Max Verstappen won the rain-affected 2026 Singapore Grand Prix Sprint after George Russell, who had passed him for the lead at Turn 1, crashed at the final corner on the opening lap. The FIA reported that Russell lost control over the kerb on the corner exit and hit the inside barrier. Verstappen inherited the lead and finished 2.591 seconds ahead of Lewis Hamilton.
How Russell went from second on the grid to the lead
Verstappen started from pole after setting a 1:31.156 in Sprint Qualifying, 0.120 seconds ahead of Russell. Charles Leclerc had qualified third. Russell did not start ahead of Verstappen; he made the stronger launch and passed the pole-sitter into Turn 1.

Heavy rain swept across Marina Bay shortly before the scheduled start. Standing water at Turns 2 and 3 prompted a 30-minute delay. After two formation laps, the 20-lap Sprint began on intermediate tyres.
Why George Russell crashed
At the end of the opening lap, Russell lost control over the kerb exiting the final corner and hit the inside barrier, according to the FIA’s race report. He was listed as retired after one lap. The report does not attribute the crash to a mechanical failure or assign blame beyond describing the loss of control.

How Verstappen converted the inherited lead into a win
The Safety Car was deployed while marshals recovered the stranded cars. The field completed five laps behind it before racing resumed. Verstappen controlled the restart ahead of Hamilton and Leclerc. As the track dried, the intermediate tyres wore; Verstappen extended his advantage and held the lead to the finish.

The FIA reported eight retirements in total. On the final lap, McLaren teammates Piastri and Norris made contact as Norris attempted to pass at Turn 5, affecting the order behind the podium.
