New Atlas’s January 15, 2019 gallery gathered 113 images and named its favorites, while contemporaneous coverage also showed how the event mixed speculative designs with vehicles and technologies closer to practical use.
What stood out at CES 2019
The exhibits ranged from familiar electric vehicles and automotive technology to concepts that reimagined how people and goods might move. “Best” here means New Atlas’s editorial picks from its 2019 gallery, not an award or an independent performance ranking. The concepts’ proposed capabilities were not demonstrations of production-ready service.
Land: walking wheels and a modular robotic platform
Hyundai Elevate: a vehicle designed to walk
New Atlas selected Hyundai Elevate as its favorite land-vehicle concept. Its motorized wheels were mounted on robotic legs, a configuration intended to help the vehicle traverse difficult terrain. The distinction between concept and exhibit matters: the gallery reported that Hyundai did not display a full-size Elevate or a scale prototype at CES.
AEV Mobility: one chassis, interchangeable roles
For a vehicle the reporter personally saw at the show, New Atlas instead favored AEV Mobility’s modular robotic vehicle concept. It paired a four-wheel-drive robotic skateboard chassis with interchangeable utility pods. Proposed applications included ride sharing, medical rescue, and industrial logistics; these were envisioned uses, not services shown operating at CES.

Sea: Furrion Adonis, a smart yacht
The gallery highlighted Furrion Adonis, which New Atlas described in 2019 as a 78-foot smart yacht. Its onboard assistant was reported to offer information and assistance through voice interaction or face recognition. These are descriptions of the yacht’s showcased technology as reported at the time, not independent verification of how the systems performed.
Air: Bell Nexus and the air-taxi idea
Bell presented Nexus as a full-size air-taxi concept with six tilting, hybrid-powered rotors designed for vertical takeoff and landing. The rotor count describes the concept’s configuration, not a measured performance result. New Atlas noted that passenger service was still years away when the concept appeared at CES 2019.

CES mobility also included nearer-term vehicles and demonstrations
The event was not solely a showcase for far-future concepts. BMW Group’s official January 2019 account named Vision iNEXT as its central exhibit and described an X7 off-road course and a self-riding R 1200 GS demonstration. Those demonstrations sat alongside more speculative mobility ideas, illustrating the range of what CES presented.
Cars.com’s January 11, 2019 roundup also covered the Mercedes-Benz EQC, BMW Vision iNext, Hyundai Elevate, Nissan Leaf Plus, Kia Niro EV Concept, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA, and the BMW/North Face Futurelight Camper concept. It discussed Ford Sync 3 integration with Waze as well as vehicles, underscoring that CES automotive coverage included technology and travel concepts, not just cars.

How to read the 2019 vehicle estimates
Some figures in contemporary coverage were estimates for vehicles or concepts, not verified present-day specifications. Cars.com reported an estimated range of 226 miles for the Nissan Leaf Plus and 238 miles for the Kia Niro EV Concept in January 2019. Those numbers belong to that period’s reporting and should not be treated as current ratings or proof that every announced plan came to pass.
