New-car examples include the Škoda Kamiq and Volkswagen Taigo small SUVs, plus the newly orderable BMW 3 Series. These are five supported picks—not a defensible ranking of ten: the available comparisons cover selected segments, not the whole German market. Prices below are dated ADAC figures or BMW launch prices and should not be treated as live quotes.
How to read these recommendations
A German car is not automatically a good buy because of its badge or a reader-poll result. Value depends on the exact trim and powertrain, whether the car is new or used, and the price and mileage assumptions behind a comparison. ADAC’s used-car analysis, published March 31, 2026, combined its new-car test grades with DAT-Marktspiegel prices. It assessed 171 tested vehicles and compared three-year-old cars at 33,000 km, adjusting prices for mileage where appropriate. That makes it a useful, defined comparison—not a guarantee of today’s asking price.
ADAC examines around 100 current models per year using more than 300 test criteria. Its test scheme was revised in 2026, so grades from before and after the revision are not automatically comparable. For more about the approach, see ADAC’s test method.
The shortlist below reflects the evidence available for Germany. It does not establish which car is best for every budget or prove that these are the ten best German cars overall.

Used cars under €30,000
Volkswagen Golf Variant 2.0 TDI R-Line DSG: family space and motorway comfort
ADAC ranked this exact version first in its under-€30,000 used-car value band. Its listed price was €26,670 for a three-year-old car adjusted to 33,000 km in the analysis published March 31, 2026. ADAC described it as comfortable, economical and versatile, noting strengths in its engine, assistance systems and space. It also pointed to awkward controls and a high price.
The estate body makes this a practical candidate for buyers who need cargo room and expect to cover longer distances. The cited value judgment applies to the specified diesel R-Line with DSG under ADAC’s stated age-and-mileage assumptions; it is not a claim that every Golf Variant is a bargain or that a comparable listing will still cost €26,670.
Rank #2
- Includes lifelike driver figure
- Kit includes decals for 5 versions
- 1/35 Scale vehicle
BMW 220i Active Tourer Steptronic (DKG): a premium compact alternative
ADAC included this version in the same under-€30,000 group at €25,584, using the same three-year-old, 33,000-km comparison basis. Its test grade was 2.1, and the listed three-year depreciation was €12,566. The Golf Variant—not the BMW—ranked first in that price band. The Active Tourer is a reasonable alternative to investigate if you want a compact premium people carrier rather than an estate.
Neither cited price is a current offer. Check the individual car’s mileage, service history, equipment and condition before comparing it with the analysis.
Rank #3

New small SUVs in ADAC’s 2026 test table
For shoppers seeking a new small SUV, ADAC’s 2026 table gives these test-time prices and overall grades for specific versions. The prices are tied to the test and are not live dealer quotes.
| Model and exact version | ADAC test-time price | Overall grade | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|---|
| Škoda Kamiq 1.0 TSI Selection DSG | €31,090 | 2.2 | A tested small-SUV option at the listed price and grade. |
| Volkswagen Taigo 1.0 TSI OPF Style DSG | €29,125 | 2.4 | A lower test-time price than the listed Kamiq version, with a lower overall grade. |
| Volkswagen Taigo 1.5 TSI OPF Style DSG | €34,715 | 2.4 | A more powerful listed Taigo version with the same overall grade in the table. |
These entries provide a limited, trim-specific comparison—not a complete assessment of equipment, fuel costs or ownership expenses. Compare the exact specification you can order with the one ADAC tested. The source table is ADAC’s model overview.
Rank #4

New sport sedan: BMW 3 Series
BMW opened orders in Germany for the updated 3 Series on September 30, 2026, according to ADAC. The launch prices reported for the sedan were €49,900 for the 318 and €54,900 for the 320; the M350 xDrive starts at €80,900. These are launch prices, not a comparison with the used-car or SUV test-time figures above. ADAC reported that a Touring version was planned for 2027, so it should not be treated as orderable on the date of this guide.
ADAC reported BMW’s stated chassis objective as a “better compromise between long-distance comfort and sporty handling.” That is the manufacturer’s aim, not an independent confirmation of how the car performs. See ADAC’s BMW 3 Series coverage for the launch details.

What the reliability figures do—and do not—say
ADAC’s 2026 breakdown summary recorded the BMW i3 at 0.4 and Tesla Model 3 at 0.7 among the lowest-breakdown three-year-old vehicles in its overall set. Among combustion cars, the Mini and BMW X2 each recorded 0.8. These are cohort-specific ADAC breakdown indices, not universal reliability scores for every year, engine or individual car. They also do not establish that these models are better buys than the five picks above.
For a used-car decision, a fleet-level breakdown figure cannot replace checking the specific vehicle’s maintenance records, inspection results and condition. The ADAC breakdown statistics provide the relevant context for interpreting the indices.
Why this is not a ten-car ranking
The title’s broad wording could suggest a comprehensive list, but the evidence supports only selected used wagons, one used compact premium alternative, two new small-SUV models and a new sport sedan. It does not give matching prices and test grades for ten cars across German brands and body styles, nor a consistent comparison of service costs, warranties or ownership costs. Adding five more models without comparable support would create a longer list, not a more reliable buying guide.
Around 95,000 readers voted in auto motor und sport’s Best Cars 2026 poll, and Volkswagen Group says its brands won ten of 25 categories. That is a reader poll, not a value or dependability test, so it cannot fill the gaps in a price-and-test comparison. Likewise, a manufacturer lineup is evidence of what a brand offers, not proof that any one model represents good value. For example, Mercedes-Benz Germany’s model overview spans combustion, plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles, but does not establish a value leader.
How to choose from this shortlist
- Need space for family trips and frequent longer drives? Start by comparing used Golf Variant listings against ADAC’s dated, mileage-adjusted benchmark.
- Prefer a compact premium people carrier? Consider the BMW 220i Active Tourer as an alternative in the same used-price band, while accounting for its different body style and ADAC’s lower ranking in that band.
- Want a new small SUV? Compare the Kamiq and Taigo in the exact trim you can buy; the ADAC test-time prices and grades above are not current quotes.
- Want a new sport sedan? Use the BMW 3 Series launch prices as a dated starting point, and verify present order status and dealer pricing.
Volkswagen Group’s 2026 plans included entry-level electric models, an Audi Q4 e-tron update and electric Porsche Cayenne models. These are planned-launch context, not confirmation that a specific model is currently orderable in Germany. Check local specifications and availability before treating a planned vehicle as a purchase option.
