The FIA recorded Yuki Tsunoda at 358.3 km/h (about 222.6 mph) in the race speed trap at the 2025 Las Vegas Grand Prix. Formula E’s Gen3 Evo is officially described as capable of 200 mph (about 322 km/h), while its GEN4 development car was reported above 335 km/h (about 208 mph) ahead of a planned 2026/27 racing debut. These are not results from a controlled head-to-head test: the F1 number is a race-event measurement, and the Formula E numbers are stated capabilities.
Formula E vs. Formula 1 top speeds at a glance
| Series and car | Figure | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Formula E Gen3 Evo, associated with the 2024/25 season | 200 mph (about 322 km/h) | FIA and Formula E stated top-speed capability for the car generation. FIA and Formula E, 25 April 2024 |
| Formula E GEN4 development car | Above 335 km/h (about 208 mph) | Reported development-car speed ahead of a planned 2026/27 season racing debut; not a completed season result. FIA and Formula E, 21 April 2026 |
| Formula 1, Las Vegas Grand Prix 2025 | 358.3 km/h (about 222.6 mph) | FIA race speed-trap reading for Yuki Tsunoda at that event. FIA event timing, 2025 |
By these cited figures, the Las Vegas F1 reading is higher than both Formula E figures: by about 36 km/h (22 mph) compared with the Gen3 Evo capability and by more than 23 km/h (14 mph) compared with the GEN4 development-car claim. The comparisons are arithmetic, not evidence of a shared test or of what each car would achieve on the same circuit.
What the Formula E figures mean
Gen3 Evo: stated capability of 200 mph
In April 2024, the FIA and Formula E described the Gen3 Evo as capable of 200 mph (about 322 km/h) and said it would debut in Season 11, the 2024/25 season. That is a published capability for the generation, rather than a speed-trap result from a named race.
GEN4: a development-car claim above 335 km/h
On 21 April 2026, the FIA and Formula E reported that their GEN4 development car had exceeded 335 km/h (about 208 mph). The same announcement gave a 0–200 km/h time of 4.4 seconds and said the car was due to race in the 2026/27 season. Treat the speed as a development-car figure, not a result from a completed championship season. The release also describes high-downforce and low-downforce aerodynamic configurations, a reminder that setup can affect maximum-speed claims.

The GEN4 announcement called the car a “significant step forward” in electric racing, but that is a general statement about the program, not a claim that GEN4 is faster than Formula 1.
What the Formula 1 figure means
The FIA’s Las Vegas 2025 timing document labels its figures “Race Maximum Speeds” and lists Tsunoda at 358.3 km/h in the speed trap. It establishes what was recorded for that driver at that event; it does not set a universal top speed for every F1 car, circuit or configuration, nor does it establish an all-time series record.

Event readings vary with circuit and measurement point. For example, the FIA’s 2025 Australian Grand Prix race-classification data lists a highest intermediate maximum of 331.8 km/h. That is a different event and timing point, so it should not be treated as a direct contradiction of the Las Vegas speed-trap result. FIA, 2025 Australian Grand Prix timing information
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this is not a like-for-like speed test
- Different kinds of figures: 358.3 km/h is an official race speed-trap reading; 200 mph and above 335 km/h are published Formula E capability or development figures.
- Different settings and conditions: circuit layout, car setup, aerodynamic configuration, weather and the location of the timing point all affect the speed a car reaches or records.
- Different generations and dates: the Gen3 Evo figure describes a generation associated with the 2024/25 season; the GEN4 figure concerns a development car before its planned 2026/27 debut; the F1 reading is from one 2025 race.
The FIA and Formula E described the earlier Gen3 as designed for street racing and wheel-to-wheel competition on high-speed street circuits, with a stated top speed above 322 km/h (200 mph). Their 2022 announcement also said more than 40% of race energy would be produced by regenerative braking. Those are series specifications and claims, not a comparable F1 measurement. No harmonized, published Formula E-versus-Formula 1 head-to-head speed statistic is established by these official figures. On the evidence available here, F1 has the higher cited number, but that verdict applies to this comparison—not to every car, track, configuration or historical record.
