General Motors announced on October 21, 2025, that it would end production of BrightDrop electric delivery vans at CAMI Assembly in Ingersoll, Ontario. GM said production would not be moved to another plant. The decision ends van manufacturing at CAMI; it does not resolve what will happen to the plant itself.
What GM announced
GM said BrightDrop production at CAMI had been suspended since May 2025 and would end rather than resume or transfer to another site. In its announcement, the company stated: “BrightDrop production will not be moved to another site.” (GM Canada, October 21, 2025)
GM attributed the decision to slower-than-expected growth in the commercial electric delivery van market and said CAMI was operating below capacity. The company also cited a changing regulatory environment and the elimination of U.S. tax credits as factors that made the business more challenging. Those are GM’s stated explanations; the announcement did not provide an independent market analysis or quantify how much each factor contributed.
What happens to CAMI Assembly?
The production decision did not settle the future of the Ingersoll plant. GM said it would work with Unifor and the Canadian and Ontario governments while evaluating next steps for CAMI. Kristian Aquilina, GM Canada’s president and managing director, described the situation as uncertain for the workforce and said the company was committed to working with employees, Unifor and the two governments as it evaluated the plant’s future. Aquilina said the decision “is driven by market demand and in no way reflects the commitment and skill of our workforce at CAMI.” GM’s announcement outlined compensation provisions for hourly employees, including six months of salary and potential lump-sum payments and other benefits under the collective agreement. The details are governed by that agreement.
Why the vans were called Chevrolet BrightDrop
GM announced in August 2024 that BrightDrop electric commercial vans would be sold under the Chevrolet brand and offered through Chevrolet’s commercial sales and service dealer network. GM estimated a combined city/highway range of 272 miles for the offering; that is a manufacturer estimate, not a guarantee of real-world range. (General Motors, August 29, 2024)

Why a later BrightDrop delivery label does not mean production restarted
GM’s Q2 2026 U.S. delivery report uses the category “BrightDrop 400 / 600 EV” for Chevrolet BrightDrop and BrightDrop Zevo vehicles. That is a reporting label, not evidence that manufacturing resumed after the October 2025 announcement. The report does not establish when the reported vehicles were built or explain inventory timing. (GM Investor Relations, Q2 2026 deliveries)
