Ford’s “Model T moment” event took place on August 11, 2025. It unveiled a new electric-vehicle platform and production system—not a truck that customers could buy that day. Ford has since named the first planned vehicle the Fathom, a midsize electric pickup. The company now lists a $28,350 starting MSRP for its standard-range version and says preorders are planned for early 2027; those are announced targets, not a final out-the-door price or a confirmed delivery date.
What Ford announced on August 11, 2025
Ford introduced the Universal EV Platform as the foundation for a family of electric vehicles, with potential applications that include trucks, cars, and other body styles. Its first announced vehicle was a midsize, four-door electric pickup to be assembled at Louisville Assembly Plant. Ford initially targeted a starting MSRP of about $30,000 and said the truck would reach customers in 2027. Ford’s August 11, 2025 announcement described the plan.
Ford said the planned vehicles would use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries assembled in the United States at BlueOval Battery Park Michigan. The event’s central claim was not simply that Ford would make a less expensive EV: the company presented the platform and a different factory workflow as a way to develop and build a family of vehicles.
Why Ford called it a “Model T moment”
Ford president and CEO Jim Farley called the initiative “a Model T moment.” The comparison was Ford’s framing of a manufacturing and accessibility ambition: make electric vehicles that more people can afford by changing both vehicle architecture and how vehicles are assembled. It was not a claim that the new truck had already proved its price, production efficiency, or market impact.

The distinction matters. The August 2025 event announced a plan and investments; it did not launch a retail vehicle. Doug Field, Ford’s chief EV, digital and design officer, argued that delivering new ideas at scale—not merely having them—would be the challenge. That remains an aspiration until production vehicles and their real-world pricing and specifications are established.
The first vehicle is now called the Ford Fathom
Ford subsequently named the first Universal EV Platform vehicle the Ford Fathom. It remains described as a midsize electric pickup. Ford’s current product page lists a starting MSRP of $28,350 for the standard-range truck and says preorders are planned for early 2027.

That listed figure is newer and more specific than the roughly $30,000 target Ford announced in 2025. They are separate company statements at different points in the program, not two prices to combine or average. Neither figure establishes the final transaction price, taxes and fees, destination charges, available configurations, or what customers will pay for a delivered truck.

What is known about the factory schedule
Ford’s later Louisville Assembly Plant update says retooling remains on track. Ford targets the start of production-qualified prototype builds in the first quarter of 2027 and continues to plan a 2027 rollout. Those milestones do not establish when customer deliveries will begin.

Ford has not established final production specifications in these cited updates. They do not provide an EPA range, battery capacity, charging time, final trim equipment, or a consumer delivery date. Until those details are announced, a meaningful comparison with another pickup or affordable EV is limited to the Fathom’s planned body style, announced price, and intended timing.
How Ford says its new production system will work
Ford calls its manufacturing approach the Universal EV Production System. In the company’s description, the front and rear sections of a vehicle are assembled on separate branches. A third branch prepares the structural battery together with the seats, consoles, and carpeting. The branches meet near the end of assembly.

Ford says this layout is intended to simplify assembly and improve worker ergonomics. It is a description of the planned process and its goals, not independent evidence that the system has already delivered faster production, lower costs, or better working conditions at scale. Ford vice president of Americas manufacturing Bryce Currie described the Louisville work as the start of the facility’s next manufacturing chapter.

In its 2025 announcement, Ford reported approximately $5 billion in investment for the platform and production effort: about $2 billion to transform Louisville Assembly Plant and $3 billion committed to BlueOval Battery Park Michigan. The company said the Louisville investment would secure 2,200 jobs and that the battery facility commitment was associated with 1,700 jobs. These are Ford-reported investment and employment figures, not independently verified totals.

What a prospective buyer can—and cannot—conclude
The Fathom is a named future vehicle with an announced starting MSRP and a stated preorder target, but it is not yet a vehicle with final specifications or established customer delivery timing. Ford’s most recent cited factory update keeps the program on a 2027 schedule, while production-qualified prototype builds are still a future milestone.
