Several announced SUVs could be worth waiting for, but the right choice depends on what you need: a non-plug-in hybrid, a luxury crossover, a three-row electric family vehicle, or a rugged body-on-frame SUV. The clearest North American prospects include the 2027 Nissan Rogue Hybrid and Lexus NX, Toyota’s upcoming electric Highlander, Volkswagen’s electric ID. Tiguan, a refreshed Toyota Sequoia, and Nissan’s planned Xterra return. Automakers’ launch windows are targets, not guarantees, and some of the range figures below are estimates or development targets rather than final EPA ratings.
What new SUVs are coming out in 2027?
This is a selected North America-focused roundup, not a complete global list. The announced timing and evidence vary: the Rogue Hybrid has a stated price and launch sequence; the Highlander BEV has development-target range figures and grade timing; the ID. Tiguan is still described as a near-production concept. The Xterra is further out, while the Sequoia is a refresh rather than an all-new model.

Which upcoming SUVs are hybrid?
2027 Nissan Rogue Hybrid: electric-motor drive without plugging in
Nissan’s e-POWER system uses a gasoline engine to generate electricity, while dual electric motors drive the wheels. The battery is not charged by plugging in. Nissan lists standard dual-motor AWD. Its announced launch sequence starts with an SR Technology Package configuration planned for fall 2026, followed by the full SV, SR, and Platinum range in early 2027.
Nissan lists a starting MSRP of $35,490 for the SV AWD, with destination and handling of $1,575 listed separately. The company’s 40 mpg city figure is an internal estimate; actual mileage may vary, and it should not be read as an EPA-certified rating. This setup may suit shoppers who want a hybrid without changing refueling habits, but Nissan’s announcement is not an independent driving or fuel-economy test.

2027 Lexus NX: conventional hybrid or plug-in hybrid
Lexus says the 2027 NX lineup will use hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. On select PHEV grades, Lexus estimates more than 40 miles of electric range; official EPA ratings are expected closer to the on-sale date. The estimate is not a verified EPA range, and final pricing has not been announced. A plug-in version is most relevant to buyers who can charge regularly; shoppers who do not want to rely on charging may prefer to compare the conventional hybrid once final specifications are available.
Should I wait for the electric Toyota Highlander?
Consider waiting if you need three rows and want a battery-electric SUV. Toyota has announced the Highlander BEV for North America, but the launch timing has changed in emphasis between announcements: Toyota’s global release expected sales in late 2026, while Toyota USA’s later release gives timing by 2028 model-year grade, with some expected in early 2027 and another in mid-2027. Treat those as plans, not a guaranteed delivery date.

Toyota describes battery capacities of 76.96 kWh and 95.82 kWh. Its development targets are 287 miles for the smaller-battery FWD configuration, 270 miles for the smaller-battery AWD configuration, and 320 miles for the larger-battery AWD configuration. These are not final EPA range ratings. Toyota also gives a development target of approximately 30 minutes for rapid charging under cold conditions when the battery is preconditioned. MSRP was not announced.
Before deciding, weigh the need for three rows against charging access and wait time. Final EPA range, pricing, charging details, and local availability will matter for comparisons with other three-row EVs.

What is Volkswagen’s electric ID. Tiguan?
Volkswagen plans to bring the all-electric ID. Tiguan to markets in early 2027 as the successor to the ID.4 and ID.5 role in its SUV range. Combustion and hybrid Tiguan models will continue alongside it, so the electric vehicle does not replace every Tiguan powertrain. Volkswagen calls the displayed vehicle a near-production concept; it is not yet for sale, and the announcement does not establish final market specifications or price. Check local naming and availability before treating the launch plan as relevant to your market.

Nissan has confirmed a U.S.-produced Xterra return targeted for late 2028 as part of a body-on-frame vehicle family. Nissan says that family will feature V6 or new V6 hybrid powertrains, but it has not confirmed which powertrain, if either, will be offered in the Xterra itself. The company is also exploring possible expansion into pickups and multi-row SUVs; those are possibilities, not confirmed Xterra products.

Design, price, trims, capability ratings, and detailed launch information have not been announced. The Xterra is therefore a watch-list choice for shoppers interested in a rugged SUV who can wait several years and accept substantial uncertainty—not a vehicle to compare on specifications today.
What is changing on the 2027 Toyota Sequoia?
The 2027 Sequoia is a refreshed full-size SUV, not an entirely new generation. Toyota announced updated styling, Toyota Safety Sense 4.0, a standard 14-inch multimedia display, and an available Trailhunter package. Based on SR5, Trailhunter adds Michelin LTX Trail tires, upgraded Old Man Emu suspension, front recovery hooks, and additional underbody protection.
