George Russell’s late retirement in Malaysia set up a major setback for his Singapore Grand Prix: Mercedes expected a power-unit change to leave him starting Sunday’s race from the back of the grid. The reported penalty does not apply to Saturday’s Sprint, but the reliability blow comes as Russell enters the weekend 84 points behind teammate Kimi Antonelli.
Why is George Russell expected to start from the back in Singapore?
Mercedes expected Russell to take a significant grid penalty after bringing forward a power-unit change following his retirement in Malaysia. Formula1.com reported on October 7, 2026, that the replacement components were expected to exceed his season allocation. The report said the penalty would be at least 10 grid places, depending on which components were changed, and that Mercedes expected a back-of-grid start for Sunday’s Grand Prix. This was the team’s expectation before the Singapore weekend, not a final post-event classification. Formula1.com’s report.
The penalty was reported to apply to Sunday’s Grand Prix, not Saturday’s Sprint. That keeps the two sessions distinct: the expected penalty affects Russell’s Grand Prix starting position, while the Sprint remains a separate points opportunity. The FIA may publish or confirm the applicable penalty details as the weekend proceeds.
What happened to Russell in Malaysia?
Russell retired after 49 laps of the 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. The FIA’s race report records Max Verstappen as the winner, Kimi Antonelli second and Lewis Hamilton third, with Russell classified as a retirement. He had been running in a position from which a podium appeared possible when his race ended. FIA race report.

Mercedes attributed the Singapore engine change to damage associated with the Malaysia retirement, bringing forward a change it had expected to make later. The failure therefore has a consequence beyond the points Russell missed in Malaysia: it has also put him in line for a compromised Grand Prix start in Singapore.
What Mercedes has said about the car and penalty
Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff described the Malaysia weekend as difficult and said the team was still investigating its performance. As quoted in Formula1.com’s October 7 report, he said: “We have identified several areas we need to investigate further, but F1 doesn’t offer simple answers and we need more evidence before drawing firm conclusions.” Wolff said Mercedes would evaluate its latest update package against the previous specification across the Singapore weekend.

Formula1.com reported that Antonelli entered Singapore 84 points ahead of Russell. Its October 7 championship analysis said 183 points remained in the season and described Antonelli’s lead as decisive, but the championship was not thereby mathematically decided: that would depend on the standings and points available as the season progressed.
