Amazon’s subsidiary has built a vehicle specifically for ride-hailing, and on July 30, 2026, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) granted it a temporary exemption that allows paid commercial deployment under conditions. Where you can actually book a ride still depends on local permits and service launch status.
What is Zoox?
Zoox is Amazon’s autonomous-vehicle subsidiary. Rather than adapting a standard passenger car, it is developing a purpose-built robotaxi designed around ride-hailing. Uber’s March 2026 announcement describes the vehicle as built specifically for that use; TechCrunch’s July 30, 2026 report says it has no steering wheel or pedals.

That design makes Zoox different from a normal car with a human driver, and from robotaxi approaches that retrofit conventional vehicles. It also means the vehicle is not simply a self-driving version of a car a rider already knows how to operate: passengers depend on its automated system for the entire trip.

The vehicle is designed to operate without a human driver at the wheel. The absence of a steering wheel and pedals is a physical feature, not proof that the service is available everywhere or that every trip runs without operational limits. Deployment is bounded by approvals, operating conditions and the areas in which Zoox is authorized to serve.

Zoox says its mapping and road-network work includes CLAMS and ZRN. Those are company-described components of its approach to understanding and operating on roads; their names do not independently certify performance or establish how the system handles every road or situation.
Can Zoox charge for rides now?
On July 30, 2026, NHTSA granted Zoox a temporary exemption permitting commercial deployment of up to 2,500 vehicles annually for two years. The exemption allows Zoox to charge for rides, but it is not a blanket authorization to operate in every state or city. TechCrunch reported that the exemption covers eight federal vehicle standards and that California still required driverless deployment permits from both the California Public Utilities Commission and the Department of Motor Vehicles.

NHTSA described the action as subject to enhanced oversight. The agency also announced $5 million over three years for the A2SCEND automated-vehicle standards consortium. That funding concerns standards work; it should not be read as a Zoox safety rating or as evidence that the vehicle outperforms human drivers.
Where can you ride Zoox?
As of October 3, 2026, Zoox’s website exposes city pages for Las Vegas, San Francisco, Austin and Miami, and its “Where to ride” navigation also lists Atlanta and Los Angeles. These listings indicate Zoox’s city presence or interest, not that unrestricted paid rides are available in each place. The city pages alone do not establish the precise service area, eligibility, hours or permit status.

Uber announced in March 2026 that it planned to make Zoox rides available through Uber in Las Vegas in summer 2026 and in Los Angeles by mid-2027. Since the stated Las Vegas target has passed, the announcement is not enough to confirm that launch occurred; check the current Uber and Zoox apps for actual local availability. The Los Angeles timing remains a future target as of October 3, 2026. Zoox has also described its own app as a booking channel.
Can you book Zoox through Uber?
Uber and Zoox announced a planned partnership in which Zoox rides would be bookable on Uber’s network, beginning in Las Vegas and later extending to Los Angeles. This is a distribution plan, not confirmation that a ride is currently bookable in either city. Availability in the app is the practical test: a city announcement or website listing does not guarantee that you can request a trip from your location.

For a rider, the useful distinction today is not which brand has the more futuristic vehicle; it is whether each service is permitted and bookable for the trip you need, and what independently comparable safety information is available. How safe is Zoox?
NHTSA’s exemption is regulatory permission to deploy under specified conditions, not a finding that Zoox is safer than a human driver or a certification that risk has been eliminated. NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison said, “NHTSA supports the safe development and deployment of automated vehicles.” The agency’s stated enhanced oversight and standards work are relevant safeguards, but they are not substitutes for comparative operating evidence.
No independent comparative crash-rate figure is established in the cited material. Zoox CEO Aicha Evans called Uber a partner that shares its vision for transforming mobility. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi described the vehicle as purpose-built for an “extraordinary experience.” Those statements express the companies’ ambitions; for riders, the verdict depends on whether the service is operating where they are, what the trip is like, and what evidence accumulates as deployment expands.
