Ford’s aluminum supply disruption began with two fires at Novelis’s Oswego, New York, plant in 2025. It affected production of Ford’s F-Series trucks, but the key mill restarted in June 2026. Ford later said a separate F-150 supplier issue in September 2026 was not related to aluminum.
How the Novelis fires disrupted Ford’s aluminum supply
Novelis supplies aluminum used in vehicle production, including material important to Ford’s F-Series trucks. A fire at its Oswego, New York, facility in September 2025 interrupted supply. The episode was a supplier interruption, not evidence that Ford had run out of aluminum altogether. Its importance came from the effect a constrained supply of a key material could have on production of high-volume trucks.
What the disruption meant for F-Series production
In 2025, Ford estimated that as many as 100,000 F-Series trucks could be lost through the end of that year and that the disruption could cost as much as $2 billion. Those figures describe the scale Ford feared during the disruption. They do not establish how many trucks ultimately went unbuilt, how much production was later recovered, or how much of that recovery came specifically from Oswego aluminum.

That number was a forward-looking plan, not a confirmed final production result. The available figures do not show whether Ford met the target or how many of those additional trucks were enabled by the Oswego restart.
Novelis restarted its Oswego hot mill in June 2026
On June 10, 2026, Novelis announced that the affected Oswego hot mill was back online and that it was working with customers to ramp up supply. A restart and a supply ramp-up are not proof that all lost output, inventory, or production had already been recovered. Novelis’s announcement established that the mill was operating again, not the extent of Ford’s subsequent recovery.

In an October 2026 sales update, Ford said a short-term F-150 supplier issue at the end of September was unrelated to aluminum. Ford said the expected financial impact could be contained within its existing full-year adjusted EBIT guidance. Ford’s October 2026 sales update
