Getaround ended its U.S. car-sharing operations in February 2025. The board approved an orderly wind-down on February 7, the company announced it on February 11, and no new U.S. rentals were accepted after that date. Getaround cited an ongoing lack of liquidity—not a regulatory ban or one technical outage—and warned that U.S. liability insurance and vehicle protection might no longer be available from February 13.
What happened to Getaround in the United States?
Getaround ended its U.S. car-sharing business in February 2025. The company stopped accepting new U.S. rentals after February 11, and its shutdown also included HyreCar, the Getaround-owned service aimed at gig workers. This was not simply a pause in expansion: Getaround’s board approved an orderly wind-down because the company said it no longer had enough liquidity to keep U.S. operations viable.
Getaround’s customer guidance gave renters and vehicle owners only a short transition period. Rentals already in progress, or scheduled to end on or before February 13, were expected to continue with support. But Getaround warned that beginning February 13 it might no longer be able to provide U.S. liability insurance or its vehicle-protection program. Renters were therefore told to return vehicles promptly rather than continue using them after the cutoff.
The U.S. closure did not initially mean that Getaround had shut down worldwide. European operations continued in France, Norway, Spain, Germany, Belgium and Austria at the time. In 2026, Getaround arranged a sale of those European operations to GoMore and began the process of dissolving and liquidating the remaining corporate entity.

Getaround shutdown timeline
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| February 7, 2025 | Getaround’s board approved an orderly wind-down of the U.S. car-sharing and HyreCar businesses. The company estimated approximately $1.5 million to $2 million in reduction-in-force charges, with most U.S. employees expected to leave on February 14. |
| February 11, 2025 | Getaround publicly announced the U.S. shutdown. No new U.S. rentals were accepted after this date. |
| February 12, 2025 | Customer and vehicle-owner instructions were published, including guidance about returning vehicles, claims, insurance and Getaround Connect hardware. |
| February 13, 2025 | Rentals ending on or before this date were within the company’s stated transition guidance. Getaround warned that U.S. liability coverage and its protection program might no longer be available from this date. |
| February 14, 2025 | Most remaining U.S. employees were expected to separate as part of the workforce reduction. |
| April 8, 2026 | Getaround subsidiaries entered into an arrangement connected with GoMore’s purchase of the European business. |
| June 5, 2026 | Getaround’s board determined that dissolving and liquidating the company was in the best interests of the company and its remaining claimants. |
| July 29, 2026 | A special stockholder meeting was scheduled to vote on dissolution and the plan of liquidation and distribution. |
The reviewed materials do not establish whether the July 29, 2026 vote was completed or what the final vote tally was. That distinction matters: the February 2025 U.S. shutdown is confirmed, while the final legal status of the later dissolution proposal should be checked against a subsequent company filing if one becomes available.
Why did Getaround shut down its U.S. business?
Getaround’s stated reason was financial. The company said that, despite improvements in overall profitability and extensive restructuring, it faced an ongoing lack of liquidity. The board concluded that continuing to operate in the United States was no longer viable and that winding down the business would limit additional liabilities and help preserve value for residual claimants.
There is no indication in the company’s explanation that a regulatory ban, a single software failure or one isolated incident caused the shutdown. The central issue was the company’s cash position and its ability to continue funding U.S. operations and obligations.
Secondary reporting supplied additional context, including earlier North American workforce reductions, pressure following Getaround’s public-market combination and problems renewing liability insurance for HyreCar. Those factors help explain the operating pressure, but they should not replace Getaround’s primary explanation: insufficient liquidity made the U.S. business unsustainable.
What the shutdown meant for U.S. renters
The most urgent issue for a renter was insurance and vehicle responsibility. Getaround instructed U.S. customers to return vehicles promptly. Continuing to drive after the stated transition period could leave a renter personally responsible for third-party injuries or vehicle damage if Getaround’s liability coverage was unavailable.
In practical terms, a renter affected by the shutdown should have:
- Stopped using the vehicle as soon as the rental ended or the cutoff required. The company’s guidance did not authorize indefinite continued use simply because the app or reservation still appeared active.
- Returned the vehicle and keys according to the available instructions. If a return was disputed, preserving messages, reservation details, photographs and time-stamped records would help document what happened.
- Photographed the vehicle’s condition and location. Images of the exterior, interior, fuel or charge level, mileage and keys can be useful when responsibility is later disputed.
- Kept receipts for legitimate return-related costs. However, Getaround warned owners that its cash position meant it could not make certain payments for repair, recovery or supplemental-claim expenses. A receipt therefore did not guarantee reimbursement.
The insurance warning was especially important because the end of a platform rental and the end of platform protection are not necessarily the same event. Customers should not have assumed that a reservation, app status or prior policy wording guaranteed coverage after Getaround said coverage might no longer be available.

What the shutdown meant for vehicle owners and hosts
Hosts lost access to Getaround’s U.S. booking marketplace and had to recover vehicles, keys and any platform equipment. Getaround said it would assist with returning vehicles and that outstanding U.S. claims would be addressed through the wind-down.

That statement was not a promise that every claim would be paid in full or immediately. The owner guidance specifically acknowledged that the company could not make certain payments for repairs, vehicle recovery and supplemental-claim expenses because of its cash position. Owners dealing with an unresolved claim should preserve the rental agreement, inspection photographs, repair estimates, tow or recovery invoices, messages and proof of ownership.
Former hosts also needed to consider the installed Getaround Connect equipment, rather than treating the vehicle as ready for immediate transfer to another platform.
What happened to Getaround Connect hardware?
Getaround Connect was proprietary vehicle hardware connected to the car’s immobilizer and central locking. It allowed Getaround to support app-based locking and unlocking, but it was not merely a universal GPS tracker or an ordinary plug-in accessory.
Getaround’s U.S. wind-down instructions told owners to:
- Wait until the vehicle had been returned.
- Unlock the vehicle through the Getaround app to disable the immobilizer.
- Use the vehicle’s physical keys afterward.
- Leave the Connect device and removed materials with the owner rather than returning them to Getaround.
- Give the uninstall instructions to a vendor of the owner’s choice if the hardware needed to be removed.
If the app was unavailable or the owner was unfamiliar with vehicle electrical systems, forcing a lock, immobilizer or wiring change could create a safety or starting problem. A qualified automotive electrical or telematics technician is a more appropriate option for Getaround Connect removal than an improvised bypass.
A generic OBD tracker, remote starter or smart-lock product should not be presented as a direct replacement. Such a device may not work with the vehicle’s immobilizer or central locking, and it would not automatically reproduce Getaround’s platform controls, rental workflow, insurance or vehicle-protection arrangements. Hardware compatibility must be established for the specific vehicle, and a replacement device would still require a separate service and appropriate insurance.

HyreCar was included in the closure
HyreCar was part of Getaround’s U.S. wind-down rather than a surviving U.S. product. HyreCar rented vehicles to drivers working for gig-economy platforms, making its insurance and vehicle-availability requirements different from those of an ordinary short-term car rental.
Contemporary reporting said HyreCar was also ceasing U.S. operations and identified difficulties renewing liability insurance as part of the pressure on the service. The important practical result was the same for HyreCar users: U.S. reservations and the associated platform protection could not be treated as continuing normally after the wind-down.

Did Getaround shut down in Europe too?
Not at the time of the February 2025 announcement. Getaround said its European business would continue operating in its then-current markets, including France, Norway, Spain, Germany, Belgium and Austria. The U.S. closure should therefore not be described as an immediate worldwide shutdown.
The European business later moved toward a separate outcome. A 2026 filing described the sale of Getaround’s European operations to GoMore for approximately €31.5 million in cash, plus a promissory note and potential additional consideration. The transaction followed an April 8, 2026 arrangement in which Getaround subsidiaries granted GoMore an option connected to the purchase.
That European transaction did not revive the U.S. marketplace. Getaround’s board later cited the lack of an operating business, continuing costs and a lack of revenue sources when it determined on June 5, 2026 that dissolution and liquidation were in the company’s best interests.

What can replace Getaround in the United States?
There is no exact one-for-one replacement for Getaround. A former renter may want a peer-to-peer marketplace, while a former host may want a platform with different insurance, screening, fees, vehicle-access technology and claims procedures. Two broad alternatives are:
| Service | Model | Who may find it useful | Important differences |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turo | Peer-to-peer car-sharing marketplace | Renters seeking vehicles from local hosts, or former hosts looking for another marketplace | Insurance terms, fees, host requirements, vehicle access and geographic availability differ from Getaround’s former model. Confirm current terms before booking or listing. |
| Zipcar | Fleet-based, self-service hourly and daily car sharing | Drivers needing short-term urban mobility in a listed U.S. market | Zipcar is not a host marketplace. Vehicle selection, pickup locations, pricing, membership requirements and coverage work differently from peer-to-peer rental. |
For a Turo car-sharing alternative, compare the specific vehicle’s insurance and cancellation terms, host instructions, mileage limits, fees and pickup process rather than assuming they match Getaround. For drivers who need an hourly or daily vehicle without coordinating with an individual host, Zipcar alternative options may be more relevant, but availability depends on the city and the service’s current fleet.
Former hosts should also compare claims handling, payment timing, identity checks, vehicle eligibility, roadside assistance, telematics requirements and any restrictions on using a personally owned vehicle for commercial rental. A different marketplace may solve the booking problem without reproducing Getaround’s economics or operating responsibilities.
What readers should not infer
- The February 2025 action was not initially a worldwide shutdown; European operations continued at that time.
- The company’s statement that claims would be addressed through the wind-down did not guarantee that every outstanding claim would be paid in full.
- A generic tracker, remote starter or smart-lock is not automatically equivalent to Getaround Connect.
- The later GoMore transaction and dissolution proposal should not be conflated with the original U.S. service cutoff.
- The company’s own stated cause was a lack of liquidity and the need to limit further liabilities, not a confirmed regulatory prohibition.
This article is based on Getaround’s February 2025 customer and owner guidance, company filings and 2026 proxy materials, along with secondary reporting used for operational context. The status of the July 2026 dissolution vote was not established in the materials reviewed through August 12, 2026.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still rent a car through Getaround in the United States?
No. Getaround stopped accepting new U.S. rentals after February 11, 2025. Existing rentals were covered only by the company’s short transition guidance, and Getaround warned that U.S. liability insurance and its protection program might no longer be available from February 13.
Was Getaround’s shutdown worldwide?
No, not immediately. Getaround said its European operations would continue in markets including France, Norway, Spain, Germany, Belgium and Austria. In 2026, it arranged a sale of the European business to GoMore.
Will Getaround pay my outstanding claim?
Getaround said outstanding U.S. claims would be addressed through the wind-down, but its owner guidance also said it could not make certain repair, recovery and supplemental-claim payments because of its cash position. The reviewed materials do not guarantee full payment of every claim.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat should former hosts do with Getaround Connect hardware?
After the vehicle was returned, Getaround instructed owners to unlock it through the app to disable the immobilizer, then use the physical keys. Owners were told not to return the Connect device or removed materials and could use a vendor of their choice for removal. A generic tracker is not necessarily an equivalent replacement.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Getaround’s U.S. marketplace ended after February 11, 2025 because the company said its liquidity position made continued U.S. operations unsustainable. Renters needed to return vehicles promptly because insurance and protection could lapse, while hosts faced unresolved claims, vehicle recovery issues and Connect-hardware removal. Europe initially continued, later moved to GoMore, and Getaround subsequently pursued corporate dissolution.
