The Acura MDX is the more straightforward choice if you need three rows in every configuration; the Genesis GV80 offers a third row only on select trims, where cargo space behind it is limited. Performance depends on engine and trim: the 2026 GV80 ranges from 300 to 375 horsepower, while Acura’s cited 355-hp MDX figure is for the 2026 Type S Advance. Available reliability scores favor the GV80, but they are not a long-term head-to-head study.

Space and seating: check the exact GV80 trim first
The MDX is described by Acura as a three-row SUV, with published legroom of 41.6 inches in the first row, 38.5 in the second and 29.1 in the third. The 2026 GV80 guide shows a third row only on some trims. A GV80 advertised with seven-passenger seating should therefore be compared with the MDX only after confirming that the specific GV80 configuration includes that row.

GV80 figures are from Genesis’s 2026 product guide; MDX figures are from Acura’s 2026 specifications page, which says cargo measurements use SAE J1100. The cited GV80 guide does not provide a matching measurement-method statement, and the manufacturers label standard and maximum figures differently. Treat the table as a guide to configuration and row-by-row capacity, not a controlled measurement comparison.
For a buyer who regularly carries six or seven people, the critical number is cargo room with every seat occupied: the GV80’s listed 11.6 cu. ft. behind its third row is a small luggage area. If you usually fold the third row, compare the applicable behind-row-two figures and verify them on the exact trim; the GV80’s number varies by powertrain and trim.

Performance: compare engines and trims, not just badges
The 2026 GV80 guide lists two engines, both requiring premium fuel: a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 300 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque, and a 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 with 375 hp and 391 lb-ft. Acura’s cited 355-hp MDX figure belongs specifically to the 2026 Type S Advance.
Acura’s comparison page pairs that MDX with a 2025 Genesis GV80 Advanced 3.5T, rated there at 375 hp. That is a trim-specific, cross-model-year comparison—not proof that every 2026 GV80 is more powerful than every 2026 MDX. The page also lists seven selectable drive modes for the MDX Type S and five for the referenced 2025 GV80; those counts likewise apply only to those versions.

Genesis publishes the following EPA city/highway/combined ratings for 2026 GV80 configurations:

These are configuration-specific figures from the Genesis 2026 GV80 guide. A comparable MDX EPA figure was not established for this comparison, so these numbers do not support naming an overall fuel-economy winner. Compare the EPA label for the exact MDX and GV80 configurations you are considering.

Reliability: one score favors GV80, but it does not settle ownership risk
J.D. Power’s 2026 model pages show Quality & Reliability scores of 83/100 for the GV80 and 77/100 for the MDX. On that specific measure, the GV80 scores higher. These are model-page ratings, however—not matched repair-rate data, a long-term failure comparison, or an analysis of the same model-year ownership cohort. They cannot establish which SUV will be more dependable over years of use or cost less to repair.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety lists the 2026 Acura MDX as a Top Safety Pick. Its page reports Good ratings for the small overlap front and updated side tests, and an Acceptable rating for the updated moderate overlap front test. Those results describe the MDX; an equivalent 2026 GV80 rating was not established here, so they do not show that the MDX is safer than the Genesis.

Which SUV fits your priorities?
- Choose the MDX for predictable three-row availability. Acura identifies it as a three-row SUV and publishes measurements for all three rows. Check the third-row legroom and cargo capacity against the people and luggage you actually carry.
- Consider the GV80 if you prefer its powertrain range or do not need a third row in every trim. The 2.5T and 3.5T differ substantially in output and EPA ratings; third-row availability and cargo capacity also depend on trim.
- Do not choose on reliability scores alone. The available J.D. Power scores give the GV80 the higher rating, but do not provide the long-term, matched evidence needed to declare a dependable-ownership winner.
- Compare like with like before buying. Match model year, trim, engine, drivetrain and seat configuration, and consult the vehicle’s own window sticker or current manufacturer specifications for the exact vehicle.
