Genesis has launched the GV80 Hybrid in South Korea, confirming a 2.5-liter turbo hybrid with 352 PS and a combined fuel-economy figure of 12.0 km/L for a specific five-seat, two-wheel-drive model on 19-inch wheels. The Korean price is KRW 76.8 million. It gives Lexus a newly confirmed competitor, but it does not yet establish a U.S. launch or prove the Genesis is better than the RX Hybrid.
What Genesis has confirmed about the GV80 Hybrid
Genesis announced its next-generation 2.5 Turbo Hybrid system on August 13, 2026, then launched the GV80 Hybrid in Korea on October 6. Genesis describes it as the first hybrid model under the Genesis brand and the first Hyundai Motor Group hybrid system to use a liquid-cooled hybrid battery. Genesis’s system announcement and Korea launch release provide the manufacturer’s specifications.

Genesis says the output and torque are approximately 16% and 26% higher, respectively, than those of the gasoline GV80 2.5 Turbo. Its August announcement initially described an efficiency improvement of approximately 25% or more, based on internal testing of a five-seat, 2WD model with 19-inch wheels; that was a pre-certification estimate. The October Korean release reports the certified combined figure of 12.0 km/L for that configuration and describes it as approximately 29% better than the gasoline 2.5 Turbo. Those figures refer to Genesis’s stated Korean-market comparison, not a U.S. EPA test.
How the hybrid system works
The system uses two motor-generators in a parallel arrangement. The P1 unit starts the engine and generates power; the P2 drive motor helps propel the vehicle and recovers energy through regenerative braking. Genesis lists the P2 motor at 59.1 kW and pairs the system with a new seven-speed transmission.

The Korea launch release also lists hierarchical predictive control and smart regenerative braking. AWD versions are described as having hybrid terrain performance. Other announced features include vehicle-to-load (V2L) power and Stay Mode, which allows electrical functions to operate while parked. Genesis also notes dual-valve electronic control shock absorbers, a refreshed grille, and new wheel designs.
GV80 Hybrid vs. Lexus RX 350h: what the figures show
The Lexus RX Hybrid remains a meaningful rival, but the available numbers are not a direct comparison: the GV80 figures below are for Korea, while Lexus’s figures are for the U.S. market and use different units and test contexts.

The RX specifications and starting price are from Lexus USA’s 2026 RX Hybrid page; its listed price may change. The 12.0 km/L Korean figure should not be converted into a U.S. MPG claim or treated as an EPA estimate. Differences in market, trim, drive layout, wheel size, and fuel-economy testing prevent a like-for-like efficiency or price verdict.
An April 2024 AP comparison by Edmunds assessed the gasoline GV80 against the Lexus RX, not the new hybrid. It favored the GV80 for ride comfort, cargo utility, higher maximum towing capacity, and available third-row seating, while noting the RX’s broader choice of hybrid powertrains and better fuel economy than the gasoline GV80 at that time. That road-test context cannot establish how the GV80 Hybrid compares with the RX Hybrid.

Is the GV80 Hybrid coming to the United States?
A U.S. launch, price, and EPA fuel-economy figure are not established. Genesis USA’s GV80 page lists gasoline 2.5T and 3.5T configurations and a $58,850 starting MSRP; it does not list a hybrid. The Korean launch confirms sales in South Korea only, so buyers in the United States should not assume availability, pricing, or timing from it.

The GV80 Hybrid adds a high-output hybrid option to Genesis’s flagship SUV lineup and introduces a direct new point of comparison for luxury-SUV shoppers. The confirmed Korean figures make the powertrain a serious development, but they are not enough to declare it the winner over the RX 350h. A verdict on relative efficiency, price, refinement, or utility requires comparable market specifications and an independent evaluation of the hybrid GV80 itself.
