In New Atlas’s October 20, 2015 review, its unusual ride and novelty were balanced by a difficult initial learning curve, awkward carrying, and concerns about braking and sidewalk cracks. Those are observations from that 2015 review—not findings from a current test or a controlled safety assessment.
What is the Gauswheel Spirit?
The Spirit is an unconventional inline two-wheeler intended to combine elements of skateboards, scooters and roller blades. The rider stands on grip-taped platforms beside the large rear wheel, which sits between the rider’s calves. A smaller polyurethane wheel swivels at the front. The 2015 New Atlas review described the Spirit as Hungarian-made and noted a carrying handle and a high-density foam pad on one side for the rider to brace a calf against.
It is not motorized: the rider moves it by kicking off the ground. Its layout differs from a conventional scooter or skateboard, so familiarity with either does not necessarily make its balance and steering feel familiar.
How does it ride?
To get moving, the rider places one foot on a platform and pushes off with the other, then brings the pushing foot up once the Spirit is rolling. The reviewer found balancing and traveling in a straight line difficult at first. During that review, a local 12-year-old skateboarder named Robin managed to ride with both feet up in under half an hour. That single trial is an anecdote, not a learning-time estimate for other riders.

The default speed limit is 15.5 MPH and can be adjusted by pressing the power button six times. The 36V 10.4Ah battery provides up to 15 miles of range, making this adult electric scooter a practical choice for daily commuting and short trips
- Smooth And Easy To Use: The 8.5-inch solid tires on this electric scooter for adults never need inflation, helping reduce the hassle of flat tires and regular maintenance. Simple assembly gets you ready to ride quickly, while the folding design makes this e scooter easy to store at home, in the office, or in your car
- Safety You Can Count On: The EABS front brake and rear disc brake provide responsive braking control, while the front and rear lights help improve visibility and safety in low-light conditions. Safety certified to UL 2272 by SGS, this electric scooter is designed for confident everyday riding
- Simple Controls, More Convenience: The power button does more than turn the escooter on and off. Press once to control the lights, twice to switch riding modes, three times to activate cruise control, four times to change speed units, five times to adjust zero-start, or six times to adjust the speed limit
- Built For Everyday Rides: With a sturdy design supporting riders up to 225 lbs, an easy-to-read LED display, and IP54 water resistance, this scooter is built for everyday transportation. IP54 protection helps against everyday splashes and light water exposure; avoid riding in rain or on wet, slippery surfaces
The review presents the ride as distinctive and attention-getting, but it does not establish that the Spirit is faster, easier to commute on or more durable than a skateboard or scooter. Robin described it as feeling “hardier” than a skateboard and thought it might suit commuting; that was one rider’s impression, not a tested durability or commuting result.
What are the stopping and rough-pavement concerns?
Braking depended on the model. The reviewed Stage 1+ had no brake. New Atlas said higher models could be equipped with a hydraulic disc brake operated by a lever in the handle. The reviewer argued that a brake should be standard and Robin suggested a skid plate for quick stops. These comments reflect the review’s concerns; they are not a substitute for a current specification or safety evaluation.

The reviewer also noticed the small front wheel could catch on sidewalk cracks. Because the large wheel sits between the rider’s calves, the reviewer found it harder to step off than from a skateboard or scooter and raised the possibility of tipping to one side when bailing out unexpectedly. The article does not report controlled safety testing, so these should be read as observed issues and concerns, not quantified risk findings.
Is the Gauswheel Spirit easy to carry?
New Atlas put the Spirit at more than 15 lb (6.8 kg) and described it as awkward to carry for long distances. In the reviewer’s account, an edge of the foot platform pressed into the carrier’s leg. The handle helps with carrying, but the review did not portray the Spirit as convenient for a long walk between rides.

How does it compare with a skateboard or scooter?
The review offers a hands-on impression of the Spirit, not a controlled comparison with competing products. Its observations point to trade-offs rather than a clear replacement for a familiar ride:

New Atlas’s Ben Coxworth published the hands-on review on October 20, 2015. It records the product’s layout, the reviewer’s ride impressions and a brief trial with one other rider. It does not establish current manufacturing or sales status, present-day prices, warranty or service terms, or availability of replacement parts. A buyer would need to verify those details for their region and the specific unit being considered.
