Germany’s 2026 EV Grant Reaches 100,000 Approved Applications

Germany’s 2026 electric-car grant has passed the 100,000-household milestone, according to a report citing BAFA figures. The exact reported count was 97,790 approved applications as of 1 October 2026; the milestone was reached shortly afterward. The grant is available to eligible private buyers and lessees of new vehicles first registered from 1 January 2026, and the amount depends on the vehicle and household circumstances.

What the 100,000-application milestone means

A report published on 5 October said BAFA had approved 97,790 applications by the 1 October cutoff and that the 100,000 mark was reached shortly after. The figure is a rounded milestone, not an exact count of approvals on 1 October. The report said €432 million had been paid out by that date, and the average grant was €4,418 per household. Electrive’s report attributes these figures to BAFA statistics.

That is a different measure from applications received. An earlier Bundestag report recorded 84,828 applications submitted, 20,015 approved and 291 rejected by 16 July 2026. Its approval count should not be compared with the October figure without noting the different dates.

What recipients are buying

In the statistics reported for the 1 October cutoff, 91.6% of approvals were for battery-electric vehicles; most of the remainder were for plug-in hybrids. The same report said 52.3% of approved households were in the taxable annual household-income band up to €45,000. These are reported snapshots, not eligibility thresholds or predictions for future applicants.

Who can qualify for the German EV grant?

The Federal Environment Ministry’s programme guidance covers private individuals buying or leasing a new EU category M1 vehicle registered for the first time in Germany. Eligible vehicle types include battery-electric cars, qualifying plug-in hybrids and range-extended vehicles; the ministry’s FAQ also lists fuel-cell vehicles at the same rates as fully electric cars. Used cars are not covered by this new-vehicle programme.

  • Income: Taxable household income must be no more than €80,000 a year. The ceiling rises by €5,000 for each eligible child, up to two children, making it €90,000 for households with two or more qualifying children. This is taxable household income, not gross income.
  • Purchase or lease: Either route can qualify, provided the vehicle and applicant meet the programme rules.
  • Registration: The vehicle must be registered for the first time in Germany and fall within the eligible registration period.

How much can an applicant receive?

The grant is not a flat €6,000 payment. The ministry’s tables set different amounts by powertrain, taxable household income and eligible children:

Vehicle type Grant range Key qualification
Battery-electric vehicle (BEV) €3,000–€6,000 Amount varies with household income and eligible children.
Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) or range-extended vehicle €1,500–€4,500 Amount varies with household income and eligible children; the vehicle must also meet the applicable emissions or electric-range condition.
Fuel-cell vehicle Same subsidy rates as fully electric vehicles, according to the ministry FAQ Confirm the vehicle and applicant meet the programme’s current rules.

The maximum €6,000 applies to qualifying BEVs in the lowest income/family tier; it is not the amount every approved household receives. The ministry states the programme has a total allocation of €3 billion and estimates it could support around 800,000 vehicles over 2026–2029.

Extra condition for some plug-in hybrids and range extenders

For PHEVs and range-extended vehicles registered from 1 January 2026 through 30 June 2027, the ministry says the model must meet at least one of these conditions: type-approval emissions no higher than 60 g CO₂/km, or an electric range of at least 80 km. The stated end date is 30 June 2027; check official guidance for any later change or extension.

Can a car registered in January 2026 still qualify?

Yes, if it meets the programme requirements. Eligible first registrations date back to 1 January 2026, although applications opened later, on 19 May 2026. The law allows applications after the purchase or lease contract for qualifying vehicles registered from 1 January. Applicants should confirm that their specific vehicle, contract and registration meet the current rules before applying.
