Toyota lists it at a lower starting MSRP than the regular Highlander and gives it a higher maximum cargo capacity. That does not make it the right pick for everyone: both models offer three rows and up to eight seats, while the Highlander may suit shoppers who do not need the Grand Highlander’s extra capacity or performance option.
Which is bigger: Highlander or Grand Highlander?
The Grand Highlander has the higher maximum cargo figure in Toyota’s 2026 materials: up to 97.5 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, versus up to 84.3 cubic feet in the Highlander with its second and third rows folded. These are maximum folded-seat capacities, not measurements of luggage space with all three rows occupied. If you regularly carry passengers in the third row, check the space behind that row in the exact vehicle and configuration you plan to buy.
Toyota describes both SUVs as seating up to eight, depending on configuration. The Highlander’s optional second-row bench is available on certain grades, so confirm whether a particular vehicle has a bench or captain’s chairs before treating its seat count as settled. Toyota lists 28.0 inches of third-row legroom for the 2026 Highlander; the available figures here do not establish a matching Grand Highlander measurement, so they do not support a numeric legroom comparison.
How do their 2026 starting prices compare?
Toyota lists a U.S. starting MSRP of $42,260 for the 2026 Grand Highlander and $46,270 for the 2026 Highlander. Those are manufacturer starting prices, not guaranteed transaction prices; equipment, local inventory, regional offers, taxes, and dealer pricing can change what a shopper pays. Compare the actual trims and vehicles available near you rather than assuming the base-price gap applies to every configuration.

What powertrains and fuel-economy estimates does Toyota list?
The Grand Highlander offers three powertrain choices—gas, Hybrid, and Hybrid MAX—while the Highlander offers gas and hybrid. That broader range is a meaningful reason to consider the Grand Highlander if you want Toyota’s more performance-oriented Hybrid MAX option.

Toyota published these figures in 2025 for the 2026 models. The MPG numbers are manufacturer estimates, not observed real-world results, and actual fuel economy can vary with driving and conditions. Toyota’s figures distinguish the regular Grand Highlander Hybrid from Hybrid MAX: the 34-MPG estimate applies to the regular hybrid, while the 362-horsepower figure applies to Hybrid MAX.

What do Toyota’s safety-suite names tell you?
Toyota names Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 for the Grand Highlander and Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ for the Highlander. Those suite names alone do not establish which vehicle is safer, and the available information does not provide a basis for declaring an independent safety winner. Check the equipment on the specific grade you are considering and consult current recall and crash-test information separately.
When is the Grand Highlander the better fit?
- You want the larger published maximum cargo capacity, especially for trips when you can fold rear seats.
- You want to choose among gas, a regular hybrid, and Hybrid MAX.
- You are shopping by starting MSRP and want to compare Toyota’s lower listed entry price against the vehicles and equipment actually available locally.
Toyota describes the Grand Highlander with the marketing line “More room for the things you love.” The published cargo maximum supports the general space-focused positioning, but it does not answer the practical question of how much luggage fits behind an occupied third row. Bring your regular passengers and cargo needs into the comparison.

When does the regular Highlander still make sense?
The Highlander remains a three-row option with up to eight seats, gas and hybrid powertrains, and Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+. It may be the more sensible choice if you do not need the Grand Highlander’s higher maximum cargo capacity or Hybrid MAX. The official figures cited here do not establish a third-row comfort winner, so shoppers concerned about passenger fit should sit in both models rather than infer comfort from their names or maximum cargo volumes.

- Count how often you use the third row. If it is occupied often, test access and passenger fit in the specific grade and seating layout; maximum folded-seat cargo figures will not tell you the room left when all rows are up.
- Bring the cargo you actually carry. Try strollers, sports gear, or luggage behind the third row, and then see how much space remains when the row is in use.
- Pick the powertrain you want. The Grand Highlander is the only one of these two with Toyota’s listed Hybrid MAX choice; both have gas and hybrid options.
- Compare local configurations and prices. Use the published starting MSRPs as a starting point, then compare equivalent grades, seating layouts, and dealer inventory.
Toyota’s official model materials support the Grand Highlander’s case on starting MSRP, maximum cargo capacity, and powertrain breadth. They do not settle real-world fuel economy, independent safety rankings, or which third row is more comfortable. Those are separate questions to verify for your priorities and the exact vehicles you are considering.
