Ferrari’s F80 is the newest car in the limited-series supercar lineage that includes the F40—not an officially designated F40 replacement. Unveiled on 17 October 2024, it pairs a hybrid V6 powertrain with Ferrari’s stated combined maximum output of 1,200 hp, and production is limited to 799 examples.
Is the Ferrari F80 an F40 replacement?
Not in Ferrari’s official wording. Ferrari presents the F80 as the latest addition to its limited-series supercar lineage, alongside the GTO, F40 and LaFerrari. That makes it a new chapter in the same tradition, but Ferrari has not called it a direct replacement for the F40. Ferrari’s F80 announcement describes the car as joining a pantheon of icons while showcasing the marque’s technology and performance.
The distinction matters because the two cars reflect different eras and priorities. The F40 is an analog-era turbocharged V8 icon; Ferrari presents the F80 as a hybrid technology showcase. Their place in the lineage invites comparison, but it does not establish that they have the same character or that one is objectively the better successor.
How the F80 fits Ferrari’s limited-series lineage
Ferrari’s annual report traces the tradition from the 1984 GTO through the F40 (1987), F50 (1995), Enzo (2002), LaFerrari (2013), LaFerrari Aperta (2016) and F80, launched in October 2024. The F80 therefore follows a series of landmark, limited-run models rather than simply taking the F40’s place in a one-for-one model succession. Ferrari’s 2024 annual report sets out that lineage.

F40 and F80: what Ferrari’s figures do—and don’t—tell us
Ferrari’s published specifications show how far apart the cars are in powertrain era and stated output. They are historical and launch figures from Ferrari, not results from a like-for-like independent test.
| Measure | Ferrari F40 | Ferrari F80 |
|---|---|---|
| Powertrain | Turbocharged V8; Ferrari’s cited historical figures do not specify further powertrain details in the source. | Hybrid V6 with electric motors; Ferrari identifies the V6 as a 120-degree design. |
| Stated power | 478 CV, according to Ferrari’s historical F40 figures. | 1,200 hp combined maximum power, according to Ferrari’s 2024 launch announcement. |
| Other cited performance figures | 324 km/h top speed; 0–100 km/h in 4.1 seconds, according to Ferrari’s historical figures. | Comparable figures are not stated in the cited F80 launch material. |
| Production | Not stated in the cited historical specification source. | 799 examples, Ferrari’s announced limited production run. |
CV and hp are different units, and Ferrari’s figures come from different source contexts. The table is not a direct performance comparison, and it should not be read as one car being faster or more powerful under matched test conditions. Ferrari’s cited F40 source gives no publication year, while the F80 output and production figures are from its 2024 announcement. Ferrari’s F40 model page lists the historical figures.

What Ferrari says the F80 is built to do
Ferrari describes the F80 as a road-usable, track-oriented supercar. Its launch material highlights a carbon-fibre chassis, active aerodynamic devices, active suspension and a hybrid V6 powertrain. The car is homologated for two occupants, though Ferrari says the cockpit has a distinct single-seater feel.
Ferrari says the 120-degree V6 and electric motors deliver 1,200 hp of combined maximum power, and links the architecture to contemporary motorsport, including Formula 1 and the World Endurance Championship. That is Ferrari’s stated engineering rationale; it does not make the F80 equivalent to an F40 road car or prove how either will feel to drive.

Why the F80 is worth getting excited about
The appeal is not that Ferrari has recreated the F40. It is that the company has added a dramatically different machine to a lineage associated with its most ambitious limited-series cars. The F40’s identity is rooted in its turbocharged V8 and analog-era place in Ferrari history; the F80’s launch story is about hybrid power, active systems and Ferrari’s current approach to road-and-track performance.
With 799 examples announced, the F80 is also deliberately scarce. That production figure signals a limited run, not how many cars remain available or whether a prospective buyer can obtain one. Ferrari’s announcement is the basis for both the figure and the F80’s place beside the F40 in the lineage.
