Gemini is no longer merely coming to Android Auto. Google began rolling it out in November 2025 and said in May 2026 that it was widely available. Existing Android Auto users generally do not need a new car, phone, or paid Gemini plan to try the basic experience—but availability still depends on the phone, account, language, country, apps, and Google’s server-side rollout.
Gemini brings more natural voice conversations to Android Auto, including follow-up questions, route-aware place searches, message summaries, translations, and searches across connected Google information. Some of the most striking features announced for 2026, however, belong to later Android Auto updates or to cars with Google built-in rather than ordinary phone-projection Android Auto.

Google’s Android Auto product page presents the broader next-generation in-car experience, including Gemini, interface changes, navigation improvements, and parked entertainment. Treat any video demonstration as a product showcase, not proof that every feature is live on every car.
When watching, distinguish between:
- Gemini in Android Auto: the voice assistant experience projected from a connected Android phone.
- Cars with Google built-in: vehicles running Google’s automotive software and hardware directly.
- Future-facing demonstrations: features described as coming later in 2026 or limited to supported vehicles and apps.
A vehicle-specific feature shown in a built-in-Google demonstration does not automatically become available through Android Auto.

What Gemini can do in Android Auto now
Google’s November 2025 guide describes Gemini as a more conversational replacement or upgrade to the traditional Assistant experience in Android Auto. Instead of memorizing rigid commands, you can speak more naturally and continue with follow-up questions.
Maps, destinations, and stops
You can ask Gemini to find restaurants or other businesses along your route, summarize reviews, and add a selected destination as a stop in Google Maps. For example, a request can develop from “Find a highly rated Italian restaurant on the way” to “Does it have outdoor seating?” and then “Add it as a stop.”
These are documented capabilities, not a guarantee that every place search or Maps action works in every country, language, account, or vehicle.

Gemini can summarize incoming messages, help compose a reply, include an estimated arrival time, and translate messages into more than 40 languages where the relevant language support is available. You should still keep exchanges short while driving; a more natural conversation can become more distracting if you keep extending it.
Connected information and entertainment
Google says Gemini can search information from Gmail, Calendar, and other connected services, create playlists, and discuss general topics. It can also support Gemini Live-style back-and-forth conversations for brainstorming or rehearsing a conversation.

App integrations are uneven. Gemini cannot be assumed to control every Android Auto app or perform every action that Google Assistant supported.
Gemini versus Google Assistant
The main change is the interaction model, not a promise of unlimited new car controls.

Google’s Gemini support documentation warns that the service is new and evolving. Some Assistant functions, languages, or actions may not yet be supported. If a familiar command stops working, that may be a compatibility limitation rather than a problem with your microphone or car.
How to activate Gemini in Android Auto
- Install or update the Gemini mobile app on the Android phone you use with Android Auto.
- Sign in to the Google Account associated with your Android Auto setup.
- Connect the phone to a compatible vehicle or aftermarket receiver by USB or wirelessly.
- Start Android Auto on the car display.
- Look for Google’s Gemini introduction message or a change from the Assistant interface to Gemini.
You can then start a request in any of these ways:
- Say “Hey Google.”
- Tap the microphone button on the Android Auto display.
- Long-press the steering-wheel voice-control button, if your car supports that function.
Google’s Android Auto help page and Gemini documentation make clear that supported phones, cars, languages, territories, and account configurations affect availability.
Gemini is missing: what to check
If your car still launches Google Assistant, there is not necessarily a manual switch that can force Gemini onto the account. Try the supported basics:

- Confirm that Gemini is the active assistant on the phone.
- Update the Gemini app, Google app, Android Auto components, and phone software.
- Check whether your selected phone language and country are supported.
- Disconnect and reconnect Android Auto.
- Restart both the phone and the vehicle’s infotainment system.
- Check whether the Google Account is managed by an employer, school, or other organization with restrictions.
- Verify that your car or aftermarket receiver actually supports Android Auto.
Installing an Android Auto beta or an unofficial APK does not guarantee access to a server-controlled rollout and can create separate stability or security problems. If the setup otherwise works but Gemini never appears, the feature may simply not yet be enabled for that account or configuration.
Android Auto versus Google built-in
Android Auto projects selected phone functionality onto a compatible car display. You need a compatible Android phone and a compatible vehicle or aftermarket receiver.
Cars with Google built-in run Google’s automotive software directly in the vehicle. They can have deeper access to vehicle hardware and may support features unavailable through projection. Google said Android Auto was supported by more than 250 million cars and that cars with Google built-in were available in more than 100 models from 16 brands in its May 2026 announcement; those are Google’s figures.

Android Auto features announced for later in 2026
Google’s May 12, 2026 announcement describes a staged expansion rather than a single update that is already live everywhere.
Material 3 Expressive redesign
The refreshed interface is planned to use Google’s Material 3 Expressive design language, with more expressive fonts, smoother animations, wallpapers, and widgets for information and shortcuts. Google also describes edge-to-edge Maps and layouts that can adapt to ultrawide, portrait, circular, and other unusual displays.

More immersive navigation
Google says Maps will add immersive 3D views of buildings, overpasses, and terrain, along with more prominent lanes, traffic lights, and stop signs. Google calls this its biggest Google Maps update in more than a decade; the claim is Google’s description, not an independent measurement.
Parked video
Supported cars and apps are expected to receive full-HD video playback, including YouTube, while the vehicle is parked. Google says supported cars are expected to receive 60-frame-per-second full-HD playback. Its initial automaker list included BMW, Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata, and Volvo.
This is not permission to watch video while driving. Where supported, compatible apps can transition to audio-only playback when driving resumes.
Dolby Atmos and spatial audio
Google also announced Dolby Atmos or spatial-sound support in selected apps and vehicles. The initial supported-brand list included BMW, Genesis, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata, and Volvo. Support depends on the particular vehicle, software, app, and market.
What Gemini Intelligence means
Gemini Intelligence is a broader Android initiative, not simply the standard Android Auto assistant update.

Google describes it as software that can understand context, anticipate needs, and complete tasks across supported apps. Examples include Magic Cue finding an address in messages, email, or Calendar and suggesting a reply, or ordering food through DoorDash after the user confirms the order.
Google said Gemini Intelligence would begin with recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones before expanding to other Android devices, including cars, later in 2026. That does not mean every Android Auto user automatically receives these agentic features.
Safety, accuracy, and privacy
Gemini can produce a confident but incorrect answer. Google warns that it may present inaccurate information as fact and should not be relied upon for critical information or safety matters.

- Verify any important information independently when it is safe to do so.
- Keep conversations brief and avoid experimenting with unfamiliar requests in heavy traffic.
- Use parked-video features only when the vehicle is safely parked.
- Have a passenger handle setup, account changes, and troubleshooting where possible.
- Review which connected services Gemini can access, since messages, Gmail, Calendar, and other personal information may be involved.
Even in an eligible car with Google built-in, a response about a dashboard warning or vehicle function should not replace the owner’s manual, a qualified technician, or emergency guidance.
Do you need a new phone, car, or subscription?
For the basic Gemini-in-Android-Auto rollout, the cited Google documentation does not establish a requirement for a paid Gemini or Google AI plan. You generally need the compatible hardware you already use: an Android phone, a compatible Android Auto vehicle or aftermarket receiver, the Gemini app, and a signed-in Google Account.
You may need different hardware only for capabilities tied to cars with Google built-in or specific future vehicle integrations. Check Google’s Android Auto compatibility information rather than assuming that a new Pixel phone, a new car, or a subscription is necessary.
