Ford’s August 2025 shift toward smaller, more affordable EVs was only the first version of its plan. In December, the company said its first North American Universal EV Platform vehicle would be a midsize electric pickup, targeted to begin production in 2027. Ford also changed course on the F-150 Lightning and commercial vans: the next Lightning is planned as an extended-range EV, while the previously announced new electric commercial van was dropped from plans for both North America and Europe. Ford’s May 2026 European announcements describe a separate rollout.
What changed in Ford’s EV strategy?
The August 8, 2025 report from Ars Technica described Ford prioritizing smaller, less expensive EVs before replacements for the full-size F-150 Lightning and E-Transit. At the time, the story said Ford expected the T3 full-size electric pickup later in 2027, with the van a year behind.
Ford’s December 15, 2025 announcement set out a different roadmap. For North America, its pure-EV development would center on the Universal EV Platform, beginning with a midsize pickup. The update also specified an extended-range powertrain for the next-generation F-150 Lightning and replaced the previously announced North American electric commercial van with a gas- and hybrid-powered van. The original timing for the T3 and the electric van should therefore be treated as historical, not as the current plan.
Ford framed the shift as a response to customer demand and its business priorities. CEO Jim Farley called it “a customer-driven shift to create a stronger, more resilient and more profitable Ford.” The company said it was reallocating capital toward Ford Pro, trucks and vans, hybrids, affordable EVs and battery energy storage. These are Ford’s stated rationale and priorities, not an independent assessment of whether the strategy will succeed.

What North American EVs and vans does Ford now plan?
| Vehicle or program | Ford’s announced plan | Timing or certainty |
|---|---|---|
| Universal EV Platform midsize pickup | First vehicle on the platform; a pure EV. | Ford said production is planned to start in 2027. This is a target, not a confirmed on-sale date. |
| Next-generation F-150 Lightning | Extended-range EV architecture, rather than the previously expected fully battery-electric replacement. | Ford’s December 2025 announcement did not give a launch date or final specifications. |
| North American commercial van | New affordable gas- and hybrid-powered van, replacing the announced electric-van plan. | Ford’s December 2025 announcement did not establish a launch date or price. |
Ford’s December 2025 announcement also set a global electrification ambition: the company expected hybrids, extended-range EVs and fully electric vehicles together to account for about 50% of its global volume by 2030, compared with 17% in 2025. This is Ford’s projection, not a reported outcome.
Is Ford still making an electric F-150?
Ford has not described the next-generation F-150 Lightning as a conventional, fully battery-electric replacement. Its December 2025 plan calls for extended-range EV architecture. That distinction matters: the announced direction is not the same as the North American platform pickup, which Ford describes as a pure EV. Ford has not yet published final powertrain details or specifications for the next Lightning in the cited announcements.

What is known about the smaller electric pickup?
Ford’s 2026 platform Q&A said the first Universal EV Platform truck would have a footprint comparable to the Maverick, but would not look like a Maverick. Ford described the platform as designed to support a family of smaller, efficient and affordable electric vehicles in different sizes and body styles.
The Q&A cited around 300 miles as a range expectation for some customers. That is a Ford goal, not a final published range specification for the pickup. Ford has not confirmed an SUV on the platform or provided a timeline for one. The production-start target Ford announced for the pickup remains 2027; that does not establish when customer deliveries will begin.

What happened to Ford’s electric van plans?
Ford’s December 2025 announcement changed the van plan by region. In North America, the company said it would develop a new affordable commercial van powered by gas and hybrid systems instead of the previously announced electric van. In Europe, Ford said it no longer planned the previously announced new electric commercial van, while its existing electrified van lineup would continue.
That is not an announcement that Ford is ending all electric vans. Ford’s 2025 fact sheet says 1.5 million Transit vans had been assembled in the United States since 2014 and that, according to Ford, 98% of Transits sold in the prior 10 years were still on the road. Those figures describe Ford’s U.S. Transit business; they do not establish demand for a future electric van.

How does the European EV roadmap differ?
Ford’s May 18, 2026 European roadmap separately names an electric hatch, a small electric SUV and the all-electric Transit City van. These are Europe-specific plans and should not be confused with the North American Universal EV Platform pickup or the North American gas- and hybrid-powered commercial van.
For a current-model reference—not a forecast or price for a replacement—Ford’s 2025 U.S. fact sheet lists a starting MSRP of $53,260 for the 2026 E-Transit Cargo Van, before the listed destination and delivery charge. That figure applies to the U.S. model and does not price the planned Transit City or any future van.
