Yes, aircraft that take off and land vertically are real, but “flying car” is usually shorthand: most are aircraft, not road-legal cars. The available evidence supports a status-checked look at three named designs and one early operational test—not a defensible list of 15 verified flying cars. None of the examples below should be mistaken for proof of routine passenger service or completed certification.

What counts as a flying car that takes off vertically?

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) groups many of these concepts under Advanced Air Mobility (AAM). Its examples are typically highly automated, electrically powered aircraft capable of vertical takeoff and landing. Powered-lift aircraft can maneuver at low speeds like helicopters, then use wings for airplane-like cruise. That describes a flight capability, not a road vehicle. The FAA’s AAM overview explains the category and its regulatory framework.

“eVTOL” means electric vertical takeoff and landing. The label does not, by itself, establish whether a vehicle has flown, passed certification, can carry paying passengers, or can be driven on streets. The examples below have different missions and different evidence behind them, so a prototype milestone should not be treated as proof of commercial readiness.

Which vertical-takeoff aircraft have meaningful milestones?

These are the named designs and programs for which the cited sources establish a specific status. The BETA entry is an operational test, not a separately identified aircraft model.

Design or program What the source establishes What it does not establish
LIFT Aircraft HEXA LIFT said in December 2025 that it had begun FAA type-certification work for a commercial edition; it also says it offers public pay-per-flight experiences. LIFT announcement Certification completion or current booking availability.
Vertical Aerospace Valo The company reported a piloted, two-way transition flight on April 14, 2026, under UK CAA oversight, and set a 2028 certification target. SEC-filed company release Achieved certification or a regulator-confirmed approval to carry passengers commercially.
SkyDrive SD-05 SkyDrive’s official site identifies SD-05 and describes proposed rooftop/open-space access and urban, tourism, and emergency/medical uses. SkyDrive official site A flight milestone, certification status, or service availability in that source.
BETA Technologies / eIPP test The FAA reported a July 14, 2026 organ-transport flight test from Virginia to Maryland involving BETA Technologies, United Therapeutics, and Pennsylvania DOT. FAA milestone announcement Routine passenger air-taxi service or a named consumer flying-car model.

LIFT Aircraft HEXA

HEXA is the closest example here to a public experience: LIFT says people can take pay-per-flight experiences without a pilot’s license. The company’s December 2025 announcement concerns starting FAA type-certification work on a commercial edition; it is not evidence that this edition has completed certification. The announcement also does not verify that bookings are currently available.

Vertical Aerospace Valo

Vertical Aerospace reported that its full-scale tiltrotor completed a piloted two-way transition flight on April 14, 2026, under UK Civil Aviation Authority oversight. The company’s stated 2028 certification goal is a target, not an achieved regulatory milestone. The flight is evidence of a company-reported test, not proof that Valo is certified or in passenger service.

SkyDrive SD-05

SkyDrive’s official site presents SD-05 as a vehicle intended for rooftop and open-space access, with proposed urban, tourism, and emergency or medical uses. Those are manufacturer descriptions of intended capability and use; the cited page does not establish certification, a completed flight milestone, or available transport service.

BETA Technologies’ organ-transport test

The FAA’s July 2026 report describes an eIPP pilot-program flight transporting organs from Virginia to Maryland with BETA Technologies, United Therapeutics, and Pennsylvania DOT. This demonstrates an early cargo and medical-logistics use case, not an established passenger-taxi network. The FAA’s administrator, Bryan Bedford, described eIPP as “a real-world environment to safely test and integrate the next generation of aircraft into our airspace system.” The FAA announcement identifies the event as a program milestone.

Does vertical takeoff mean these aircraft are ready to fly commercially?

No. A flight demonstration, a certification application, and permission to operate a commercial service are different milestones. In its 2026 report, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) said that, as of March 2026, no manned electric aircraft had received FAA type certification. The report also says the FAA evaluates electric aircraft and propulsion designs case by case while considering longer-term standardization. GAO’s report provides the date and scope of that finding; it should not be generalized to every aircraft worldwide or to later certification developments.

The FAA has a certification framework for powered-lift aircraft, alongside rules for pilots, instructors, and operations. Design-specific airworthiness criteria may apply. So even an aircraft that can lift off vertically still needs to meet the applicable safety requirements and operate under the relevant rules; vertical capability is not an exemption.

What is being tested in the United States?

In March 2026, the FAA announced eight selected eIPP proposals spanning 26 states. The program includes proposed passenger transport, cargo, emergency response, autonomous flight, and offshore or energy transportation use cases. The announcement said operations were expected to begin by summer 2026; that forecast alone does not establish that every selected operation began or that the aircraft involved were certified. The July organ-transport test is a specific reported milestone within this broader early-testing context. FAA’s eIPP announcement gives the selection count and planned scope.

What infrastructure do vertical-takeoff aircraft still need?

Taking off vertically can reduce dependence on a conventional runway, but it does not remove the need for suitable landing sites, charging, air-traffic coordination, maintenance, and trained operators. The FAA says initial AAM vehicles are expected to use existing infrastructure, such as helipads, routes, and air-traffic-control services, where possible. Actual operating needs will depend on the aircraft and mission.

GAO reported that, as of December 2025, 47 U.S. airports had identified electric-aircraft charging stations in their airport plans. That figure is about planned stations, not charging equipment confirmed as installed or operating. GAO also identifies installation cost, uncertain demand, and reliable electricity supply as challenges. GAO’s infrastructure findings describe those limits.

How to judge the next flying-car announcement

  • Identify the aircraft and mission: Check the exact model and whether it is intended for personal use, passenger service, cargo, or another role.
  • Check what actually happened: Distinguish a concept or announced test from a completed flight, and note whether a source is the manufacturer, a regulator, or an independent authority.
  • Separate flight from approval: Look for the certification authority, jurisdiction, and current certification stage. A company target is not a regulator’s approval.
  • Check the operating claim: “Flying car” does not prove road use. Confirm whether a source specifically establishes road legality, current service, or passenger-carrying permission.
  • Read performance numbers in context: Treat advertised range or speed as a design claim unless a current primary source reports it with the relevant conditions and configuration.
