Gibbs says its wheels retract hydraulically for water travel, where twin water jets provide propulsion. The company lists speeds of 80+ mph on land and 30+ mph on water, with a land-to-water transition in under five seconds; these are manufacturer specifications, not independently verified test results.
What is the Gibbs Humdinga?
The Humdinga is a 7-metre (23-foot) high-speed amphibian developed by Gibbs Technologies UK. Gibbs describes it as a road and off-road vehicle intended to transition between land and water, with potential recreation, utility, and rescue or first-responder applications. Its product page says it was made in limited quantities and that a small number have been made available to collectors.
Gibbs gives conflicting seating information on the product page: the overview describes 3- and 6-seat configurations, while the specifications table says “Up to 9.” The page therefore does not establish one definitive passenger capacity.
How does it transition from land to water?
Gibbs describes its high-speed amphibian (HSA) technology as a combination of powertrain, hull, water jet, and suspension systems. The Humdinga uses switchable two- or four-wheel drive on land and twin proprietary HSA water jets for marine propulsion. Gibbs’ general technology description says a single engine supplies power in both environments; a power take-off drives the wheels and water jet in most HSA configurations, and the wheels can be disengaged in marine mode.

For water travel, hydraulic suspension retracts the wheels clear of the water to reduce drag. Gibbs says the hull is designed to balance planing performance with the demands of accommodating retracting wheels, while its proprietary jet is intended to aid acceleration, maneuverability, and time to plane. The technology page gives a five-second wheel-retraction figure; the Humdinga product page separately claims a land-to-water transition in under five seconds.

What was the Humdinga developed for?
Gibbs presents the platform for recreation, utility, and rescue or first-responder situations. Those descriptions indicate intended uses; they do not establish a particular agency’s current deployment or show that every Humdinga configuration is equipped for emergency response.
The company says it has developed HSA technology since 1994 and dates the Humdinga to 2005. In 2007, Lockheed Martin announced an agreement with Gibbs Technologies to develop military high-speed amphibious vehicles using technology from Gibbs prototype platforms, including the Humdinga. Lockheed Martin’s announcement quoted Gibbs chairman Alan Gibbs describing HSAs as “high performance craft on the water, and high performance vehicles on the ground,” with a seamless transition between the two. This is a company chairman’s characterization in a partnership announcement, not an independent assessment.
