After a reported 5% technical tolerance, the speed retained for the case was 300 km/h—170 km/h over the limit. The driver’s licence was retained and the car was impounded, but those immediate measures are not a conviction or final sentence.
Where and when police stopped the Porsche
Haute-Savoie gendarmes reportedly stopped the Porsche overnight on September 26–27, 2026, on the A40 in the Arve Valley. The driver was described in reports as a 48-year-old Swiss man. The car was identified as a Porsche 911 GT3; the specific generation has not been firmly established in the incident reporting.

The Connexion reported the case as a French motorway speed record, citing the gendarmes. It is not an independently audited national record series. The same outlet reported an earlier high-speed case involving an Audi RS3 measured at 287 km/h on the A40 in May 2026. The Connexion’s report gives the incident details and chronology.
312 km/h detected, 300 km/h retained
Reports say the radar displayed 312 km/h (194 mph) against the 130 km/h (81 mph) limit. Applying the reported 5% technical tolerance produced a retained speed of 300 km/h, or 170 km/h above the limit. These figures describe two different stages of the measurement; the 312 km/h reading should not be substituted for the retained speed used in the reported case.

At the displayed speed, the car was travelling about 87 metres per second, according to The Connexion. Gendarme Captain Joël Contal was quoted by France 3, with the remark relayed by The Connexion: “In any case, the radar doesn’t lie.” That is his reported characterization, not a court finding on the equipment’s approval or the procedure.
What happened at the roadside—and what could happen in court
Immediate measures reported
Reports say the driver’s licence was taken or retained, the Porsche was seized or impounded, and the driver paid a €1,500 security deposit pending proceedings. The car’s reported impoundment is an immediate measure; it is distinct from permanent confiscation ordered as a possible final penalty.

Possible penalties, not a sentence
Coverage says the driver could face up to three months in prison and a fine of up to €3,750. A ban on driving in France and permanent confiscation of the car are also reported as possible consequences. These are potential penalties, not outcomes established by a judgment. The Connexion and Carscoops reported a court appearance expected in February 2027; as of October 11, 2026, the reviewed reports do not give a court decision.

An adrenaline rush? It makes no difference. The consequences are very real.” The same outlet relayed another statement: “Weekends come and go… and so does irresponsible behaviour.” These statements reflect the gendarmerie’s public response, not the court’s eventual ruling.

Could the radar’s approval limit affect the case?
Reports present competing views on whether the reading raises an equipment-approval issue. Caradisiac quoted road-law specialist Me Jean-François Changeur saying that most older radars are approved only up to 250 km/h and, to his knowledge, the newest systems only up to 300 km/h. He suggested the reading could be challenged. His comments describe his view of approval limits; they do not establish which device was used or how a court would rule.
Le Progrès reported the counter-position from an unnamed source close to the case: gendarmes used a latest-generation laser cinemometer approved up to 300 km/h, and the retained 300 km/h—not the displayed 312 km/h—was within that limit. The source argued the procedure would stand. That account is also not a court finding.

The reports reviewed do not include the device’s approval certificate, official technical documentation, court filings or a ruling. The approval question therefore remains contested in the available reporting. It does not establish that the case will be dismissed, nor that a prosecution is certain to succeed.
