GM has not announced a universal date for removing Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Existing vehicles will not be changed as part of the announced transition, and GM says both systems will remain in its gas-powered vehicles for the foreseeable future. However, the company is moving newer EVs—and eventually more of its portfolio—toward native vehicle software and a centralized computing platform.
The short version
- Current GM vehicles: GM says supported vehicles will not lose CarPlay or Android Auto because of this strategy.
- Gas-powered vehicles: GM says smartphone projection will remain available for the foreseeable future, with no published end date.
- Newer EVs: GM has already moved some programs away from conventional phone projection.
- 2028 and beyond: GM plans to begin deploying a centralized computing platform with the Cadillac Escalade IQ, eventually supporting both electric and gas vehicles.
That makes “GM is removing CarPlay from all future vehicles” directionally consistent with the company’s long-term software strategy, but too definite as a statement about timing. There is no confirmed product-wide cutoff for gas vehicles.
What Mary Barra said—and what GM clarified
In October 2025, GM CEO Mary Barra described a strategy that would expand the company’s integrated software platform across its portfolio. Coverage of the interview interpreted that direction as an eventual end to smartphone projection in new gas vehicles as well as EVs.
GM subsequently clarified that it was not making changes to existing vehicles. It also said Apple CarPlay and Android Auto would remain in all GM gas-powered vehicles for the “foreseeable future.” That wording is important: it is a current policy statement, not a permanent guarantee or a dated promise.

The clarification was reported alongside the original interview account by MacRumors. Neither that clarification nor GM’s own platform announcement establishes a universal gas-vehicle removal date.
GM’s CarPlay timeline
- Before October 2025: GM’s newer EV programs increasingly emphasized native infotainment and Google-built-in services rather than conventional phone projection.
- October 22, 2025: GM announced a centralized vehicle-computing platform intended for electric and gasoline vehicles.
- October 24, 2025: GM clarified that existing vehicles would not be changed and that gas vehicles would retain CarPlay and Android Auto for the foreseeable future.
- 2026: GM continued expanding native software and app capabilities, but the available announcements did not establish a universal gas-vehicle cutoff.
- 2028: GM says the centralized platform will begin with the Cadillac Escalade IQ. Broader rollout timing remains unspecified.
GM has already described the 2025 Cadillac Escalade IQ as using GM’s integrated infotainment and Google-built-in experience. But the official material reviewed for the 2028 platform announcement does not provide a complete, model-specific CarPlay specification for every future Escalade IQ configuration. It is therefore safer to call it the announced starting point for the new architecture than to state categorically that every 2028 Escalade IQ lacks CarPlay.
Which GM vehicles are affected?
Existing vehicles
GM says vehicles that already support CarPlay or Android Auto will continue to support them and will not be changed as part of the announced transition. This does not guarantee compatibility with every future phone, operating-system release, cable, or wireless adapter, and normal hardware, software, and warranty limitations still apply.

Gas-powered vehicles
GM’s current position is that CarPlay and Android Auto remain in all GM gas-powered vehicles for the foreseeable future. Buyers should still verify the exact model year, trim, market, production date, and equipment package. “Available” may mean standard on one trim and optional on another.

For example, GM’s 2025 Cadillac Escalade materials list Apple CarPlay and Android Auto availability, while its owner guide documents wired and wireless phone projection. Apple’s compatibility list is useful, but it is not a substitute for checking the vehicle’s VIN-specific equipment.
Newer EVs and future architectures
GM began moving some newer EV programs toward native infotainment before announcing the broader strategy. Future vehicles using the centralized platform may continue that direction, but GM has not published a single date covering every Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac vehicle.

CarPlay, Google built-in, and GM’s platform are different things
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto project a phone-based interface onto the vehicle display. They provide familiar access to navigation, messaging, voice assistants, music, podcasts, and other compatible apps.
Google built-in runs supported apps and services inside the vehicle’s infotainment system. A vehicle can have Google built-in without supporting Apple CarPlay, and Google built-in is not the same thing as Android Auto.
GM’s centralized computing platform is broader still. GM describes it as an electrical and computing architecture connecting propulsion, steering, braking, infotainment, safety systems, artificial intelligence, and over-the-air updates. GM says it will provide up to 10 times more software-update capacity, up to 1,000 times more bandwidth, and up to 35 times more AI performance than prior systems. Those are GM’s own comparisons, not independent test results.

Why GM wants more control over the software
GM says its native approach can provide more direct access to vehicle data and controls, better integration with EV range, charging, and energy management, a unified interface across brands, and more control over updates and the in-vehicle app ecosystem. The company also connects the architecture to vehicle-specific AI and future automated-driving functions.
Those are design goals and technical advantages claimed by GM—not proof that every native system will be better for every driver. The trade-off is greater dependence on GM’s interface, account system, connectivity, app availability, and possible subscription policies.
What drivers may gain or lose
Possible advantages
- Native access to battery state, charging, range, climate, and vehicle controls.
- Apps that work without the phone being connected.
- Vehicle software that GM can update directly over the air.
- Potentially tighter coordination between navigation, energy use, safety, and driver assistance.
Possible disadvantages
- Loss of the familiar Apple or Google interface.
- Less freedom to choose navigation, messaging, podcast, and music apps.
- Dependence on GM’s connectivity, app catalog, and account or subscription policies.
- Different software experiences when switching vehicles or brands.
- Uncertainty about update frequency and long-term support.
- Difficulty retrofitting CarPlay into a vehicle that never supported it.
Apple Music is not CarPlay
GM’s addition of a native Apple Music app illustrates the distinction. A native Apple Music app lets GM’s system host that individual service. CarPlay gives the iPhone control of a broader interface, including compatible navigation, communications, audio apps, and Siri-based controls.

Native Apple Music does not restore Apple Maps, the full CarPlay dashboard, or the complete iPhone-based experience.
What to check before buying a GM vehicle
- Confirm the exact model year and trim. Do not rely on the brand or a dealer’s generic listing.
- Check the factory specification. Review the window sticker, build sheet, owner’s manual, or the actual vehicle’s infotainment menu.
- Verify wired versus wireless support. Some vehicles may offer one, both, or different functionality by trim.
- Test native navigation. Check destination search, traffic, voice control, map updates, and route planning.
- Ask about connectivity. Find out which navigation, voice, app, and remote features require a data plan or connected-services subscription.
- Test phone independence. Determine whether the vehicle remains useful when your phone is unavailable or has no signal.
- Ask about software support. Find out how updates are delivered and which services are expected to remain available.
- Consider household and resale needs. A system comfortable for one phone ecosystem may be less familiar to another driver or future buyer.
For a used vehicle, verify the VIN-specific equipment and demonstrate phone projection yourself. Dealer listings can be stale, and equipment can vary by market and production date.
Can you retrofit CarPlay?
A wireless CarPlay adapter generally converts an existing wired CarPlay connection into a wireless one. It normally cannot create factory CarPlay in a vehicle whose infotainment system never supported it. The same principle applies to Android Auto adapters.
An aftermarket head unit may be possible in some older GM vehicles with replaceable stereos. On newer vehicles, infotainment can be integrated with cameras, climate controls, vehicle settings, steering-wheel controls, safety alerts, and other systems. Replacing it may be expensive, incomplete, or impractical. Any retrofit should be evaluated by VIN, model year, trim, and the exact factory system.
Bluetooth remains useful for calls and audio, but it is not a full replacement for phone projection: it generally does not provide the same on-screen maps, messaging interface, app controls, or voice-assistant integration.
Bottom line for shoppers
If CarPlay or Android Auto is essential, verify it on the exact vehicle before signing. Current owners do not need to expect an announced transition update to remove the feature, and gas-powered GM buyers still have GM’s “foreseeable future” commitment. But shoppers should treat GM’s long-term direction as a warning that future EVs—and eventually some gas vehicles—may prioritize native GM software over conventional smartphone projection.
