The best Apple CarPlay app depends on what you do behind the wheel. Apple Maps is the best default navigation choice for most iPhone owners, Waze is better for community-reported traffic and hazards, and Google Maps is the strongest option for finding businesses and places. For audio, Apple Music and Spotify are the leading all-purpose choices; Overcast is a standout podcast app; Audible leads for dedicated audiobook listeners; and PlugShare is the best starting point for EV charger discovery.
CarPlay is not an unrestricted mirror of your iPhone. Apple supports selected driving-focused categories—including navigation, music, podcasts, audiobooks, messaging, calling, EV charging, parking and some vehicle apps—with simplified controls designed for use in a car. This guide reflects the CarPlay app landscape and recommendations for 2024. Availability, features, subscriptions and regional support can change, so check the current App Store listing before downloading.
Best Apple CarPlay apps at a glance
| Category | Best app | Best for | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Default navigation | Apple Maps | iPhone and Siri integration | Place information varies by region |
| Traffic and incident alerts | Waze | Commuters and user reports | Routes can be aggressive or convoluted |
| Places and businesses | Google Maps | Business search and saved locations | Less tightly integrated with Apple’s system apps |
| Apple-focused music | Apple Music | iPhone users already in Apple’s ecosystem | Full catalog requires a subscription |
| All-in-one streaming audio | Spotify | Music, playlists, podcasts and some audiobooks | Features and catalogs vary by plan and region |
| Podcast controls | Overcast | Playback customization and downloaded episodes | Some features may be paid |
| Cross-platform podcasts | Pocket Casts | Listeners using more than one platform | Premium features and pricing can change |
| Audiobooks | Audible | Dedicated audiobook listeners | Membership and credit economics |
| Library audiobooks | Libby | Readers with a participating library card | Requires library participation |
| EV charger discovery | PlugShare | Charger locations, reviews and check-ins | User reports and availability are not guarantees |
| Charging-network control | ChargePoint | Drivers who use ChargePoint stations | Limited value outside that network |
| Live radio | TuneIn | News, sports and radio stations | Catalog and features vary by region |
| Satellite radio | SiriusXM | Subscribers wanting exclusive channels | Requires a subscription |
| Hands-free communication | Phone and Messages | Voice calls, read-aloud messages and replies | Siri and permissions affect results |
These recommendations are based on CarPlay usefulness, voice control, glanceable design, reliability, offline practicality, cost and ecosystem fit—not simply on how popular an app is on the iPhone.
How Apple CarPlay apps work
CarPlay provides a vehicle-optimized interface for selected iPhone functions. It uses the car’s display, steering-wheel controls, microphone and speakers while limiting visual interaction to driving-relevant tasks. Compatible apps are installed on the iPhone and appear in CarPlay automatically; they are not ordinary iPhone apps mirrored onto the dashboard.

You need a CarPlay-compatible vehicle or aftermarket receiver. A newer iPhone alone cannot add CarPlay to hardware that does not support it. Wired and wireless CarPlay can behave differently, and some vehicles omit CarPlay entirely. App availability and features can also vary by country, iOS version, vehicle and app version.
Apple identifies audio, navigation, messaging, voice-calling, EV-charging, parking, food-ordering and vehicle-manufacturer apps as supported CarPlay categories. See Apple’s CarPlay app support documentation and its CarPlay overview for the platform’s current requirements and examples.
Best navigation apps
Apple Maps: best default navigation app
Apple Maps is the best starting point for most iPhone owners who want minimal setup. It is built into iOS and works closely with Siri, Contacts, Calendar and Messages. You can send destinations from an iPhone or Apple Watch, ask Siri for directions, and use a clean interface designed around the vehicle screen.
Its main advantage is integration. If your destinations already live in Apple’s ecosystem and you usually navigate to known addresses, Apple Maps avoids the extra account and app management required by a third-party service.
Recommended Free Tools
The trade-off is that map detail, business information and some navigation features vary by region. Drivers who frequently search for restaurants, landmarks or local businesses may find Google Maps more useful, while commuters who prioritize community incident reports may prefer Waze.
Choose Apple Maps if: you want the simplest Apple-first navigation setup and do not need a separate community reporting network.
Google Maps: best for finding places and businesses
Google Maps is the strongest choice when navigation begins with a place rather than an address. Its business, restaurant, landmark and location search are major advantages, as are Google account synchronization, saved locations and destination history.
It is particularly useful for drivers who regularly look up unfamiliar businesses or rely on locations saved in a Google account. Offline map behavior, available routes and CarPlay features should be checked for the specific 2024 app version and region rather than assumed.
Choose Google Maps if: you care most about place search, business information and Google-saved destinations.

- Wireless CarPlay Adapter: The carplay adapter converts your wired CarPlay to a wireless connection, making it easy to use navigation, music streaming, hands-free calling and voice control functions (compatible with CarPlay only, not compatible with other systems.)
- Easy to use: Simply plug the adapter into your car's USB port and pair, no apps or updates required. After the initial pairing, your phone will automatically connect to the CarPlay adapter every time you start your vehicle(Does not work with Android phones)
- Multiple control methods: After connection, this Wireless Carplay Adapter uk also supports voice control, steering wheel, touch screen and knob operation. Make you safer while driving
- Compatible with a variety of wireless car players: CarPlay Wireless is also equipped with USB-C and USB-A ports. Whether your car interface is USB or USB-C, you can use our CarPlay Wireless Adapter. This wireless adapter is only suitable for vehicles equipped with original wired CarPlay. Only suitable for vehicles manufactured in 2016 and later
- Compact design: The wireless carplay adapter will not block any interface, and its small size ensures that it will not interfere with other devices and save space
Waze: best for live traffic and incident reports
Waze is aimed at drivers who want active traffic information and community-reported events such as crashes, hazards, road closures and police activity. Its routing can reroute aggressively when conditions change, which makes it appealing for daily commuters trying to reduce delays.
The trade-off is that Waze may send you through more complicated routes than Apple Maps or Google Maps. Report quality also depends on how active local users are, and alerts can become distracting if you interact with the app too much.
Choose Waze if: real-time traffic and user-reported hazards matter more than a minimal interface.

Apple Maps, Google Maps and Waze are not mutually exclusive. You can keep all three installed, but choose one primary navigation app for each trip. Running several apps at once can produce conflicting voice prompts and make it unclear which route is active. When multiple compatible navigation apps are in use, Apple says the CarPlay Dashboard displays the last compatible navigation app used.
For a broader comparison of the three navigation choices, see Tom’s Guide’s 2024 CarPlay coverage.
Best music, radio and live-audio apps
Apple Music: best for Apple users
Apple Music offers the most natural fit for people already using Apple devices and services. Siri voice control, playlists, library access and ecosystem integration all work together without introducing another platform. Downloaded music can also be useful when cellular coverage is unreliable.
The full catalog requires a subscription. If you already pay for another music service, switching solely to improve CarPlay may not provide enough benefit.

Spotify: best for playlists and mixed audio content
Spotify is the best all-purpose alternative for playlist-heavy listeners, cross-platform households and people who want music, podcasts and some audiobooks in one service. It has a large playlist ecosystem and is available in free and paid tiers, although restrictions depend on the content, plan and region.
Spotify is usually a better choice than changing services simply for CarPlay if it is already where your library and playlists live.

Other music and radio choices
- Amazon Music: a sensible choice for Amazon Prime or Amazon Music Unlimited subscribers.
- YouTube Music: best for people already paying for YouTube Premium or using YouTube’s music ecosystem heavily.
- Pandora: useful for lean-back stations and personalized radio.
- Deezer: worth considering for existing subscribers; offline listening depends on the plan.
- TuneIn: a strong choice for live radio, news, sports and stations.
- SiriusXM: best for subscribers who want satellite-radio channels and exclusive programming.
- iHeart: useful for U.S. broadcast radio, podcasts and live stations.
Apple’s curated CarPlay App Store collection includes Spotify, Pandora, SiriusXM, TuneIn, Deezer and other audio services. The right choice is usually the service whose subscription and downloaded library you already use.
Best podcast apps
Overcast: best for playback controls
Overcast is a podcast-focused app for listeners who want more control than a basic playback queue provides. Adjustable playback speed and silence reduction are its key differentiators, and downloading episodes in advance makes it practical for long drives or weak-signal areas. Check the 2024 App Store listing for the exact division between free and paid features.
Pocket Casts: best cross-platform alternative
Pocket Casts combines discovery, organization, filters, queues and playback controls. It is a good fit for listeners who move between platforms or want a more configurable podcast library. Premium features and pricing should be checked for the relevant market and 2024 app version.
Apple Podcasts: best for built-in simplicity
Apple Podcasts requires no additional installation and integrates naturally with Siri and the Apple ecosystem. It is the easiest choice for casual listeners who want their existing subscriptions and library available in the car. Dedicated apps such as Overcast or Pocket Casts may be preferable if advanced playback customization is important.
Castro and Downcast
Castro suits listeners who prefer a queue-based workflow, while Downcast is worth considering for users who want a highly configurable podcast client. Both are more specialized choices than Apple Podcasts.
Google Podcasts should not be included as a current recommendation: Google discontinued it in 2024 and directed podcast functionality toward YouTube Music. Apple’s CarPlay collection includes Overcast, Pocket Casts, Apple Podcasts, Castro and Downcast in relevant regional listings.

Audible: best for dedicated audiobook listeners
Audible is the leading choice for drivers who regularly listen to commercial audiobooks and already use Amazon’s audiobook service. Its membership and credit model can make sense for frequent listeners, but occasional listeners should compare the economics before subscribing. Download books before a trip if coverage may be unreliable.
Apple Books: best for Apple ecosystem users
Apple Books is convenient if you buy and manage audiobooks through Apple. It avoids adding another service and keeps purchases in the same ecosystem as your other media.
Libby: best for library borrowing
Libby lets eligible library-card holders borrow audiobooks rather than buy them. It is an excellent value where a participating library system supports it, but it does not work without a qualifying library account and available titles.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Messaging and calling apps
For most drivers, Apple’s Phone and Messages remain the best communication tools in CarPlay. Siri can announce compatible messages, read them aloud and take dictated replies. Phone provides voice calling through the car’s controls.
Supported third-party messaging apps such as WhatsApp can provide similar voice-first workflows. Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Webex and other work-communication apps may support selected calling or messaging functions, but capabilities depend on the current app, CarPlay implementation, iOS version and account setup.
CarPlay does not turn messaging into a normal visual chat interface. Notifications may need to be enabled, and Siri language, contact permissions, microphone access and Focus settings can affect results. Siri may misunderstand similar contact names, unusual punctuation, podcast titles or international place names. Prepare important messages and contacts before driving, and never manually type or browse while moving.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Best EV charging and road-trip apps
PlugShare: best for charger discovery
PlugShare is useful for finding charging locations and reviewing community comments, check-ins and user reports. It is best understood as a discovery and research tool—not a guarantee that a charger is available or working.
A charger shown in the app may be occupied, broken, inaccessible, behind a locked gate or incompatible with your vehicle. Confirm connector type, power level, access hours, payment requirements and current status before relying on it.
ChargePoint: best for ChargePoint-network users
ChargePoint is the better choice when you regularly use ChargePoint stations and want network-specific information or charging controls. It is less useful as a universal solution if most of your local charging happens on another network.
A Better Routeplanner: best for EV road trips
A Better Routeplanner is designed for longer EV journeys where battery range, vehicle efficiency, charging stops and route planning matter. It complements—not replaces—an everyday navigation app. Historical 2024 coverage reported a premium price of $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year at that time; do not treat those figures as current without checking the service directly.
EV drivers often need a combination of tools:
- Discovery: PlugShare.
- Network operation: ChargePoint or the relevant charging-network app.
- Trip planning: A Better Routeplanner.
- Navigation between stops: Apple Maps, Google Maps or Waze.
Apple lists EV-charging apps such as PlugShare and ChargePoint among its CarPlay examples. See 9to5Mac’s EV CarPlay coverage for the distinction between charger discovery, network controls and trip planning.

Parking, fuel and roadside apps
These tools are useful only when they genuinely support CarPlay in your area. SpotHero can help drivers pre-book parking in supported cities. GasBuddy may help compare fuel prices where its relevant CarPlay features are available. AAA and automaker apps can provide roadside assistance or vehicle functions where supported.
Do not assume that every parking, fuel, weather or roadside iPhone app belongs on the dashboard. Confirm CarPlay support, regional availability and the specific in-car functions before recommending or relying on an app. Fuel prices, parking availability and roadside-service data can be delayed or inaccurate.
How to install and arrange CarPlay apps
- Open the App Store on your iPhone and download a CarPlay-compatible app.
- Open the app on the iPhone, sign in and configure permissions where required.
- Connect the iPhone to the vehicle using USB or wireless CarPlay.
- The compatible app should appear automatically on the CarPlay Home screen.
- If it does not, open Settings on the iPhone and select the CarPlay settings for the connected vehicle.
- Customize the CarPlay layout and move the app into a visible position.
Location access, notifications, microphone permission, Siri and account login can all affect what the app can do. A downloaded app does not necessarily provide every feature offline.
If a CarPlay app does not appear
- Confirm that the vehicle or receiver supports CarPlay and that the iPhone is connected to the correct vehicle profile.
- Update the app and iPhone.
- Open and sign into the app on the iPhone.
- Check whether the app supports CarPlay in your country or region.
- Make sure Siri is enabled and Screen Time restrictions have not disabled CarPlay.
- For wireless CarPlay, confirm Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled and that the pairing profile is correct.
- Restart the iPhone and vehicle or receiver.
- Forget and re-pair the vehicle if the wireless connection remains unreliable.
- Test wired CarPlay, if available, to distinguish an app issue from a wireless connection problem.
An app may also lose CarPlay support, change its requirements or restrict features in a later update. Check the developer’s current listing if an app that previously worked disappears.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOffline use, privacy and subscriptions
Offline listening and navigation
Downloaded music, podcasts and audiobooks are generally the safest choices for offline listening. Offline maps depend on the navigation app and the regions downloaded. Live traffic, incident reports, charger status, gas prices, parking availability and updated place information require a data connection. Downloading an app does not guarantee that all of its CarPlay features work without cellular service.
Privacy
Review each app’s privacy disclosure rather than assuming that a CarPlay app handles data like Apple’s built-in apps. Relevant differences include location collection, background location, personalized advertising, driving or vehicle-data sharing, contact access, microphone access and notification permissions. CarPlay’s simplified interface does not eliminate the app’s underlying account and data practices.
Cost
Separate a free download from a free service. Some apps are ad-supported, some require a subscription for core content, and others reserve advanced features for paid plans. EV networks may charge session or membership fees independently of the app. Music, podcasts, audiobooks, satellite radio, parking and charging services can quickly create subscription fatigue, so choose one primary service per category where possible.

Safety and reliability tips
CarPlay is designed to reduce distraction, not eliminate it. Set destinations, download media, sign into accounts and arrange your app layout before moving. Use Siri and steering-wheel controls where possible, keep visual interactions brief, and pull over for anything that requires extended attention.
Live data is also an estimate, not a promise. Waze reports depend on local participation; Google Maps and Apple Maps traffic can change; PlugShare charger reports can be stale; and fuel, parking and ETA information can be wrong. Treat route and charger data as guidance and keep a backup plan on longer trips.
