vehicle sales in Q3 2026, down 6% year over year. The company attributed the decline to a much smaller EV market and discontinued vehicles, while saying its highest-volume vehicles were near the prior year’s level. Those are GM’s explanations and characterization of its results. In the same release, GM North America president Duncan Aldred said: “Our business is performing very well, the launch of our next-generation full-size pickup trucks is on track, and we are making investments in new vehicles, innovative technologies, and our U.S. manufacturing footprint to drive our next phase of growth.” GM Q3 2026 sales release, October 1, 2026

Toyota’s September report
Toyota reported 201,306 U.S. sales in September 2026. That was up 8.4% by volume and 4.0% on a daily-selling-rate basis compared with September 2025. The two percentages use different comparison measures, and the report’s monthly result is not a matched year-to-date comparison with GM’s quarter. How to read the sales race
- Keep periods matched. A full-year 2025 total answers a different question from one company’s Q3 2026 result or another’s September 2026 result.
- Separate volume from growth. GM reported the 2025 lead; Toyota reported the higher percentage growth. Neither statement replaces the other.
- Keep powertrain labels precise. Toyota’s cited 2025 figure is for electrified vehicles, not a hybrid-only total.
- Watch reporting scope. These are company-reported U.S. figures, and Toyota Motor North America’s release includes Toyota and Lexus reporting. They are not an independent market-wide count.
The cited releases do not establish comparable GM and Toyota U.S. year-to-date totals through September 2026, or Toyota hybrid-only growth over that same period. A current claim about the 2026 rank or exact gap would require matched figures.
