The party took 43.8% of the vote and 39 of the Landtag’s 83 seats—three short of the 42 needed for an absolute majority. Winning the most votes does not, by itself, make a party the state government.
What happened in Saxony-Anhalt?
The AfD came first in the election, a major electoral gain but not the outright takeover suggested by the earlier forward-looking headline. The Associated Press reported the final result as 43.8% of the vote and 39 seats. An absolute majority in the 83-seat Landtag requires 42 seats, leaving the AfD three short. Associated Press, 6 September 2026.
The other reported results show the choices facing parties seeking to form a government:
| Party | Vote share | Seats | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| AfD | 43.8% | 39 | Associated Press, 6 September 2026 |
| CDU | 17.2% | 15 | OSW Centre for Eastern Studies, 7 September 2026 |
| SPD | 9.3% | 8 | OSW Centre for Eastern Studies, 7 September 2026 |
| Greens | 8.9% | 8 | OSW Centre for Eastern Studies, 7 September 2026 |
| Die Linke | 8.6% | 8 | OSW Centre for Eastern Studies, 7 September 2026 |
| BSW | 5.3% | 5 | CBS News, updated 7 September 2026 |
Why winning the election is not the same as taking power
The Landtag is Saxony-Anhalt’s state legislature; it is not the state government. A party can win more votes and seats than any rival without having enough seats to govern alone. The executive outcome depends on the formation of a governing majority and the election of a minister-president—not simply on who finishes first.

Other parties have rejected coalition cooperation with the AfD, a practice commonly called the “firewall.” That refusal complicates the AfD’s route to government, while the parties opposed to it must find a way to assemble a governing majority without it. As CBS reported after the result, the AfD had sought an absolute majority to govern alone but fell short. CBS News, updated 7 September 2026.
Does the AfD still have a path to power in Saxony-Anhalt?
The election result alone does not answer that question. In its 26 September report, Le Monde said no governing coalition had emerged and that the newly elected Landtag was due to convene on 6 October. Those details describe the situation reported before that session; they do not establish what happened afterward. The sources available here do not confirm a later government-formation outcome, so it would be inaccurate to say the AfD formed a government—or that it definitively could not do so. What the result says about AfD support—and what it does not
The AfD’s vote share rose by 23 percentage points compared with the 2021 Saxony-Anhalt election, according to OSW’s post-election analysis. OSW points to factors including the popularity of AfD lead candidate Ulrich Siegmund, dissatisfaction with the state’s CDU government and dissatisfaction with federal performance. These are the analysis’s explanations of the result, not proof that every voter was motivated by the same concerns. OSW Centre for Eastern Studies, 7 September 2026.
Before the vote, political scientist Wolfgang Merkel said, “If AfD wins the election and forms the government, that would be kind of breaking a taboo in Germany.” His comment was conditional: the party’s first-place finish did not itself mean it had formed a government. After the result, Siegmund said, “we have written history”—his characterization of the win, not a neutral description of the government outcome. Both remarks were reported by the Associated Press. Associated Press, 31 August and 6 September 2026.

How Saxony-Anhalt compares with polling in other eastern states
Polling trends elsewhere are a separate, dated snapshot—not election results, a simultaneous measurement or an official forecast. Wahlergebnisse.io’s trend, as of 1 October 2026, showed the following state-level values, each based on a different latest-poll date:
| State | AfD polling trend | Latest-poll date |
|---|---|---|
| Brandenburg | 35.5% | 24 June 2026 |
| Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania | 36.8% | 17 September 2026 |
| Saxony | 42.0% | 21 May 2026 |
| Thuringia | 40.0% | 2 July 2026 |
These figures concern the named states, not Germany as a whole, and should not be read as forecasts of what another election will produce. Wahlergebnisse.io polling trend, as of 1 October 2026.
